ALTERNATIVE DEVELOPMENT ON THE ORGANIC SECTOR HORIZON COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE IN HUNGARY Organic Eprints
Dezsény , Zoltán; Balázs, Bálint; Réthy, Katalin.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) gained increasing attention and experienced rapid growth in the US and Western Europe over the past 25 years as a special form of direct marketing where producers and consumers form an alliance in a relationship based on mutual trust, openness, shared risk and shared rewards.Using local, organic food-systems as the point of departure the paper aims to explore the farm enterprises that follow practices of CSA in Hungary. Our study confirmed that CSA can be identified as a sustainable rural business strategy for innovative organic farmers and has transformative potential for food-system localization, providing decent livelihood, good care of natural resources and strengthens social cohesion within the rural-urban...

BMBF-Verbundprojekt "Informationsmanagement der Zukunft in regionalen Lebensmittelketten" (RegioFood_Plus): Aufbau und Ziele Organic Eprints
Kramer, E.; Schiller, S.; Schulz, M..
One obstacle for the access of micro sized food enterprises to trading chains is the lack of IT based real-time specifications for produce, and to-date availability of information about management. To resolve this, a research project has established to develop an user-optimised, cloud-based enterprice resource planning (ERP) system that is tailored to suit the needs of such small enterprises. New functions such as reporting systems for food management and sustainability certification reports will be integrated. As a first result, an analysis showed that approx. 11 per cent of process based criteria of IFS and BRC certification can be mapped with to-date ERP systems, accentuating the need for this development.

Differences in retail strategies on the emerging organic market Organic Eprints
Aertsens, Joris; Mondelaers, Koen; Van Huylenbroeck, Guido.
Abstract: Purpose – The organic product market can be considered as an emerging market. Since the 1990s it has experienced rapid growth, and supermarket chains have become the sales channel with the largest market share and are the main driver for further growth. However, different supermarket retail groups have very different strategies concerning the marketing of organic products. The purpose of this paper is to gain insight into the different strategies of retailers who are active in the organic product market and to explain the drivers which may underlie them. Design/methodology/approach – The strategies of the three most important Belgian retailers that market organic products, and in particular organic beef, are analyzed. Data were collected...

Spindler, Edmund A..

Juister, Evelyn; Berner, Nina; Häring, Anna Maria.
Berlin metropolitan region features a high demand for organic products. However, regional sales are not expanded in the same way. Gaps in the knowledge how to design and implement suitable marketing concepts to highlight individual USPs may be the reason. The objective of our research was to identify education needs in direct marketing. From the research perspective, the main question was in which way knowledge gaps could be identified, especially the ones, which are not explicitly expressed by direct marketers. We tried to indirectly assess whether knowledge gaps exist by using indicators (obstacles to sale and purchase).

Evaluating the contribution of innovation networks to resilient farming systems Organic Eprints
Muenchhausen, Susanne; Haering, Anna Maria; Juister, Evelyn.
Eberswalde University has been establishing an innovation network for organic farming and processing in the Federal State of Brandenburg and the city of Berlin in the north-eastern part of Germany. During the last decade, the network enabled several cross-disciplinary study and research projects. Organic farmers, small and medium-sized organic food processors and trade businesses, research institutes, advisory services as well as governmental and non-governmental organisations contributed to the development of this network. The projects that are jointly implemented focus on strategy development and practical problem solving for organic food value chains.

Münchhausen, von, Susanne; Häring, Anna Maria; Risku-Norja, Helmi.
Our working group aims to discuss successful approaches of managing increasing quantities of organic food produce - successful in terms of maintaining product quality, trust, integrity and higher value while at the same time increasing turnover. The workshop will focus on two particular aspects. Firstly, the business strategies of growing organic businesses and initiatives, and secondly, the specific instruments used in organisation and management that help to meet the diverging objectives related to growth in turnover on the one hand, and organic values, quality, integrity and trust on the other. In the workshop we will look at these challenges and management options from the perspective of practitioners in the agri-food industry.

HealthyGrowth - From niche to volume with integrity and trust Organic Eprints
HealthyGrowth: From niche to volume with integrity and trust Organic Eprints

HealthyGrowth: How can organic supply chains grow without losing their added value? Results and recommendations Organic Eprints
Münchhausen, von, Susanne; Häring, Anna Maria; Knickel, Karlheinz.
The HealthyGrowth Project’s goal was the analysis of growth processes in the organic food sector. It examined how to safeguard the integrity and transparency of the value chain despite the increasing ‘distance’ between the producer and the consumer. It examined businesses and food initiatives that succeed in balancing growth, maintaining value added products and convincing the consumer that a higher price is justified. The recommendations for entrepreneurs and policy makers aim to emphasise the potential to promote values-based growth processes in the organic sector in a more comprehensive way.
