Biotic and abiotic stresses can alter the hormone balance and trigger the activation of pathways involved in the cotton stress responses, resulting in the abscission of squares, flowers and young bolls and consequent reductions in the seed cotton yield and fiber yield. As part of the mechanism that primarily regulates the protective response of plants against stresses, ethylene is considered a key hormone involved in this response, and increased ethylene synthesis has been observed when plants are subjected to stress. Thus, the development of strategies aimed to mitigate their negative effects can reduce the shed rate of reproductive structures and positively impact cotton productivity. Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) fruits, cv. Santa Clara, were harvested at the breaker stage from commercial fields in Brazlândia, Brazil, to investigate the ability of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to retard tomato fruit ripening. Fruit without external blemishes were graded for size (diameter = 80±5 mm) and mass (m = 130±10 g), placed inside hermetically sealed boxes, and 1-MCP was applied for 12 hours (T = 22±1°C; RH = 80-85%) at four different concentrations: 0 (control), 250, 500 and 1000 mL.L-1. Affecting cucurbit hormonal status by a ZYMV transient expression vector National Institute of Agronomic Research

Squash and cucumber plants were infected with ZYMV strains engineered to over-express enzymes involved in ethylene and gibberellin biosynthesis. Presence of the inserted ACS gene within the viral RNA was transient and the insert was deleted after 20-40 days. Ethylene over-expressing plants produced very high ethylene levels and were severely stunted. Monoecious cucumbers produced earlier, consecutive female flowers. Gibberellin over-expression was deduced from the observed phenotypic change, plants were taller and flowered earlier.

The aim of this review is to critically analyze the role of silver nitrate (AgNO3) in modulating plant growth and development. In recent years, basic studies on ethylene regulation opened new vistas for applied research in the area of micro-propagation, somatic embryogenesis, in vitro flowering, growth promotion, fruit ripening, and sex expression. Silver nitrate has proved to be a very potent inhibitor of ethylene action and is widely used in plant tissue culture. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar alterações físicas, fisiológicas e químicas, durante a maturação de duas cultivares de sapoti (Manilkara sapota L.), relacionando-as às taxas respiratórias e de liberação de etileno. Os frutos foram colhidos no estádio de maturidade fisiológica, avaliados no dia da colheita e armazenados em temperatura de 26±2ºC e umidade relativa de 55±5%. A atividade respiratória e a produção de etileno foram determinadas diariamente; perda de massa, firmeza, acidez total titulável, pH, sólidos solúveis, açúcares solúveis totais e senescência foram avaliados nos tempos de 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 e 12 dias de armazenamento. Three degrees of red mite infestation (Oligonychus ilicis McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae) were evaluated with regard to leaf anatomy, photosynthetic gas exchange and leaf ethylene production, in a commercial crop of approximately 12-year-old trees of Coffea arabica 'Catuaí Vermelho'. As a complementary study, foliar anatomy was also evaluated in a recuperated crop of C. arabica 'Mundo Novo' that had presented a high degree of red mite infestation during the dry period of the prior growing season. The red mite-infested leaves were bronze-coloured, with intensity proportional to the degree of internal damage. This paper discusses our own and other researchers' results and laboratory procedures on onion's pungency, soluble solids, dry matter, respiration rate, carbohydrates and catabolism-related enzymes under different storage conditions. The variability in parameters such as carbohydrate composition, pungency, soluble solids and soluble uronic acid concentration in water is growth dependent, and defines the quality of onion bulbs at harvest time. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar aspectos fisiológicos e microbiológicos de beterrabas minimamente processadas. A taxa respiratória e a produção de etileno foram avaliadas até quatro horas após o processamento e durante 10 dias de armazenamento a 5oC. As análises microbiológicas foram realizadas no dia do processamento e após 10 dias de conservação. Raízes intactas apresentaram a menor taxa respiratória (5 mL CO2 kg-1 h-1), enquanto beterrabas raladas e descascadas obtiveram taxa respiratória de 30 mL CO2 kg-1 h-1 após quatro horas do processamento. Beterrabas minimamente processadas apresentaram um pico respiratório no segundo dia de armazenamento (80 mL CO2 kg-1 h-1), estabilizando em 30 mL CO2 kg-1 h-1 no quarto dia. Management practices that maintain carbohydrate reserves in tangerines are necessary in order to ensure good yields. This experiment was carried out with the object of evaluating the levels of carbohydrates in the leaves, and consistency in the production of the Ponkan tangerine (Citrus reticulata Blanco) when subjected to chemical thinning with five concentrations of Ethephon for three consecutive years. Studies on its conservation during storage have been mainly restricted to using low temperatures and modified atmospheres. In this study we investigated the influence of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the physiological and biochemical changes that sapodilla cell wall undergoes during ripening and evaluated its potential to preserve sapodilla fruits at postharvest. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus) fruit produce low amounts of ethylene during ripening and is therefore considered as a non-climacteric fruit. Here we examined the involvement of ethylene in early stages of fruit development. Ethylene production was high in ovary and young fruitlets but decreased at later stages of development. Increased fruit set was observed in plants treated with ethylene biosynthesis inhibitor. Cloning and characterisation of a CTR1-like gene in Cucurbita pepo National Institute of Agronomic Research

A homologue of CTR1, one of the key genes in the regulation of ethylene response pathway of Arabidopsis, has been cloned and characterised in Cucurbita pepo. The Cup-CTR1 gene is predicted to encode for a protein containing the structural features of Map kinase kinase kinases (MAPKKKs) and shares 58-85 % identity with CTR1-like proteins in Arabidopsis and other plant species. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that Cup-CTR1 is more related to Arabidopsis CTR1 and related proteins in tomato, rose and Delphinium, than to other plant MAPKKKs. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of ethylene on peel color and compositional changes in ‘Lane late’ orange stored under refrigerated and ambient conditions. Physiologically mature, but green-peeled, oranges were exposed to ethylene gas under room temperature and high relative humidity for 24 hours. Comercialmente, bananas e plátanos são colhidos na fase conhecida como 'verde-11 maduro' e após a colheita os frutos amadurecem de forma desuniforme. Por isso, o 12 método de desverdecimento chamado de climatização tem sido utilizado para 13 proporcionar o amadurecimento rápido e homogêneo dos frutos. No entanto, existem 14 poucas informações sobre climatização de plátanos na literatura. Differential esterase activity in aerial and root tissues from 6as DHR wheat lines after phytohormonal treatments JBAG

Activity of aerial and root esterases in wheat DHR lines of chromosome 6AS was tested. Different patterns were found after applying phytohormone treatments that mimic stress conditions. Ethylene treated plants showed the lowest aerial and root weights; also, the smallest foliar area, in conjunction with absence of esterase activity in more than half of the lines, was observed. Additional studies will contribute to clarify the key role of ET in the expression of defense related genes.

Effect of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid, and ethrel on gerbera in vitro culture Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute

[[abstract]]Gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii, Bolus) plantlets in 125 ml flask received 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 20 ppm Ethrel and 0.01,0.1,1 mM 1- aminocyclopropane-1- carboxylic acid (ACC) to study the effect of ethylene and ethylene biosynthesis through cultured in vitro. The good quality plantlets which had more adventitious roots, no overgown stem, no etiolated plantlets by the addition of 5, 10 ppm Ethrel. However, 20 ppm Ethrel caused etiolation of leaves and less roots. This result shows that 20 ppm Ethrel for gerbera plantlets was overdsage. The addition of ACC induced the deteriorated effect on the growth of plantlets. The damage of roots and stunted growth were observed in ACC treatment.
