Abstract Empirical models can be used to represent the recrystallization process in frozen food as a simple strategy (limited by the complexity of the process). Anyway, the empirical model has a better fit when used within the range of experimental values from which they were generated. In this work, an empirical mathematical model derived from the Arrhenius equation was proposed, since in previous publications it was shown that there is a direct relation between the growth of ice crystals and the temperature oscillations that occur during the storage of frozen products. Equivalent diameter data of ice crystals obtained from the storage of frozen Tilapia analyzed in the optical microscope was used as a database for the formulation of the empirical model....

The objective of this work was to analyze future scenarios for palisade grass yield subjected to climate change for the state of São Paulo, Brazil. An empirical crop model was used to estimate yields, according to growing degree-days adjusted by one drought attenuation factor. Climate data from 1963 to 2009 of 23 meteorological stations were used for current climate conditions. Downscaled outputs of two general circulation models were used to project future climate for the 2013-2040 and 2043-2070 periods, considering two contrasting scenarios of temperature and atmospheric CO2 concentration increase (high and low). Sea Surface Ka-Band Doppler Measurements: Analysis and Model Development ArchiMer

Multi-year field measurements of sea surface Ka-band dual-co-polarized (vertical transmit–receive polarization (VV) and horizontal transmit–receive polarization (HH)) radar Doppler characteristics from an oceanographic platform in the Black Sea are presented. The Doppler centroid (DC) estimated using the first moment of 5 min averaged spectrum, corrected for measured sea surface current, ranges between 0 and ≈1 m/s for incidence angles increasing from 0 to 70∘ . Besides the known wind-to-radar azimuth dependence, the DC can also depend on wind-to-dominant wave direction. Abstract: The intense growth of fish farming in Brazil requires an operational monitoring of water quality. Water transparency is an important parameter to investigate the biological balance in productive waters. Empirical algorithms based on remotely sensed data can be used to monitoring the spatial and temporal variability in such productive system. This work aimed to map the water transparency in caged-fish farm from space and to evaluate the short-term impact of this activity on eutrophication. The results showed that the empirical algorithm (band ratio 443/665 nm) was satisfactory for study area (MAPE = 17.5%) and the water transparency was an indicator of algal presence in fish farms.

This paper proposes an empirical model for the recruitment of the scallop stock, Pecten maximus (L.), in Saint-Brieuc Bay (English Channel, France). This stock shows important fluctuations in recruitment. The use of traditional models for fish population dynamics based upon an equilibrium state were inadéquate. This model includes three independent variables: spawning biomass, effects of fishing effort on the unexploited year classes, and temperature. Correlations between these expressions of independent parameters and recruitment are systematically analysed.
