A colony of honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) deprived of its hive and combs behaves like a reproductive swarm and will cluster on any convenient support. When the queen is taken away from such an artificial swarm, the workers soon become restless and increasing numbers fly off until eventually the cluster breaks up altogether.

Effect of skin contact on the free and bound aroma compounds of the white wine of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Narince Inra

Free and glycosidically bound aroma compounds of the Narince wines and the effect of skin contact treatment (15 degrees C, 12h) on aroma composition have been investigated during two vintages. Free and bound aroma compounds were extracted with dichloromethane and Amberlite XAD-2 resin, respectively, and then analysed by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). According to the results obtained in both vintages, Narince wines were characterized by the presence of high level of fermentative aroma compounds (higher alcohols, fatty acids, and esters, respectively), and skin contact treatment increased the total concentration of free and bound volatiles.

S'il est admis que l'ajout d'agent texturant à la matrice alimentaire entraîne très souvent une diminution de la perception de l'arôme, les mécanismes des interactions texture / arôme restent peu connus ou controversés. Esters are important contributors to cheese flavor, but their mechanisms of synthesis in cheese are largely unknown. This study aimed to determine whether ethanol concentration limits the formation of ethyl esters in cheese. Mini Swiss cheeses were manufactured with (E) or without (C) the addition of ethanol to cheese milk. Ethanol concentrations (enzymatic analysis) were 64 ± 17 and 330 ± 82 g g-1, respectively, in C and E cheeses. E cheeses also contained 5.4 ± 2.3 times more of the five ethyl esters quantified than C cheeses, regardless of the concentrations of esters in C cheeses (range 1-128 ng g-1). Identification of iso-amyl acetate as an active component in the sting pheromone of the honey bee National Institute of Agronomic Research

The sting of the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) carries volatile substances which incite bees to aggression. This was first demonstrated by Huber, who elicited attacks by the guard bees when he placed freshly excised stings or the odour of stings near the hive entrance. Free found that cotton balls containing stings were more frequently stung than control balls.

Residual fumagillin activity in sugar syrup stored by wintering honeybee colonies National Institute of Agronomic Research

Experiments are described which show that the level of Nosema infection was satisfactorily reduced by feeling colonies in October with Fumidil B (but not with Nosemack). Other experiments show that syrup containing fumagillin, fed to colonies in the fall and overwintered in the colony, was effective the following summer in reducing the level of Nosema infection in caged bees.
