Demand for Urban Forests and Economic Welfare: Evidence from the Southeastern U.S. Cities AgEcon
Zhu, Pengyu; Zhang, Yaoqi.
This study examines the relationship between urban forests and household income and population density in the 149 cities with populations over 40,000 in nine southeastern states. Our empirical results show that urban forest percentage across the cities has characteristics of the environmental Kuznets curve. We find that household income around $39,000 is a threshold that changes the relationship between income and urban forest coverage from negative to positive, whereas the impact of population density on urban forests is just the opposite, from positive to negative when population density is around 180 persons per square kilometer.

Does Social Capital Have a Role in Environmental Kuznets Curve? Spatial Panel Regression Approach AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Zapata, Hector O.; Schafer, Mark J.; Marzoughi, Hassan.
We advance a case for an inclusion of social capital in the environmental Kuznets curve analysis using highly disaggregated data on water pollution in Louisiana. A social capital index and other variables are used in parametric and spatial panel regression models to explain water pollution dynamics.

Global Warming and the Future of Pacific Island Countries AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
This article briefly outlines the cause of global warming, its trends and consequences as indicated by the International Panel on Climate Change. Sea-level rise is one consequence of particular concern to Pacific island states. It also reviews the views of economists about connections between economic growth and global warming. Whereas the majority of economists did not foresee a conflict between economic growth and global warming, the possibility of such a conflict is now more widely recognized following the Stern Report. International efforts, such as through the Kyoto Protocol, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and their atmospheric concentration are discussed and prospects for post-Kyoto policies are considered. It is predicted that a significant...

Modelling the Global Diffusion of Energy Efficiency and Low Carbon Technology AgEcon
Stern, David I..
The aim of this study is to measure and understand the long-term factors behind trends in energy and carbon intensity in different economies. It also looks at how improvements in energy efficiency are spread to countries around the world. Of particular interest is the rate at which efficiency improvements spread from developed to developing countries and what affects this diffusion. Countries that are considered are Australia, major European economies, USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, and India.

Nonstationarity in the Specification of the Environmental Kuznets Curve AgEcon
Zapata, Hector O.; Paudel, Krishna P..
Numerous studies have addressed the question of the econometric specification of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). This paper adds preliminary results on nonstationarity and its effect on functional form using a panel data set for the U.S. by state from 1929 to 1994. It is found that unit-root tests strongly support a unit root in pollutants (sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide) and income when testing individual states. The results from panel data unit root tests provide mixed evidence about nonstationarity in EKC data.

Per Capita Carbon Dioxide Emissions: Convergence or Divergence? AgEcon
Aldy, Joseph E..
Understanding and considering the distribution of per capita carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is important in designing international climate change proposals and incentives for participation. I evaluate historic international emissions distributions and forecast future distributions to assess whether per capita emissions have been converging or will converge. I find evidence of convergence among 23 member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), whereas emissions appear to be diverging for an 88-country global sample over 1960-–2000. Forecasts based on a Markov chain transition matrix provide little evidence of future emissions convergence and indicate that emissions may diverge in the near term. I also review the...

Searching for an Environmental Kuznets Curve in Carbon Dioxide Pollutant in Latin American Countries AgEcon
Poudel, Biswo N.; Paudel, Krishna P.; Bhattarai, Keshav.
This study utilized a semiparametric panel model to estimate environmental Kuznets curves (EKC) for carbon dioxide (CO2) in 15 Latin American countries, using hitherto unused data on forestry acreage in each country. Results showed an N-shaped curve for the region; however, the shape of the curve is sensitive to the removal of some groups of countries. Specification tests support a semiparametric panel model over a parametric quadratic specification.

VALUING TRADEABLE CO2 PERMITS FOR OECD COUNTRIES AgEcon
Karp, Larry S.; Liu, Xuemei.
We estimate a structural model of OECD countries in which GDP and CO2 emissions are endogenous. We use the estimated model to simulate the price of tradeable CO2 permits and the efficiency gains from trade. Our estimated prices are high, relative to previous estimates, and the efficiency gains are substantial. We also find, contrary to previous literature, that higher income is associated with reduced emissions.
