Contamination des milieux aquatiques par les substances pharmaceutiques et cosmétiques - Etat des lieux et perspectives ArchiMer
Collette-bregand, Maude; James, Alice; Munshy, Catherine; Bocquene, Gilles.
This document reports a survey of the aquatic contamination by cosmetics and medicinal products for human and veterinary uses. The contamination of the continental, estuary and coastal waters by these substances gives rise to questions on environmental risk assessment and management. Among the pharmaceutical classes involved, substances such as anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid hormones, antibiotics and hypolipemiants are of particular concern. Present regulations do not take into account the medical effluents in the environment. A significant part of these substances is not destroyed in water treatment plants whereas veterinary substances are directly spread in the environment. Some molecules occur in particularly high concentrations as shown for...

Does coastal lagoon habitat quality affect fish growth rate and their recruitment? Insights from fishing and acoustic surveys ArchiMer
Brehmer, Patrice; Laugier, Thierry; Kantoussan, J.; Galgani, Francois; Mouillot, D..
Ensuring the sustainability of fish resources necessitates understanding their interaction with coastal habitats, which is becoming ever more challenging in the context of ever increasing anthropogenic pressures. The ability of coastal lagoons, exposed to major sources of disturbance, to provide resources and suitable habitats for growth and survival of juvenile fish is especially important. We analysed three lagoons with different ecological statuses and habitat quality on the basis of their eutrophication and ecotoxicity (Trix test) levels. Fish abundances were sampled using fishing and horizontal beaming acoustic surveys with the same protocols in the same year. The relative abundance of Anguilla anguilla, Dicentrarchus labrax or the Mugilidae group was...

Ecological risk assessment of Piper aduncum essential oil in non-target organisms Acta Amazonica
MIURA,Patrícia Tidori; JONSSON,Claudio Martín; QUEIROZ,Sonia Claudia do Nascimento de; CHAGAS,Edsandra Campos; CHAVES,Francisco Célio Maia; REYES,Felix Guillermo Reyes.
ABSTRACT One possible alternative to chemotherapeutic agents in the treatment and prevention of diseases in fish farms is the use of Piper aduncum essential oil. However, ecotoxicological data are required to ensure its proper use and to prevent adverse effects on non-target organisms. These data are relevant since this essential oil is described as having insecticidal, molluscicidal and cytotoxic activitiy that may be associated with its chemical composition. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the ecotoxicity of P. aduncum essential oil to five test organisms using the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) statistical approach. The chemical composition of the essential oil was characterized by means of gas chromatography coupled to mass...

Efficient, fast and inexpensive bioassay to monitor benthic microalgae toxicity: Application to Ostreopsis species ArchiMer
Pavaux, Anne-sophie; Ternon, Eva; Dufour, Louison; Marro, Sophie; Gémin, Marin-pierre; Thomas, Olivier P.; Lemée, Rodolphe.
Even though HPLC-MS is commonly used to quantify the toxin content of Ostreopsis spp. cells, there is a need to develop easy-to-use toxicological tests to set thresholds during Ostreopsis spp. blooms. The crustacean Artemia has been widely used to evaluate the presence and toxicity of chemicals and biological contaminants and we anticipated that it could also be useful to test Ostreopsis spp. toxicity. Its relevance was first assessed by investigating the variability of the toxic effects among Ostreopsis spp. strains and throughout the dinoflagellate life cycle in combination with chemical analyses of the toxinic content by UHPLC-HRMS. After testing the toxicity of fractions prepared from Ostreopsis spp. cells, the known ova- and paly-toxins were not the...

Structural and functional responses of coastal marine phytoplankton communities to PAH mixtures ArchiMer
Ben Othman, Hiba; Lanouguere, Elodie; Got, Patrice; Hlaili, Asma Sakka; Leboulanger, Christophe.
The toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) mixtures was evaluated on natural phytoplankton communities sampled from lagoons of Bizerte (South-western Mediterranean Sea) and Thau (North-western Mediterranean Sea). PAHs induced short-term dose and ecosystem-dependant decreases in photosynthetic potential. Chlorophyll a was negatively affected by increasing PAHs concentrations, together with dramatic changes in phytoplankton community composition. Size classes were strongly affected in the Bizerte compare to the Thau lagoon, with a decrease in nano- and microphytoplankton densities compare to picophytoplankton. In both locations, the diatom Entomoneis paludosa appeared favoured under PAH exposure as evidenced by increase in cell density, whereas...
