Bonamia parasites: a rapidly changing perspective on a genus of important mollusc pathogens ArchiMer

Organisms of the genus Bonamia are intracellular protistan parasites of oysters. To date, 4 species have been described (B. ostreae, B. exitiosa, B. perspora and B. roughleyi), al though the status of B. roughleyi is controversial. Introduction especially of B. ostreae and B. exitiosa to naïve host populations has been shown to cause mass mortalities in the past and has had a dramatic impact on oyster production. Both B. ostreae and B. exitiosa are pathogens notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the European Union. Effective management of the disease caused by these pathogens is complicated by the extensive nature of the oyster production process and limited options for disease control of the cultured stocks in open water. A transmissão horizontal de fungos entomopatogênicos tem papel importante na epizootiologia, pois está diretamente associada à disseminação do agente causal da doença de insetos. Em hospedeiros que apresentam restrita mobilidade, a presença de pragas secundárias no agroecossistema pode ajudar na formação de focos secundários da doença e, com isso, aumentar a mortalidade das pragaschave. Para tanto, a disseminação de Beauveria bassiana, introduzida inoculativamente através de iscas tipo telha, foi avaliada em um bananal infestado por Cosmopolites sordidus (Piracicaba) e outro por C. sordidus e Metamasius hemipterus (Botucatu). First report of White spot syndrome virus in farmed and wild penaeid shrimp from Lagoa dos Patos estuary, southern Brazil BJM

In this study, we detected White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in wild Farfantepenaeus paulensis collected in the Lagoa dos Patos estuary and cultivated Litopenaeus vannamei. This is the first report of WSSV in F. paulensis from Lagoa dos Patos and farmed L. vannamei shrimps in Rio Grande do Sul.

Host Stage Structure and Baculovirus Transmission in Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Larvae: a Laboratory Examination of Small Scale Epizootics Neotropical Entomology

The effects of stage structure and host density on baculovirus horizontal transmission were examined in the laboratory using larvae of the cabbage moth, Mamestra brassicae L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Insects were reared at three instar combinations and three host densities in closed containers with infected larvae. Insects were observed daily and the number of deaths and time to death were recorded. Levels of virus mortality were marginally higher in the containers where a higher density of hosts was introduced. Larvae appeared to have a greater risk of infection when late instar combinations were used. Final levels of mortality of older larvae were significantly higher than those of younger larvae. Natural Occurrence of the Entomopathogenic Fungi Metarhizium, Beauveria and Paecilomyces in Soybean Under Till and No-till Cultivation Systems Neotropical Entomology

The occurrence of the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium, Beauveria and Paecilomyces in soybean under till and no-till cultivation systems was studied. The number of colony forming units per g of soil and per cm² of leaf area was determined. Soil under no-till system showed a higher incidence of entomopathogenic fungi, but no difference in fungal density was observed on leaves. Thus the probability of infection for susceptible leaf inhabiting insects should be similar in both systems.

Temporal variability and progression of Neozygites sp. (Zygomycetes: Entomophthorales) in populations of Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) (Acari: Tetranychidae) Anais da SEB

The objective of this study was to characterize epizootics of Neozygites sp. by investigating the relationship between the pathogen, the host, Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) (Cassava green mite = CGM), and climatic factors. Epizootics were studied from March through October 1994 in nine cassava fields at Piritiba, state of Bahia, Brazil. In all fields the pathogen appeared when CGM density was moderate to high. Infected CGM were first detected in northwestern fields, with an apparent progression to the southeast. The onset of the epizootic in the earliest field was observed 23 days prior to the onset of the epizootic in the latest field.
