Activity of polyphenoloxidase and peroxidase in non-dormant potato tubers treated with sprout suppressors Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
SANTOS,Mirelle Nayana de Sousa; LIMA,Paula Cristina Carvalho; ARAUJO,Fernanda Ferreira de; ARAÚJO,Nicolas Oliveira de; FINGER,Fernando Luiz.
Abstract One of the major problems affecting potatoes quality on stored is the susceptibility to enzymatic browning, which occurs mainly after wounds during the harvest, at postharvest handling and by aging, leading to the development of dark color compounds. Enzymatic browning is associated with the action of polyphenoloxidases (PPO) and peroxidases (POD), which use phenolic compounds and oxygen as substrates. The products of these enzymes cause undesirable changes of color and flavor of processed potato products. The present study aimed to evaluate some kinetic properties based to optimum pH and reaction temperature, and to determine changes on activity of potato tubers PPO and POD treated with sprouting suppressors compounds menthol and eugenol. For...

Antifungal treatment with carvacrol and eugenol of oral candidiasis in immunosuppressed rats BJID
Chami,N.; Chami,F.; Bennis,S.; Trouillas,J.; Remmal,A..
Carvacrol and eugenol, the main (phenolic) components of essential oils of some aromatic plants, were evaluated for their therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of experimental oral candidiasis induced by Candida albicans in immunosuppressed rats. This anticandidal activity was analyzed by microbiological and histopathological techniques, and it was compared with that of nystatin, which was used as a positive control. Microbiologically, carvacrol and eugenol significantly (p<0.05) reduced the number of colony forming units (CFU) sampled from the oral cavity of rats treated for eight consecutive days, compared to untreated control rats. Treatment with nystatin gave similar results. Histologically, the untreated control animals showed numerous hyphae on...

Rosa,Jessica Miranda; Bonato,Letícia Bicudo; Mancuso,Carolina Bragine; Martinelli,Laira; Okura,Mônica Hitomi; Malpass,Geoffroy Roger Pointer; Granato,Ana Claudia.
ABSTRACT: Medicated wound dressings are important barriers to avoid contamination and, when they contain antimicrobial additives, can be used as treatment for infected wounds. There are several types of polysaccharide materials that serve as matrices for medicated wound dressings, among them, sodium alginate. For the preparation of the films studied in this paper, sodium alginate was employed in combination with essential oils/oleoresins (EO/OL) of six peppers that are commonly used in cooking. The EO/OL were incorporated at three different concentrations (low, intermediate and high). Most of the films prepared had better dispersion of the EO/OL at the intermediate concentration. All films studied in this research were dissolved in water at different...

Biological properties of medicinal plants: a review of their antimicrobial activity J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Silva,NCC; Fernandes Júnior,A.
Plants have been used for thousands of years to flavor and conserve food, to treat health disorders and to prevent diseases including epidemics. The knowledge of their healing properties has been transmitted over the centuries within and among human communities. Active compounds produced during secondary vegetal metabolism are usually responsible for the biological properties of some plant species used throughout the globe for various purposes, including treatment of infectious diseases. Currently, data on the antimicrobial activity of numerous plants, so far considered empirical, have been scientifically confirmed, concomitantly with the increasing number of reports on pathogenic microorganisms resistant to antimicrobials. Products derived from plants may...

Urdampilleta,Juan D.; Amat,Aníbal G.; Bidau,Claudio J.; Kolb Koslobsky,Nicolás.
The composition of the essentials oils of five species of Conyza Less from Argentina was determined by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer. This composition is associated to morphological and cytogenetic characters. The monoterpenes constitute more than 60% of the essential oils in C. blakei, C glandulitecta, C. sumatrensis var. sumatrensis and C. sumatrensis var. floribunda, in which limonene is the predominant compound. In C. bonariensis and C. primulaefolia the monoterpene content constitute less than the 40%. C. bonariensis presents only 13% limonene, while in C. primulaefolia it is absent. The similarity analysis of monoterpenes showed a relationship between the morphological and cytogenetic analysis, and the monoterpene content character seems to be...
