Acid phosphatase activity and leaf phosphorus content in soybean cultivars Scientia Agricola
Raposo,Roberto Wagner Cavalcanti; Muraoka,Takashi; Basso,Luiz Carlos; Lavres Jr.,José; Franzini,Vinicius Ide.
The phosphate fertilization represents the most costly fraction of soybean crop production. Efficient soybean cultivars for P absorption and utilization in soils of medium available P are highly desirable and might contribute for increasing crop production potential. Thirty two soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars recommended for 'Cerrado' and differing in growth cycle (early, semi-early, semi-late, and late) were grown in a dystrophic Typic Haplustox Cerrado soil to evaluate the acid phosphatase activity, P content in the diagnostic leaf, and shoot biomass. There were differences among the soybean cultivars within all maturation groups in acid phosphatase activity and shoot biomass. The diagnostic-leaf P-content showed significant differences on...

Adaptive features of a bacteriolytic enzyme from the style of the mussel Choromytilus meridionalis in response to environmental fluctuations. ArchiMer
Seiderer, L; Robb, F.
The extracellular digestive apparatus of bivalve molluscs consists of a crystalline style containing diverse degradative enzymes which are released during rotation and dissolution of the style. This paper reviews the occurrence of a temperature-regulated bacteriolytic enzyme in the black mussel Choromytilus meridionalis , which is an inhabitant of coastal reefs on the south and south west coast of South Africa. This agent is unable to lyse Micrococcus luteus or Escherichia coli , both of which are susceptible to lysis by a true lysozyme. It appears to have a restricted spectrum of activity which includes both free-living and kelp-associated gram-negative bacteria. In addition, the level of activity varies dramatically according to the environmental water...

Changes in enzymes, phenolic compounds, tannins, and vitamin C in various stages of jambolan (Syzygium cumini Lamark) development Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Brandão,Taís Silva de Oliveira; Sena,Amanda Reges de; Teshima,Elisa; David,Jorge Maurício; Assis,Sandra Aparecida.
The physiological state of a fruit is closely related to ripening and climatic conditions during the growing period when the fruit undergo changes in color, texture, and flavor. The ripening of the fruit can involve a complex series of biochemical reactions with alteration in enzymes activities, phenols, tannins, and ascorbic acid. The activity of enzymes (carboximethylcellulase, polygalacturonase, and pectinlyase), the total concentration of phenolic compounds, condensed tannins, and vitamin C in five stages of maturation were studied. Significant changes were observed between the maturity stages. The phenolic compounds were higher at green stage (705.01 ± 7.41); tannins were higher at green/purple stage (699.45 ± 0.22). The results showed that the...

The M17 family leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) hydrolyze amino acids from the N-terminus of peptides. Many LAPs from parasitic protozoa including Plasmmodium, Trypanosoma and Leishmania, have been intensely investigated because of their crucial roles in parasite biology. In this study, a functional recombinant Toxoplasma gondii LAP (rTgLAP) was expressed in Escherichia coli and its enzymatic activity against synthetic substrates for aminopeptidase, as well as the cellular localization was determined. Our results indicated that TgLAP is a functional aminopeptidase in the cytoplasma of T. gondii.

Cloning, expression and characterization of alcohol dehydrogenases in the silkworm Bombyx mori Genet. Mol. Biol.
Wang,Nan; Shi,Haifeng; Yao,Qin; Zhou,Yang; Kang,Lequn; Chen,Huiqin; Chen,Keping.
Alcohol dehydrogenases (ADH) are a class of enzymes that catalyze the reversible oxidation of alcohols to corresponding aldehydes or ketones, by using either nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP), as coenzymes. In this study, a short-chain ADH gene was identified in Bombyx mori by 5'-RACE PCR. This is the first time the coding region of BmADH has been cloned, expressed, purified and then characterized. The cDNA fragment encoding the BmADH protein was amplified from a pool of silkworm cDNAs by PCR, and then cloned into E. coli expression vector pET-30a(+). The recombinant His-tagged BmADH protein was expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3), and then purified by metal chelating affinity chromatography. The...

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to verify the activity of some digestive enzymes in four fish species with different feeding habits. Knowledge of these enzymatic activities can help us to understand the species' digestive processes. The species chosen for this study were Ctenopharyngodon idella (herbivore), Rhamdia quelen (omnivore), Leporinus obtusidens (omnivore) and Hoplias malabaricus (carnivore). The digestive tract of these species was divided into four portions to estimate enzymatic activity: stomach, anterior, mid and posterior intestine. Ctenopharyngodon idella had the highest amylase and maltase activities in all portions of the gut, followed by L. obtusidens . The highest trypsin activity was observed in all gut portions of H. malabaricus,...

Boucaud, C; Lebesnerais, C; Lubet, P; Lihrmann, I.
Feeding experiments carried out on Crassostrea gigas allowed the authors to set up the stages and the timing of the movement of food throughout the digestive tract. Various activities involved in digestion (glycosidases, esterases, and peptidases) were investigated histochemically in the digestive tract in order to localize the sites of absorption and the sites of protein and carbohydrate digestion. An explicative model of the different stages of digestion is proposed.

Enzymatic regulation of photosynthetic and light-independent carbon fixation in Laminaria setchellii (Phaeophyta), Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta) and Iridaea cordata (Rhodophyta) RChHN
CABELLO-PASINI,ALEJANDRO; ALBERTE,RANDALL S..
Carbon is acquired through photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic processes in marine algae. However, little is known about the biochemical regulation of these metabolic pathways along the thallus of seaweeds. Consequently, the objective of this study was to assess the distribution of in vivo carboxylation pathways and to relate them to the in vitro activity of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RUBISCO), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) in the Phaeophyte Laminaria setchellii, the Chlorophyte Ulva lactuca, and the Rhodophyte Iridaea cordata. Chlorophyll-a levels did not vary in U. lactuca and I. cordata. However, pigment levels were significantly lower in the meristematic region of L....

Different parameters have been followed regularly at various times of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicholus ) ripening. Concentration in NaCl and water content as well as values of water activity and pH are constant and remain quite stable during the entire study period. The relatively acid pH value and the quite low measured water activity level created good conditions for preventing microbial putrefaction at room temperature. The free amino acids and non proteinaceous nitrogen increase indicated the modifications occurring in muscular proteins. These changes resulted in an important proteolytic activity modulated by the medium conditions, especially; pH, temperature and ionic strength. The enzymatic activity slowed down regularly with time but was not...

Influence of season, environment and feeding habits on the enzymatic activity of peptidase and β-glucosidase in the gastrointestinal tract of two Siluriformes fishes (Teleostei) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Duarte,Silvana; Paiva,Marco A. R.; Lara,Camila C.; Bemquerer,Marcelo P.; Araújo,Francisco Gerson.
The enzymatic activities involved in the digestion of proteins and carbohydrates were compared among three organs of the digestive track of two Siluriformes fish species, and between two areas: a reservoir, and an area downriver of it. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that the digestive organs of species with varied feeding habits have different enzymatic activities, and that the enzymatic activity differs among seasons and environmental conditions. The iliophagous/herbivorous species Hypostomus auroguttatus Kner, 1854 had higher trypsin-like, chymotrypsin-like peptidase and β-glucosidase activity in the intestine when compared with the omnivorous species Pimelodus maculatus Lacepède, 1803, whereas the latter had more hepatic trypsin-like activity than...
