Would HIV-1-positive African women use interventions of AIDS testing, medication (oral and vaginal), and vaginal disinfection to reduce the likelihood of HIV-1 transmission to their child ? In this pilot study in two west African cities (Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, and Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso), social workers gave a native-language questionnaire to 607 pregnant women at four Maternal and Child Health Centers. The aim of this study was to investigate age-related changes in collagen content in muscles of normal and double-muscled (DM) bovine foetuses. Psoas major (PM) and triceps brachii (TB) muscles were collected from foetuses at 110 to 260 days post-conception (p.c.), frozen and powdered. Cyanogen bromide (CNBr) digestion and hydroxyproline measure ments were carried out on the powder. Le peptide apparenté à l’hormone parathyroïdienne (PTHrP) joue un rôle important dans la régulation de la croissance osseuse foetale et néonatale. Chez la femelle gestante et/ou allaitante, l’hormone sécrétée par les parathyroïdes foetales, les membranes placentaires et/ou la glande mammaire en lactation, stimule les transferts calciques placentaires, module la tonicité utérine en fonction de la taille du (ou des) foetus, contrôle le débit artériel mammaire et la teneur du lait en calcium et en phosphore. Chez le nouveau-né, le PTHrP apporté par le lait pourrait intervenir dans la régulation de la motricité intestinale et de l’absorption intestinale du calcium et du phosphore.

Croissance périnatale de l'enfant dakarois

Do maternal nutritional reserves limit fetal growth in undernourished women ?

Au cours de ce travail il a été recherché si l'excès de mortalité périnatale observé à Dakar par rapport aux pays industrialisés ne pouvait pas s'expliquer en partie du moins, par une malnutrition intra-utérine se traduisant par une irrégularité marquée de la courbe de croissance au voisinage du terme. Dans ce but, 397 nouveaux nés ont été examinés et classés selon leur état de maturation neurologique et somatique en enfant prématuré, à terme et post-mature. For 4 years, we determined the mode and risk of mother-to-child transmission of HTLV-I in a prospective cohort of 34 children born to seropositive mothers in Franceville, Gabon. We also determined the prevalence of antibodies to HTLV-I/II in siblings born to seropositive mothers. Antibodies to HTLV-I/II were detected by Western blot, and the proviral DNA was detected by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The risk of seroconversion to anti-HTLV-I for the 4 years of follow-yp was 17.5 %. Anti-HTLV-I/II and proviral DNA were only detected after age 18 months.
