The content of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in bovine milk in México is unknown, and high levels could increase the health risk for adult people who ingest milk. The aim of this study was to determine the level of IGF-1 and its relationship with fat content using liquid chromatography with ion trap as a mass detector in milk marketed in Durango, México. During 18 months we analyzed, three times, six lots chosen randomly of whole, reduced-fat, and low-fat milk of three brands. Each sample was pre-treated using cut-off membranes, digested with trypsin, and subjected to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. There was a significant difference in the mean concentration of IGF-1 between the brands and types of milk analyzed (Chi square=34.66;... |

Empty body and carcass chemical composition were determined in 67 Nellore bulls from Selection Nellore (NeS) and Control Nellore (NeC) herds of an animal breeding program for growth, slaughtered at 570 days of average age, after 100 days of feedlot. Selection Nellore animals had, respectively, 360 and 430 kg of initial and slaughter body weight, and NeC animals had 318 and 373 kg for the same traits. Animals were slaughtered and empty body composition was determined by chemical analysis of the components blood, hide, head and feet, viscera and carcass. Tissue deposition rates and gain chemical composition were also determined based on gains estimated by comparative slaughter technique. Significant differences were detected between NeS and NeC animals for... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this experimental study was to evaluate the effects of different dietary energy sources on the carcass and meat traits of feedlot Nellore bulls. A total of 48 Nellore bulls at 32 months of age with 354.35±19.56 kg body weight were studied for 85 days. The bulls were allotted to four groups of 12 individuals: Whole corn grain - diet based on whole corn grain; Ground corn - diet based on ground corn grain; Citrus pulp - diet based on citrus pulp; and Steam-flaked corn - diet based on steam-flaked corn. Diets did not influence carcass quality or meat quality. Average values for fat depth, rib eye area, shear force, total cooking losses, and carcass yield were 4.97 mm, 74.71 cm2, 5.85 kgf, 26.82%, and 52.0%, respectively. Based on the... |

The purpose of this study was to determine how feeding sheep coffee pulp affects carcass characteristics and what changes occur in physicochemical, antioxidant capacity and oxidation of the meat during refrigerated storage. The experiment was carried out in 15 Blackbelly lambs weighing an average 22.86±0.76kg. The animals were assigned to three treatments: T0=control diet, T1=diet with 8% coffee pulp, and T2=diet with 16% coffee pulp. After fattening for 56 days, the sheep were slaughtered and the carcasses assessed. The inclusion of 16% coffee pulp in the diet increased carcass dressing from 48.19 to 50.83% and decreased the amount of fat in rumen and intestines from 3.43 to 2.53% (P<0.05). The inclusion of coffee pulp in the diet did not alter the... |

The Brazil sacrifices many dairy calves at birth, which can become a very serious problem merchandising. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the physical carcass composition and meat quality characteristics of Holstein calves in feedlot or pasture with supplementation, slaughtered at 140, 180, 220 or 260 kg body weight. In the early termination calves had on average 57 kg and 58 days of age. The confined animals were fed forage (corn) and concentrated, in the ratio of 40:60 and concentrated pasture supplemented with 1% body weight. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial 2 x 4 (two feeding systems x four slaughter weights). It was observed a significant interaction between slaughter weight and finishing system only for... |

Carcass traits of twenty Texel x Ile de France crossbred lambs slaughtered after weaning (52 days of age), or at 25, 30 and 35kg live weight were evaluated. Lambs were placed in individual stalls (1.5m²) and fed ad libitum with a diet composed of sorghum silage (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) and a concentrate mix (ground corn, soybean meal, calcium carbonate and salt). Commercial dressing percentage was related quadratically with slaughter weight, being highest in lambs slaughtered after weaning. Real dressing percentage increased linearly. Shoulder proportion decreased with slaughter weight, whereas leg, rib and neck proportions remained constant. Carcass fat was positively correlated to the slaughter weight. Slaughter of feedlot Texel x Ile de France... |

The objective of the present work was to quantify the constitution and composition chemistry of the precooked goat buchada produced in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The goat buchada presented considerable yield in relation to the live weight. High protein content was observed in the products analyzed. The lipid content presented high variation as result of the lack of standardization of products produced in the state and no control on parameters such as age, weight and breed of the slaughtered animals was observed. Although no difference (P<0.05) in the lipid content was observed, the highest percentages were observed in samples from Remígio and Barra de Santa Rosa, with 14.52 and 15.90%, respectively, as result of the addition of high amounts of... |

Olive is one of the strategic products in Iran, and due to the significant cultivation area of this product, oil companies should be equipped with suitable processing equipment. Unfortunately, despite the high capacity of olive in Iran, oil companies are equipped with imported machines. In this study, the construction and evaluation of the Three-counter device of Iran has been developed. The machine has three oil, water and olive pulp outputs. In order to evaluate the machine, the amount of moisture content and fat extracted from the machine was checked at 2500 and 3500 rpm and 30 and 45% water content. Also, four different samples Manzallina, Fishemi, Kalamata and Oily were used in this experiment. The main components of the machine include an electric... |

ABSTRACT This experiment was conducted to evaluate growth performance and carcass characteristics of barrows from 25 to 100 kg fed diets with different dietary net energy (NE) levels. Seventy-two barrows with initial body weight (BW) of 25.19±2.13 kg were allotted using a completely randomized block design to one of six dietary NE treatments (2300, 2380, 2460, 2540, 2620, and 2700 kcal kg−1), which had two pigs per replicate and six replicates per treatment. Diets were formulated to be fed in three phases (25 to 60, 60 to 70, and 70 to 100 kg BW). The six different dietary NE densities were met by adding soybean oil in place of the inert ingredient (kaolin) to a corn-soybean meal-based diet. Increasing dietary NE decreased average daily feed intake and... |

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of includingcassava wastewater (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, or 1.5 L animal-1 day-1) in diets of feedlot-finished lambs on the physicochemical characteristics and fatty acid composition of their meat. Thirty-two uncastrated lambs atan average age of 167 days and an average body weight of 24.76 ± 3.00 kg were distributed into four groups in a completely randomized design with eight animals per group for each treatment. Inclusion of cassava wastewater linearly reduced cooking losses, shear force, and yellow intensity and linearly increased the fat content of the meat. The amounts of myristic, stearic, linoleic, and total fatty acids were changed. Additionally, an effect of cassava wastewater was observed on the amounts of... |
