| The Africa Environment Outlook report is the first comprehensive integrated report on the state of the environment about the continent. It provides a detailed analysis of environmental status and trends in Africa, integrated with the impacts of policies, laws and regional agreements. The report also analyses trends in human vulnerability and security due to environmental changes; and proposes alternative policy options for the future. Concrete policy actions are recommended for follow-up at national, sub-regional and regional levels. |

| Resumo: Procedimentos de avaliação de impactos têm sido realizados para analisar e promover estratégias de integração lavoura-pecuária-floresta (ILPF) adotadas em Unidades de Referência Tecnológica (URTs) no âmbito da ?Rede de Fomento ILPF?. A abordagem, baseada no método multicritério Ambitec-Agro, foi realizada em seis URTs em colaboração com equipes da Embrapa e parceiros em todo o país. Estes estudos de caso incluíram desde empresas rurais de grande porte até estabelecimentos familiares, e desde complexos esquemas de integração até simples integração lavoura-pecuária voltada apenas à reforma de pastagens. | Se presenta un diagnóstico sobre la calidad ambiental de la laguna costera El Doctor a partir de las principales variables físico químicas y microbiológicas indicadoras de la contaminación orgánica, su estado trófico e higiénico sanitario en tres campañas de muestreo realizadas en febrero de 2006 y mayo y octubre de 2007. La laguna presenta un alto grado de contaminación orgánica, altos valores de nutrientes, así como, elevadas concentraciones de coliformes totales y fecales, y estreptococos fecales, los cuales, sobrepasan los limites establecidos en las normas cubanas de calidad de agua para usos pesquero y recreativo (NC: 22-99 y NC: 25-99). | The farming of seaweed (Euchema spp.) began in the late 80’s, stimulated by government promotion and the active involvement of international corporations in promoting small-scale production. The industry grew rapidly in the early 90’s reaching 4,000 tonnes in 1995, but has since declined, related partly to marketing difficulties. There has been significant interest in shrimp farming for several years. Tanzania has good international trade routes, suitable climate, and a long coastline well suited to brackish-water pond production. | Environmental Information and Monitoring Programme (EIMP) for the Egyptian coastal waters of Aqaba Gulf was established to initial monitoring and data base system by applying quality control assessments in order to evaluate, protect and sustainable use of coastal regions. Within the framework of this programme six bimonthly field campaigns were carried out annually during 1998 – 2004. A total of 11 coastal stations were selected to cover different locations of the Gulf. | L’étude de l’état environnemental de la lagune de Boughrara a été réalisée deux ans après la mise en service du nouveau pont El Kantara. Les paramètres étudiés dans l’eau (nitrites, nitrates, ammonium, azote, phosphore total, chlorophylle a) et le sédiment (matière organique, faciès sédimentaire) ont été analysés dans trois zones de la lagune appartenants à divers contextes géographiques et environnementaux. Les résultats obtenus ont montré d’évidents signes d’amélioration des conditions générales de cet écosystème. | CORDIO activities were conducted in seven of the Indian Ocean Islands namely, Comores, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion, Rodregues, and Seychelles. On each island biophysical and socio-economic assessments were conducted which have strengthened the annual monitoring of the reefs and collected baseline data for the socio-economic monitoring. In addition, a rapid assessment of the risk posed to island communities of ciguatera poisoning caused by potential increases in abundance of ciguatoxin producing dinoflagellates following bleaching was carried out. | Scenario analysis is a useful tool for exploring key uncertainties that may shape the future of social-ecological systems. This paper explores the methods, costs, and benefits of developing and linking scenarios of social-ecological systems across multiple spatial scales. Drawing largely on experiences in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, we suggest that the desired degree of cross-scale linkage depends on the primary aim of the scenario exercise. Loosely linked multiscale scenarios appear more appropriate when the primary aim is to engage in exploratory dialog with stakeholders.
