Broad-scale mapping of seafloor habitats in the north-east Atlantic using existing environmental data ArchiMer
Vasquez, Mickael; Mata Chacon, D.; Tempera, Fernando; O'Keeffe, Eimear; Galparsoro, Ibon; Sanz Alonso, J. L.; Goncalves, Jorge M. S.; Bentes, Luis; Amorim, Patricia; Henriques, Victor; Mcgrath, Fergal; Monteiro, Pedro; Mendes, Beatriz; Freitas, Rosa; Martins, Roberto; Populus, Jacques.
If marine management policies and actions are to achieve long-term sustainable use and management of the marine environment and its resources, they need to be informed by data giving the spatial distribution of seafloor habitats over large areas. Broad-scale seafloor habitat mapping is an approach which has the benefit of producing maps covering large extents at a reasonable cost. This approach was first investigated by Roff et al. (2003), who, acknowledging that benthic communities are strongly influenced by the physical characteristics of the seafloor, proposed overlaying mapped physical variables using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to produce an integrated map of the physical characteristics of the seafloor. In Europe the method was adapted to...

Can Formaldehyde Exposure Induce Histopathologic and Morphometric Changes on Rat Kidney? International Journal of Morphology
Golalipour,Mohammad Jafar; Azarhoush,Ramin; Ghafari,Soraya; Davarian,Ali; Fazeli,Seyyed Amirhossein.
Formaldehyde is used traditionally for fixing the cadaver, and vaporized during dissection and practical studying on cadaver. This study was designed to determine the histopathologic and morphometric changes of rat kidney while all of the experiments were exposed to formaldehyde for 18 weeks. 28 male albino Wistar rats were divided into the following three experimental groups (E1: 2hrs/d, 2d/w; E2: 2hrs/d, 4d/w; E3: 4hrs/d, 4d/w) and one control group (C). when the exposure period was expired the animals were anaesthetized with chloroform. After cervical dislocation, the abdomen was dissected and the kidneys were taken. The kidney specimens were sectioned and stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin technique for histologic and morphometric study. Data were...

New insights from age determination on toxic element accumulation in striped and bottlenose dolphins from Atlantic and Mediterranean waters ArchiMer
Lahaye, Virginie; Bustamante, Paco; Dabin, W; Van Canneyt, O; Dhermain, F; Cesarini, C; Pierce, G; Caurant, Florence.
This study aimed at comparing toxic element (Hg, Cd) bioaccumulation in relation to age for bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus) and striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) from Mediterranean and Atlantic waters. Metal concentrations were also measured in selected prey to infer metal exposure through the diet. As expected, Mediterranean prey exhibited the highest Hg levels, probably as a consequence of the Hg enrichment of the Mediterranean Sea. Comparing the predators from each area and taking age into account, Mediterranean bottlenose dolphins displayed higher Hg levels than Atlantic dolphins (p = 0.032), whereas Mediterranean striped dolphins did not (p = 0.691). The consumption of Myctophid fish, which showed the highest Hg levels (105 +/- 80 ng g(-1)...

Numerical modelling of heterogeneous sediment transport: new insights for particulate radionuclide transport and deposition ArchiMer
Rivier, Aurélie; Le Hir, Pierre; Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Laguionie, Philippe; Morillon, Mehdi.
A sediment transport module which solves simultaneously bedload and suspended load is developed, in a context of multiclass sediment transport. Different approaches are used to simulate each transport mode: (i) bedload transport results from divergence of transport capacity and (ii) suspension transport is solved using erosion and settling fluxes associated with advection/diffusion equation. A focus is made on the significance of hiding and exposure processes in case of heterogeneous sediment bed. Their influence is strong on bedload sediment transport, and induces specific trends of sediment sorting in sand dunes. The application to heterogeneous sediment dynamics in the macrotidal area of the Normand Breton Gulf (English Channel), show that hiding and...

