Agro-ecology: beyond food Organic Eprints
Félix, Georges F.; Timmermann, Cristian.
Some may view indigenous communities as being conservative and backwards. However, the Kabekwa in Costa Rica show that such communities can be adaptable and innovative. In response to changing circumstances, this community has been adapting its farming practices constantly, benefiting from it in multiple ways. In this case study we show some of the additional advantages agro-ecology provides to farmers beside food. Using the concept of meaningful work we explore how knowledge-intensive farming stimulates the development of skills, improves self-determination and provides incentives for younger generations to work on the land.

Analysis of organic and conventional beetroot juice assortment in Warsaw shops and consumer sensory evaluation of selected products Organic Eprints
KAZIMIERCZAK, RENATA; JABŁOŃSKA , PAULINA; REMBIAŁKOWSKA, EWA.
Organic food is produced in accordance with strictly defined rules, established by the European Union legislation. Thanks to this is considered to be safer and healthier than produced conventionally. Many studies show that organic products, especially vegetables, fruits and preserves contained more dry matter, vitamin C, vitamin B group, total sugar, indispensable amino acids and mineral compounds. At the same time organic plant products usually have been in general better evaluated in terms of taste and smell than conventional food. The aim of this study was to analyze the assortment of beetroot juice from organic and conventional stores in Warsaw, Poland and consumer sensory evaluation of selected products. Analysis of the products was carried out in...

Concepções de agricultores ecológicos do Paraná sobre alimentação saudável. Organic Eprints

Contribution of organic farming to public goods in Denmark Organic Eprints
Jespersen, Lizzie Melby; Baggesen, Dorte Lau; Fog, Erik; Halsnæs, Kirsten; Hermansen, J.E.; Andreasen, Lise; Strandberg, Beate; Halberg, Niels.
The potential contribution of organic farming to the public goods, ‘Nature and Biodiversity’, ‘Environment’, ‘Energy and Climate’, ‘Human Health and Welfare’ and ‘Animal Health and Welfare’ in Denmark is guided and partly secured by the principles and specific requirements of the EU Organic Regulation. However, other factors, such as the production type, farm size, geographical location and—not the least—the management of the farm, also influence the contribution. Using the ban on synthetic pesticides and restricted use of antibiotics, including the requirements to compensate for and prevent such uses in organic farming, as examples, the positive and negative contributions of organic farming in relation to selected public goods were analysed. The...

Discrimination of conventional and organic white cabbage from a long-term field trial study using untargeted LC-MS-based metabolomics Organic Eprints
Mie, Axel; Laursen, Kristian Holst; Aberg, K Magnus; Forshed, Jenny; Lindahl, Anna; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Olsson, Marie; Knuthsen, Pia; Larsen, Erik Huusfeldt; Husted, Søren.
The influence of organic and conventional farming practices on the content of single nutrients in plants is disputed in the scientific literature. Here, large-scale untargeted LC-MS-based metabolomics was used to compare the composition of white cabbage from organic and conventional agriculture, measuring 1,600 compounds. Cabbage was sampled in 2 years from one conventional and two organic farming systems in a rigidly controlled long-term field trial in Denmark. Using Orthogonal Projection to Latent Structures-Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA), we found that the production system leaves a significant (p = 0.013) imprint in the white cabbage metabolome that is retained between production years. We externally validated this finding by predicting the production...

Eating quality of Holstein bull calves fed only grass or purely herbs matches that of concentrate-fed veal calves Organic Eprints
Therkildsen, M.; Jensen, S.K.; Vestergaard, M..
Organic meat production from Holstein calves born in dairy herds require that the bull calves are raised outdoor at least 6 months a year, and on large quantities of roughage in the diet. This study aimed at elucidating if Holstein bull calves fed either purely grass or purely herbs prior to slaughter would differ in meat quality traits, fatty acid composition and sensory profile and if they differed in quality aspects from concentrate-fed veal calves.

Eco-efficient production of spring barley in a changed climate: a Life Cycle Assessment including primary data from future climate scenarios. Organic Eprints
Niero, Monia; Ingvordsen, Cathrine Heinz; Peltonen-Sainio, Pirjo; Jalli, Marja; Lyngkjær, M. F.; Haushildt, Michael Z.; Jørgensen, Rikke B..
The paper has two main objectives: (i) to assess the eco-efficiency of spring barley cultivation for malting in Denmark in a future changed climate (700 ppm [CO2] and +5 °C) through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and (ii) to compare alternative future cultivation scenarios, both excluding and including earlier sowing and cultivar selection as measures of adaptation to a changed climate. A baseline scenario describing the current spring barley cultivation in Denmark was defined, and the expected main deviations were identified (differences in pesticide treatment index, modifications in nitrate leaching and change in crop yield). The main input data originate from experiments, where spring barley cultivars were cultivated in a climate phytotron under controlled...

Green veal is not dark red Organic Eprints
Therkildsen, M.; Jensen, S.K.; Vestergaard, M..
Among many farmers, butchers and consumers, the expectation is that meat arising from grazing cattle generally is darker than meat from cattle primarily fed cereals. Without necessarily being the truth, this dogma is a constraint to the marketing of ‘green’ meat. In an attempt to increase the supply of organic meat from young cattle, we need to know which quality parameters are the characteristics for this type of meat, including colour characteristics.

Grønt kalvekød er ikke mørkerødt Organic Eprints
Therkildsen, M.; Jensen, S.K.; Vestergaard, M..
