Breeding Quality Protein Maize (QPM): Protocols for Developing QPM Cultivars AgEcon
Vivek, B.S.; Krivanek, A.F.; Palacios-Rojas, N.; Twumasi-Afriyie, S.; Diallo, Alpha O..
This manual is intended for maize breeders who would like to start developing quality protein maize (QPM) cultivars. It is a compilation and consolidation of several breeding protocols successfully used at CIMMYT over two decades of QPM development and breeding. A brief background and the basic theory of QPM genetics are explained, leading up to detailed methods and procedures of QPM development.

Correlation Analysis of Financial Contagion: What One Should Know Before Running a Test AgEcon
Corsetti, Giancarlo; Pericoli, Marcello; Sbracia, Massimo.
This paper builds a general test of contagion in financial markets based on bivariate correlation analysis – a test that can be interpreted as an extension of the normal correlation theorem. Contagion is defined as a structural break in the data generating process of rates of return. Using a factor model of returns as theoretical framework, we nest leading contributions in the literature as special cases of our test. We show that, while the literature on correlation analysis of contagion is successful in controlling for a potential bias induced by changes in the variance of global shocks, current tests are conditional on a specific yet arbitrary assumption about the variance of country specific shocks. Our results suggest that, for a number of pairs of...

Cross-Border Securities Clearing and Settlement Infrastructure in the European Union as a Prerequisite to Financial Markets Integration: Challenges and Perspectives AgEcon
de Carvalho, Cynthia Hirata.
The importance of an efficient securities clearing and settlement system lies on the safer transfer of ownership of assets against payment. Such a system must be developed in a way to minimize the risks involved on securities transactions, and it must still offer lower costs, which do not hinder the intention to acquire or dispose securities. The cross-border securities clearing and settlement transactions within Europe, especially equities transactions, are still much higher and riskier than if cleared and settled domestically. The fragmented structure of local securities depositories is hindering the integration of financial markets in Europe, because investors are not stimulated to enjoy opportunities cross-border. Thus a smoothly functioning integrated...

Export market integration in the European Union AgEcon
Gil Pareja, Salvador; Sosvilla Rivero, Simon.
This paper examines the degree and recent evolution (1988-2001) of export-price dispersion among European Union countries. It also explores the effect of exchange rates on export-price dispersion by reviewing the experience of some European countries that participated in the exchange rate stability zone. The results indicate that export-price dispersion across European Union countries was usually lower than across OECD countries. Moreover, although there is little evidence of convergence, this is stronger across European Union countries. Finally, even though price dispersion was often lower across European Union countries where exchange rates have been relatively stable than across countries with relatively volatile exchange rates, exchange-rate stability...

Scope Economies of Lending and Collecting Deposits in Microfinance Institutions AgEcon
Hartarska, Valentina M.; Parmeter, Christopher F..
While economies of scope of lending and mobilizing deposits in banking are justified theoretically (Diamond, 1984) and found empirically (see Saunders, 1999), in microfinance, the existence and the magnitudes of scope economies has not been investigated. We use a semi parametric smooth coefficient model to estimate these economies using the largest publicly available dataset of over 2,800 annual observations from MFIs across the world. We accommodate the outreach objective of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) by measuring outputs as the number of clients (borrowers and savers) rather than the traditional volume of loans and deposits and compare the results from the two cost functions. We find substantial scope economies of 47 percent on average. The results...

The Asian Maize Biotechnology Network (AMBIONET): A Model for Strengthening National Agricultural Research Systems AgEcon
Pray, Carl E..
This report reviews the impacts of the Asian Maize Biotechnology Network (AMBIONET), organized by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) with funding from the Asian Development Bank to strengthen the capacity of public maize research institutions in China, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam to produce high-yielding, disease resistant, stress tolerant maize cultivars. It was found that, during its lifetime (1998-2005), AMBIONET clearly benefited researchers and institutions in participating countries, as well as CIMMYT. In addition, there was good progress toward developing improved cultivars. Asian farmers are just beginning to gain from the work, but their future benefits will likely pay for AMBIONET’s relatively...
