Embolism formation during freezing in the wood of Picea abies Inra

Freeze-thaw events can cause embolism in plant xylem. According to classical theory, gas bubbles are formed during freezing and expand during thawing. Conifers have proved to be very resistant to freeze-thaw induced embolism, because bubbles in tracheids are small and redissolve during thawing. In contrast, increasing embolism rates upon consecutive freeze-thaw events were observed that cannot be explained by the classical mechanism. In this study, embolism formation during freeze-thaw events was analyzed via ultrasonic and Cryo-scanning electron microscope techniques. Twigs of Picea abies L. Vulnerability to embolism differs in roots and shoots and among three Mediterranean conifers: consequences for stomatal regulation of water loss ? Inra

We investigated the potential links between stomatal control of transpiration and the risk of embolism in root and shoot xylem of seedlings of three Mediterranean conifers (Cupressus sempervirens, Pinus halepensis and P. nigra) grown in a greenhouse under semi-controlled conditions. We measured the intrinsic vulnerability to embolism in roots and current year shoots by the air injection method. Root and shoot segments were subjected to increasing pressures, and the induced loss of hydraulic conductivity recorded. The three species displayed very different vulnerabilities in shoots, with P. nigra being much more vulnerable than P. halepensis and C. sempervirens. Les variations de conductances hydrauliques totales induites par une sécheresse ont été suivies tout au long d’une saison de végétation dans une parcelle de Picea abies âgés de 30 ans. gL a été calculé à partir de mesures simultanées de potentiels hydriques foliaires et de densités de flux de sève dans les troncs. Le déficit hydrique dans le sol a réduit nettement gL, cette réduction étant probablement localisée dans le compartiment sol-racine. La chute de gL n’a pas induit de diminution importante du potentiel hydrique minimum parce que les densités de flux de sève maximales ont été réduites proportionnellement à gL. Nous faisons l’hypothèse que les valeurs maximales journalières de flux de sève chez l’épicéa sont ajustées en fonction de la conductance...
