Being constituted as the largest risk factor and effective degradation to the Savannah, the man’s intervention in the nature and, especially, the agricultural exploration require analysis and better monitoring. This work aims to analyze the relationship between the agricultural exploration and the environmental degradation in the area of the Savannahs, in 1995-1996. In particular, it is intended, to use multivariate statistical analysis, to verify the factors associated with the intensity of farming predominant in the determination of the degradation pattern, and to obtain indexes of exploration intensity to make possible to categorize and to group the microrregions in terms of degradation potential. The results showed that the intensity of the... |

The Upper Paraguay River Basin is located in the center of South America and harbors one of the largest wetland in the world, known as Pantanal. This floodplain is surrounded by uplands, which presently have most of their area converted into pastures or monocultures, besides being poorly known scientifically. Also, most of these upland areas are considered conservation priorities. Here we present a list of anuran species from a savanna-like area (municipality of Camapuã, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) inserted in the uplands surrounding the Pantanal floodplain, in the Upper Taquari River sub-basin, and evaluate the effectiveness of the sampling effort. Data were obtained through active searches in 22 plots in aquatic habitats, during the rainy season... |

The release of inorganic nutrients into the sea by domestic sewage is a major threat to many marine systems. This eutrophication affects coral-reef organisms indirectly by increased growth of microalgae, leading to increased sedimentation, decreased light availibility, rapid growth of opportunistic macroalgae, etc. In this paper, we report a decrease in the cover of important group of coral-reef builders, the coralline algae. This decrease might be caused by the outlets of sewage water from Zanzibar town. Laboratory and field experiments show that both the growth rate and the calcification of these organisms are negatively affected by high phosphate levels, but not by nitrate or ammonia. |

Groundwater in Spain, as in other arid or semiarid countries worldwide, has been intensely used for the expansion of irrigated agriculture. This booming development has induced a remarkable socioeconomic development in many rural areas but has produced far-reaching environmental problems. In the Spanish Western La Mancha Aquifer, the excessive, and sometimes illegal, water abstraction for irrigation agriculture has resulted in the Aquifer’s overexploitation and has been responsible of the degradation of the associated wetlands “Tablas de Daimiel”, an internationally reputed, Ramsarnominated aquatic ecosystem. To undertake this analysis, a mathematical programming model has been developed to simulate farmers’ behaviour and their responses to different water... |

The effect of riparian deforestation and stream impoundments on an odonate community was studied in áreas of surviving Atlantic forest in Viçosa and in Rio Doce State Park (PERD), Marliéria, Minas Gerais, Brazil. During 1997 16 species of Libellulidae, 4 Coenagrionidae, 2 Gomphidae, 2 Calopterygidae, 1 Megapodagrionidae, 1 Aeshnidae and 3 Protoneuridae were collected. In Viçosa, the association of sampled odonates with lotic or lentic systems, and in PERD for areas with or without riparian vegetation were compared. The results suggest that although overall odonate taxonomic richness is high in areas without riparian vegetation. Likely, because productivity increase of such areas and its invasion by lentic Odonata species. |

Inhaca archipelago is located ca. 32 km east of Maputo City, the capital of Mozambique. Inhaca Island (42.5 km2) and Portuguese Island (3.7 km2) constitute the small archipelago. Shoreline changes and sheet erosion are serious environmental problems affecting the archipelago today. Shorelines are constantly moving and changing. During rain season (October-March), strong winds, violent surf and stormy weather cause large powerful waves that induce changes on shorelines. As these waves pound the beach, sand erodes and is deposited offshore and the beach narrows. In dry season (April-September), waves and winds wash over the beach, bringing back the sand and gradually, the beach becomes wider. The major problems of Inhaca and Portuguese islands fringing... |

We assess the influence of environmental degradation on intrahousehold labour time allocations in rural south Pare, Tanzania. We distinguished three types of areas, namely, severely degraded, medium degraded and non-degraded environmental conditions. The unit of analysis is the household composed of both parents and at least one schoolchild. The results, among others, show that environmental products collection and/or grazing time by the household members is, almost in all groups and in accordance to gender-biased activity, significantly influenced by the environmental conditions. |

The influence of wet aging on the behaviour of flax/epoxy micro-composites composed of single flax fibres embedded in epoxy micro-droplets has been studied. Interfacial shear strength has been examined by debonding the micro-droplets. The apparent interfacial shear strength decreases with immersion time in water, dropping rapidly during the first 15 min of immersion then stabilizing. Drying samples after short immersion periods allows recovery of properties, indicating a plasticization mechanism. For longer immersion times irreversible degradation is observed. Scanning electron microscopy reveals fibre surface peeling, indicating that an internal interface within the fibre is weaker than the fibre/matrix interface after aging. A simple descriptive model... |
