Launched ten years ago, the biennial publication of the French Maritime Economical Data (DEMF) analyses French maritime activities in their diversity. It assesses their economical importance based on a number of indicators updated on a regular basis. This synthesis of the DEMF 2007 draws the main aspects of the French maritime activities in the form of sectorial index cards providing production, employment and budget data over recent years. The "merchant" sector includes the exploitation of marine resources, the manufacturing and services. The public sector includes Navy, public action, education, coastal environment protection and marine research. |

The "French Maritime Economic Data" report is periodically published by Ifremer since 1997. It presents an economic assessment of the French maritime activities, their position in the national economy and in the world competition, as well as the significance of non market public services. Maritime activities in the industrial sector are assessed using a standard metrics to facilitate the periodical update of the report: turnover, gross value added, employment, number of enterprises, exports. These indicators are expressed at national level. The public sector is described by annual budgets, number of staff and personnel costs, broken down into the different public policy functions. Regional indicators are provided on activities whenever relevant and... |

This presentation of the economic aspects of the Mediterranean shellfish culture is based on the first intermediary report and on different country reports (France, Spain, Italy) from EU's FAR program n°2-456 about "the analysis of the costs and prices for an economic study of shellfish culture management in Europe". The aim of the first part of this study is to identify the production and marketing techniques of the main EEC countries, analyse international trade between them and consider the development perspectives of these productions and trade. |

Introduction : Intra-basin fishing is not grasped as well, partly because of a lack of distinction between pure professional fishing units and conchological units and on the other hand because of the large amount of ships. Poorly adapted codification of the equipment found in the basin is also contributing to this lack of information. Studies on the subject do exist, but the elements necessary to publish notices are not always gathered, this is leading to the proposal of a geographical systemic analysis on the basin. The steps that are being taken are complementing the development of the Geographical Information System already in place in the basin since 1993 through DEL at the Arcachon Ifremer as well as the PECOSUDE European study ¿ caractéristiques des... |

This study recounts the policies on fishing fleet renewal in France from 1945 to 1983. The views held by sector professionals and the public authorities on the role of fleet renewal in fisheries economy are put into context in terms of stock abundance, access to fishing grounds, the state of the market, etc. The consequences of the lack of consistent guidelines for distributing the resources between competing fleets, foreign or national, are presented. The limits of the stances held on technical "progress" and "reasonable" management of resources are discussed. Other, complementary lines of research to undertake are proposed as a conclusion. Many tables and figures illustrate the text. |

Introduction: To develop its 2005-2009 strategic plan, IFREMER made two prospective analysis studies in 2003: a thematic prospective analysis and a sectorial prospective analysis. The "aquafarming" sectorial prospective analysis, based primarily on an IFREMER idea, particularly brought to light the difference in nature of problems posed by the future evolution of shellfish farming, fish farming and other stockbreeding (pearl farming and shrimp farming). In addition, the prospective analyses made on an international scale by the FAO (2002, 2004) and the IFPRI (2003) emphasise that the development of aqua farming is the required condition for satisfying world demand of consumer aquatic products, given the foreseeable weak growth, indeed, the stagnation of... |

Defining the economic and social importance of shellfish culture and evaluating its expansion potential through the identification and classification of the major constraints and the research and development orientations that could lead to this expansion. Reports show that the economic importance of shellfish culture varies from one country to the other. These differences come from the variations in the amounts produced but also from the evaluation methods used. One of the controversial points deals with the production charts which often include, without distinction, fished and farmed shellfishes. Shellfish culture is fundamentally an extensive exploitation mode, similar to extensive terrestrial farms. However, interventionism varies from one country to... |

A brief survey of the sea-food markets for the northern Mediterranean countries is presented, i.e. for Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. Then a comparative study between the markets belonging to the European Union is completed. Three of these countries (France, Italy and Spain) are characterised by a huge deficit in their external sea-products trade. Greece is almost balanced, but Portugal has been importing increasingly more over the last few years. About 45% of the imports come from the European Union. After many years of increasing value, we can now see a stabilisation in the fish price. Since 1977, the consumption of fresh products has been receding in favour of frozen and processed products. Cultured salmon and shrimp which... |

Bivalve farming is in France a major economical activity, which development was initiated in the mid of last century. It occupies nowadays 24 000 ha of seabottom, leased from the French State, and production figures are above 100 000 tonnes for cupped oyster and 40 000 tonnes for mussel ; these made a gross value of 1 300 millions francs in 1983. Moreover, it shows potential for promising development, by expanding to new areas, especialy in deep sea, or by introducing new species, such as the short neck clam, which production has just reached significant level (300 T in 1984). Long age and success of this cultivation activity come from the important advantages related to the biology and ecology of bivalves: food naturaly available, and of no use by another... |