Participatory Vulnerability Assessment in the Context of Conservation and Development Projects: A Case Study of Local Communities in Southwest Cameroon Ecology and Society
van Vliet, Nathalie; Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen; vanvlietnathalie@yahoo.com.
People living in landscapes of high conservation value are trapped between their dependence on natural resources to meet their development aspirations and the international pressure to conserve those resources. Although it is increasingly recognized that the conservation of some natural resources cannot happen without providing alternative livelihood solutions for local communities dependent on them, global experiences illustrate that the successful integration of conservation and development continues to be elusive. We adapted the approach based on “participatory vulnerability assessments” developed for climate change research and applied it to changes occurring in a conservation and development context. As a case study, we focused...

Radiation exposure in nuclear medicine: real-time measurement BABT
Sylvain,Iara; Bok,Bernard.
French regulations have introduced the use of electronic dosimeters for personal monitoring of workers. In order to evaluate the exposure from diagnostic procedures to nuclear medicine staff, individual whole-body doses were measured daily with electronic (digital) personal dosimeters during 20 consecutive weeks and correlated with the work load of each day. Personal doses remained always below 20 µSv/d under normal working conditions. Radiation exposure levels were highest to tech staff, nurses and stretcher-bearers. The extrapolated annual cumulative doses for all staff remained less than 10 % of the maximum legal limit for exposed workers (2 mSv/yr). Electronic dosimeters are not technically justified for routine survey of staff. The high sensitivity...

Scorecarding and Heat Mapping: Tools and Concepts for Assessing Strategic Uncertainty AgEcon
Detre, Joshua D.; Briggeman, Brian C.; Boehlje, Michael; Gray, Allan W..
The dramatic changes occurring throughout the agriculture industry are creating new and different uncertainties that result from a turbulent business climate. The objective of this paper is to present a methodology to understand, assess and evaluate, and manage strategic uncertainty. The approach is to present a mental model that frames assessment of strategic uncertainty from a potential and exposure perspective. Scorecarding and heat mapping assessment tools operationalize the mental model. Participants in an executive agribusiness educational workshop applied this mental model and the assessment tools to one of three hypothetical seed companies. The participants then provided an evaluation of the usefulness and effectiveness of uncertainty scorecarding...

The agricultural impact of pesticides on Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles (Amphibia: Anura) ascertained by comet assay Rev. Bras. Zool.
Gonçalves,Macks W.; Gambale,Priscilla G.; Godoy,Fernanda R.; Alves,Alessandro Arruda; Rezende,Pedro H. de Almeida; Cruz,Aparecido D. da; Maciel,Natan M.; Nomura,Fausto; Bastos,Rogério P.; Marco-Jr,Paulo de; Silva,Daniela de M..
ABSTRACT Amphibians inhabiting agricultural areas are constantly exposed to large amounts of chemicals, which reach the aquatic environment during the rainy season through runoff, drainage, and leaching. We performed a comet assay on the erythrocytes of tadpoles found in the surroundings of agricultural fields (soybean and corn crops), where there is an intense release of several kinds of pesticides in different quantities. We aimed to detect differences in the genotoxic parameters between populations collected from soybeans and cornfields, and between them and tadpoles sampled from non-agricultural areas (control group). Tadpoles collected from ponds located at soybean fields had significantly more DNA damage, followed by tadpoles collected from...

The use of biomarkers in Daphnia magna testing: 3. Rapid toxicity testing of pure chemicals and sediment pore waters using ingestion and digestive enzyme activity OMA
De Coen, W.M.; Vangheluwe, M.L.; Janssen, C.R..
In this study, 4 rapid (90 min) toxicity tests were developed using ingestion and digestive enzyme activity of Daphnia magna juveniles. Ingestion activity was assessed using fluorescent labelled latex micro-beads and digestive enzyme activity (trypsin, beta-galactosidase and esterase) was measured in homogenates using chromogenic (N-benzoyl-L-arginine-4-nitroanilide) and fluorogenic (4-methylumbelliferyl-B-D-galactoside and fluorescein diacetate) substrates. All assays and toxicity endpoints were evaluated for their potential use as routine toxicity testing tools for pure chemicals and sediment pore waters. The observed high correlation coefficients (r(2)>0.9) between the short-term toxicity values and the acute toxicity endpoint (24h...
