Antibacterial effects of Thymus algeriensis extracts on some pathogenic bacteria Biological Sciences
Messaoudi, Mohammed; Benreguieg, Mokhtar; Merah, Maroua; Messaoudi, Zakarya Ayoub.
Despite the presence of many antibiotics, bacterial resistance is growing steadily and some of these antibiotics have become ineffective, which poses a major challenge to the health sector. In this context, this work has demonstrated, in vitro, the inhibitory action of the bacterial growth resulting from methanolic and ethanolic extracts of Thymus algeriensis Boiss. & Reut., a medicinal plant species harvested from the Algerian South-west area, as well as the determination of the phenolic content of those crude extracts. The methanolic extract of Thymus algeriensis showed a significant antibacterial effect with 16.5 and 19 mm against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. Klebsiella pneumoniae was not inhibited by both...

Anti-tumor properties of blackseed (Nigella sativa L.) extracts BJMBR
Ait Mbarek,L.; Ait Mouse,H.; Elabbadi,N.; Bensalah,M.; Gamouh,A.; Aboufatima,R.; Benharref,A.; Chait,A.; Kamal,M.; Dalal,A.; Zyad,A..
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo anti-cancer effect of Nigella sativa L. seed extracts. The essential oil (IC50 = 0.6%, v/v) and ethyl acetate (IC50 = 0.75%) extracts were more cytotoxic against the P815 cell line than the butanol extract (IC50 = 2%). Similar results were obtained with the Vero cell line. Although all extracts had a comparable cytotoxic effect against the ICO1 cell line, with IC50 values ranging from 0.2 to 0.26% (v/v), tests on the BSR cell line revealed a high cytotoxic effect of the ethyl acetate extract (IC50 = 0.2%) compared to the essential oil (IC50 = 1.2%). These data show that the cytotoxicity of each extract depends on the tumor cell type. In vivo, using the DBA2/P815 (H2d) mouse model,...

Biomimetic Approaches for the Development of New Antifouling Solutions: Study of Incorporation of Macroalgae and Sponge Extracts for the Development of New Environmentally-Friendly Coatings ArchiMer
Sánchez-lozano, Ilse; Hernández-guerrero, Claudia Judith; Muñoz-ochoa, Mauricio; Hellio, Claire.
Biofouling causes major economic losses in the maritime industry. In our site study, the Bay of La Paz (Gulf of California), biofouling on immersed structures is a major problem and is treated mostly with copper-based antifouling paints. Due to the known environmental effect of such treatments, the search for environmentally friendly alternatives in this zone of high biodiversity is a priority to ensure the conservation and protection of species. The aim of this work was to link chemical ecology to marine biotechnology: indeed, the natural defense of macroalgae and sponge was evaluated against biofoulers (biofilm and macrofoulers) from the same geographical zone, and some coatings formulation was done for field assays. Our approach combines in vitro and...

Conventional and alternative antifungal therapies to oral candidiasis BJM
Anibal,Paula Cristina; Sardi,Janaina de Cássia Orlandi; Peixoto,Iza Teixeira Alves; Moraes,Julianna Joanna de Carvalho; Höfling,José Francisco.
Candida-associated denture stomatitis is the most common form of oral candidal infection, with Candida albicans being the principal etiological agent. Candida adheres directly or via an intermediary layer of plaque-forming bacteria to denture acrylic. Despite antifungal therapy to treat denture stomatitis, infection is reestablished soon after the treatment ceases. In addition, many predisposing factors have been identified as important in the development of oral candidiasis, including malnourishment, common endocrine disorders, such as diabetis mellitus, antibacterial drug therapy, corticosteroids, radiotherapy and other immunocompromised conditions, such as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). These often results in increased tolerance to the most...
