ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (FOS) supplementation on the development of Mangalarga Marchador suckling foals. Sixteen Mangalarga Marchador foals, from birth to 75 days of age, were evaluated in a completely randomized design, with two treatments (experimental group and control group) with eight repetitions (animals). The foals were evaluated through body weight, morphometric, and circumferential measures. The daily, weekly, and cumulative weight gains were recorded and the morphometric measures were: withers height, croup height, body length, mid-back height, mid-back width, and thorax, shin, knee, and forearm circumferences. The mean body weight was 32.3 and 77.9 kg at birth and 75 days...

Padilha,Felipe Gomes Ferreira; Andrade,Agnaldo Machado de; Fonseca,Ana Beatriz Monteiro; Godoi,Fernanda Nascimento de; Almeida,Fernando Queiroz de; Ferreira,Ana Maria Reis.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate, in a practical manner, the use of linear and angular measurements and different animal-performance indices in a study on the breed-specific conformation of Brazilian Sport Horses training for eventing. These data can form the basis for the development of future studies based on the parameters evaluated and the calculations made. Seventeen Brazilian Sport Horses training for eventing were selected. Morphometric evaluations were made of all animals using linear and angular measurements. The linear measurements were withers, croup, and barrel heights; body, croup, shoulder, neck, and head lengths; head, chest, and hip widths; distance from the elbow to the ground and from the sternum to the ground (empty substernal); and...

Onchocerca cervicalis Railliet & Henry, 1910 is a nematode that parasite equines. Its ocurrence has already been reported in the States of Mato Grosso and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Different diagnostic techniques were used in this study to establish the prevalence of the parasite in Rio de Janeiro State and the biting behaviour of the simuliid and ceratopogonid species suspected of being vectors was studied. All of the biopsies made in the region of the withers, shoulder and umbilicus of 57 animals were negative. Necropsies carried out on 28 equines revealed 4 to be positive for the parasite; 2 for microfilariae and 2 for adults. Simuliid flies showed preference for biting the ventral region and ceratopogonids the lower parts of the legs of horses....

Linhares,Jessica Martins; Filippo,Paula Alessandra Di; Bogossian,Paulo Moreira; Guerra,Rafael Vianna Barbosa de Almeida; Bustamante,Sebastian Ricardo Bustamante; Carvalho,Cláudio Baptista de; Ferreira,Felipp da Silveira.
ABSTRACT: Acid-base and electrolyte disorders have been described in horses associated during and after exercise. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of cavalcade competition on the acid-base and hydroelectrolytic balance in Mangalarga Marchador horses. For this purpose, 15 geldings, 6.2 ± 1.2 years old and clinically healthy, were distributed into three groups of five animals each. Horses were trained to take part in cavalcade competitions. Animals were submitted to cavalcade along 4km (G4), 8km (G8), and 20km (G20) at mean speeds of 15km h-1, 12km h-1, and 12km h-1, respectively. From each horse, venous blood samples were collected before exercise (T0) and immediately after (T1) cavalcade. Bicarbonate ion (HCO3-), pH, partial pressure...

ABD EL-RAZIK,Khaled Abd El-Hamid; ABUELNAGA,Azza Sayed Mohamed; YOUNES,Abdelgayed Metwaly; ATTA,Nagwa Sayed; ARAFA,Amany Ahmed; KANDIL,Mai Mohamed.
Abstract PCR was applied for the discovery of adulteration of crude and processed beef meat with horse and donkey tissue. This was performed by blending (w/w) horse or donkey meat to beef meat in an extent up to 1:10000 (0.01%). The sensitivity was resolved as high as 0.01%. All used primers showed specificity in the PCR reactions utilizing layout DNAs from three animal species. PCR application on 96 beef meat and meat product samples gathered randomly from street vendors and prominent retail markets (24 of burger, 16 of minced meat, 24 of kofta, 16 of sausage, 7 of raw meat and 9 of launcheon) uncovered 6 positive for donkey tissue (3 from sausage, 2 from minced meat and 1 from kofta) and 2 positive for horse tissue (from sausage). This basic PCR...

Use of ozonotherapy in habronemosis skin lesions in horses: literature review MV&Z
Tonin, Ketellyn da Silva Israel; Oliveira, Larissa Carolina de; Oliveira, Leticia Ronco de.
Cutaneous Habronemosis, commonly known as summer sore, is a nodular dermatological condition that primarily affects horses and is caused by gastrointestinal endoparasites. This nodular dermatosis occurs when larvae of the nematodes Habronema sp and Draschia megastoma are deposited in areas where horses are unable to repel flies of the species Musca domestica and Musca stabulans. The resulting lesions can be painful and itchy, leading to the formation of rapidly evolving ulcerative granulomas. Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms, the animal’s living region history, and complementary exam results. Conventional treatment includes surgical or chemical debridement, application of healing ointments, administration of corticosteroids, anti-inflammatories,...

West Nile Fever in Brazil: new challenge for veterinarians MV&Z
Silva, Aila Solimar Gonçalves; Rehfeld, Izabelle Silva; Santos, Beatriz Senra Álvares da Silva; Franklin, Luisa Feliciano de Souza; Teixeira, Raffaella Bertoni Cavalcanti; Lobato, Zélia Inês Portela; Guedes, Maria Isabel Maldonado Coelho; Costa, Érica Azevedo.
The West Nile virus, the agent of the disease called West Nile fever (WNF), was identified in Brazil for the first time in 2009 and, since then, the presence of antibodies against the virus and/or its nucleic acid has been identified in humans, equines and birds. The virus is responsible for neurological infections in susceptible birds, equines and humans, and is considered a global public health problem. The control of WNF is closely related to the role of veterinarians in the surveillance of cases in equines, animals considered sentinels in the identification of the disease.
