Population of 4000 soles received from an induced spawing (COB-BREST), with a mean weight o£ 54 mg were introduced into a man modified lagoon (1000 m2 ) at Certes (4 soles/m2 ). The experiment was continued until December 1977 and permitted an analysis of the demographic evolution of the population : structure number, biomass, growth, production. Simultaneously an estimate of the trophic support necessary for the population derived by correlating oxydative demands with rate of oxygen consumption, was determined experimentally with specimens obtained during the samplings for growth and production (19 VII, 14 IX, 24 XI, 20 XII 1977). 1°) The demographic evolution of the population shows a rapid growth and a strong spread in size. For the short duration of... |

Mathematical models for biological processes are presented as a set of tools for research, which ilave been created for specifie tasks impact studies, energy budget, test of hypothesis. Before using it, the mecanisms involved must be analysed, depending upon wether a whole ecosystem or one animal is studied (biological scale), physical conditions are taken into account (physical scale), with a predetermined scale for time. The no general method for analysis can be, as conditions of studies are so different, but sorne typical cases can show the approach of the modelizer and the recent developments of its tools. |

The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is a major cultivated shellfish resource in France, which represented a tumover of 220 millions € in 2000. Mass mortalities among this commercially important bivalve species are known in France since about 40 years, but have become a recun'ing obstacle for growers of oysters and a threaten for commercial production along the French Atlantic coast in the last 20 years. Since 2000, IFREMER is canying out a multidisciplinary program, MOREST, ta understand the problem of summer mortality, and possibly ta solve il. As part of the MOREST program, the present study focuses on the relationship between gametogenesis, metabo lism and mortality of 7-month, i.e. juvenil e, C. gigas. In April 2004, a total of 2250 oysters were... |

There has been growing interest in the development of mud crab aquaculture in New Caledonia. However, for this to become established at a commercial level, a cost-effective formulated feed based on internationally-available ingredients needs to be developed. We have evaluated the optimal dietary protein content for juvenile crabs, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), using a series of diets with a protein content ranging from 27 to 49% and soy protein concentrate (SPC) as the main protein source. For this purpose, 54 individually housed crabs were allocated to five dietary treatments (n = 10 or 11). The crabs were fed ad libitum, for 81 days with the allocated diets. The apparent digestibilities of dry mater, crude protein and energy were high (96.2-97.3%),... |

An ocean mixed layer heat budget methodology is used to investigate the physical processes determining subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) sea surface temperature (SST) and ocean heat content (OHC) variability on decadal-multidecadal timescales using the state-of-the-art climate model HadGEM3-GC2. New elements include development of an equation for evolution of anomalous SST for interannual and longer timescales in a form analogous to that for OHC, parameterization of the diffusive heat flux at the base of the mixed layer and analysis of a composite AMOC event. Contributions to OHC and SST variability from two sources are evaluated i) net ocean-atmosphere heat flux and ii) all other processes, including advection, diffusion and entrainment for SST. Anomalies in... |

Variations in dry weight, caloric content and ash content during cyst hatching and early larval development have been studied for various geographical strains of Artemia . In general, decapsulated cysts contain 30 to 40% more energy than freshly hatched nauplii; for Chaplin Lake and Buenos Aires Artemia this difference amounts to 57%. Ash contents increase as decapsulated cysts hatch into instar I and molt into instar II-III nauplii. Over a 24h larval developmental period individual dry weights and energy content of the nauplii decrease with 16-34% and 22-37% respectively.A small but significant correlation exists between the survival rate of starved nauplii and either the energy content of instar I and instar II-III... |

Feeding and growth of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas is simulated by a deterministic model. However, physiological processes, estimated by statistical relationships, have not been tested under extreme environmental conditions such as high level of suspended particulate matter. Ecophysiological experiments were therefore conducted in situ in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron during a spring and neap tide cycle in May 1991, to get a better representation of 2 important components of the energy budget of the Japanese oyster: clearance rate and selection efficiency. The relationships previously established by Raillard et al. (1993) are re-evaluated by integrating the action of high seston load, typical of tidal effect within estuaries, on the physiological... |

Sungo Bay (China) has a mean depth of 10 m, a total area of 140 km(2) and is occupied by several types of aquaculture, whilst opening to the ocean. The production of scallops (Chlamys farreri) cultured on long lines is estimated to exceed 50 000 tonnes (total weight) per year. Selection of sites for scallop growth and determination of suitable rearing densities have become important issues. In this study, we focused on the local scale (e.g. 1000 m) where rearing density, food concentration and hydrodynamics interact. We have developed a depletion model coupling a detailed model of C. farreri feeding and growth and a one-dimensional horizontal transport equation. The model was applied to assess the effect of some environmental parameters (e.g. food... |

The zooplankton of an eutrophic brackish lagoon (Etang de Berre), near Marseille (France) was studied during an annual cycle. It was characterized by large populations of a pelagic copepod (Acartia tonsa ). Grazing on natural particles by this species was investigated. Adults were able to use an extended range of particle sizes, but showed selectivity for particles concentration was observed (14 mu m). Temperature and particles concentration appear to modify the selectivity behavior. Juvenile stages could also catch particles of various size but did not show the same selectivity for the peak particles as adults. Daily food ration was high comparatively to open-sea copepods. Taking into account several results obtained on food ration, egg production and... |

With the application of a two-dimensional nonlinear hydrodynamical-numerical semi-implicit model, the principal tides M(2), S(2), K(2), N(2), K(1), P(1) and O(1) were studied. Energy budgets of the semi-diurnal M(2) and S(2) were calculated separately. The linear sum of these budgets was compared with the tidal energy budget obtained when these two tidal constituents interact. Since a quadratic form for the bottom friction was used, remarkable differences were found. The results show that in the area of the Colorado River delta, the dissipation of tidal energy is very strong. Intense tidal currents were observed in the same region and over the Salsipuedes Sill. Energy budgets calculated for forcing waves of different periods, but of the same amplitude,... |

We evaluated the influence of water temperature (Tw) on the energy acquisition and use in the chilean silverside Basilichthys australis (Eigenmann 1927), an endemic species inhabiting freshwater ecosystems in Chile. We tested the effect of Tw (11.5, 14.0, 18.0, 22.0 and 26.0 °C) on food intake, digestibility, food transit time and metabolic rate. As expected, this study demonstrated that many physiological variables under study were significantly affected by Tw, as well as the net energy balance of this species. Nevertheless, the net energy balance was not strictly related to the range of Tws evaluated. At Tws lower than 14 °C the energy budget was depressed, because food intake was lower than at Tws between 14 and 26 °C, where food intake was higher and... |
