An evaluation of the genotoxicity of domestic sewage was carried out in a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The study was carried out using Allium cepa root tip cells through cytological parameters such as aberrant cells in anaphase-telophase and the mitotic index, and the fish species Oreochromis niloticus and Tilapia rendalli, through the index of micronuclei in peripheral erythrocytes. In the Allium test, each of the four stages of the wasterwater treatment routine was analyzed, i.e., crude sewage, primary effluent, secondary effluent, and tertiary effluent. Resumo: A pesquisa teve como base o trabalho de campo desenvolvido nas dependências do Viveiro de Plantas Municipal de Jacareí, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Foi projetado um sistema constituído por fossa séptica e leito cultivado, com objetivo de solucionar os problemas dos esgotos gerados pelas comunidades rurais e das periferias de áreas urbanas. O sistema foi dimensionado para fazer o tratamento de esgotos gerado por 40 pessoas, funcionários e visitantes. O projeto é constituído de duas unidades, fossa séptica e leito cultivado. Abstract The aim of this work is to evaluate the performance of upflow anaerobic fixed bed reactors filled with espresso coffee capsules to treat sanitary sewage. Three reactors (R1, R2 and R3) were constructed in blue PVC pipes measuring 30 cm height and 150 mm diameter and filled with coffee capsules made of aluminum and plastic. The sewage from the pre-treatment phase of the wastewater treatment plant of the Federal University of Lavras fed the system.
