A confirmation method for the presence of the Siberian flying squirrel via feces OAK
嶌本, 樹; 古川, 竜司; 鈴木, 圭; 柳川, 久; YANAGAWA, Hisashi.

Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,D.G.; Silva,D.R.; Silva,P.R.L.; Cícero,E.A.S.; Ferraz,A.L.J.; Lemos,M.V.F.; Fagliari,J.J..
The efficiency of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) combined with selective enrichment broth was compared with the standard microbiological techniques for detection of Salmonella Dublin in fecal samples of 10 to 15-days-old Holstein calves, experimentally infected with 10(8) CFU of Salmonella Dublin. Seventy-six fecal samples were analyzed using PCR associated with selenite cystine (SC) and Muller-Kauffmann tetrathionate (TMK) broths and standard microbiological techniques. Regardless of the selective enrichment broth used, the standard microbiological techniques were significantly better than PCR in detection of positive samples of Salmonella Dublin. However, the simultaneous use of both techniques provided detection of a larger number of positive...

Comparação dos caldos selenito cistina, tetrationato Muller-Kauffmann e Rappaport-Vassiliadis no isolamento de Salmonella Typhimurium Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Ávila,L.G.; Silva,D.G; Fagliari,J.J..
Three selective enrichment broths - selenite cystine (SC), Muller-Kauffmann tetrathionate (MKT) and Rappaport-Vassiliadis (RV) - were compared, for Salmonella Typhimurium isolation from rectal swabs of a calf experimentally infected. The bacteriological procedure involved pre-enrichment in Hajna-GN broth (only for the samples inoculated in RV broth), selective enrichment (SC, MKT and RV broths), culture in modified brilliant green agar (BGA), presumptive biochemistry tests (using triple-sugar-iron agar and lysine-agar) and slide agglutination test with poli-O and poli-H Salmonella antisera. SC and MKT broths were more efficient in the isolation of Salmonella Typhimurium (12 positive samples), whereas RV broth had a lower efficiency in the microbiological...

Comparison of DNA-extraction methods and Selective Enrichment broths on the detection of Salmonella Typhimurium in swine feces by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) BJM
Freschi,Carla Roberta; Carvalho,Luiz Fernando de Oliveira e Silva; Oliveira,Celso José Bruno de.
The aim of this study was to compare different DNA-extraction methods and selective enrichment broths for their effectiveness to detect Salmonella Typhimurium in artificially inoculated swine feces samples (100 CFU/g) by polymerase chain reaction. After enrichment in Rappaport-Vassiliadis, selenite cystine or Müller-Kauffmann tetrathionate, aliquots were used for DNA extraction by three different methods: boiling-centrifugation, phenol-chloroform and salting-out. Aliquots of extracted DNA were then used as template in PCR. The selective enrichment broths had no effect on the efficiency of PCR when boiling-centrifugation and salting-out were used. On the other hand, phenol-chloroform was superior (P<0.05) when combined to Rappaport-Vassiliadis....

Comparison of methods for mycobacteria isolation from swine feces BJM
Oliveira,Eugenia Márcia de Deus; Rodriguez,César Alejandro Rosales; Rocha,Vivianne Cambuí Mesquita; Ambrosio,Simone Rodriguez; Ohara,Patrícia Miyuki; Amaku,Marcos; Ferreira,Fernando; Dias,Ricardo Augusto; Leão,Sylvia Cardoso; Ferreira Neto,José Soares.
Swine mycobacteriosis is an important cause of carcass condemnation at abattoirs. One of the best ways to recognize the etiologic agent involved, in live animals, is the fecal isolation, as 94% of the lesions are located in the digestive tract. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to compare the performance of four decontamination methods followed by inoculation in three different culture media, totalizing twelve procedures of mycobacteria search from swine fecal samples experimentally contaminated. The swine feces were artificially contaminated with 0.02 g of Mycobacterium avium, PIG-B strain, and subjected to mycobacteria isolation trial. The protocols used were: 1) modified Petroff or basic method; 2) modified Lowenstein-Jensen or acidic method;...

Viero,João Luis Carricio; Schaedler,Carlos Eduardo; Azevedo,Eduardo Bohrer de; Santos,João Vitor Ail dos; Scalcon,Ricardo de Mello; David,Diego Bitencourt de; Rosa,Fabiane Quevedo da.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate endozoochory dispersal, recuperation, and germination of weedy rice (Oryza sativa L.) and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli L.) seeds passed through the digestive system of cattle. The experiment was divided into two phases: first, the daily seed recuperation rate was determined after passing through the digestive system of six steers. Each animal was dosed individually with 1000 weedy rice seeds and 13,818 barnyardgrass seeds, and these seeds were subsequently collected from feces. In the second phase, seed germination and emergence rate after passing or not passing through the digestive system of cattle were determined in two types of substrates (fecal plaque and soil) in a 2×2 factorial design....

Evaluation of extraction methods for progesterone determination in rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) feces by radioimmunoassay Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
KORNDÖRFER,Clotilde Maria; MEIRELLES,Cyro Ferreira; BUENO,Ives Cláudio da Silva; ABDALLA,Adibe Luiz.
The purpose of this study was to find a practical procedure for the extraction of progesterone (P4) from feces and to determine if the P4 plasma profiles during pregnancy were reflected in the total fecal P4 of pregnant rabbits. The rabbit was used as model for the techniques. Plasma and feces were collected from 11 rabbits during a period of 42 days. Three different methods of P4 extraction were used. The total P4 was measured by solid-phase radioimmunoassay (RIA) with 125I-P4 as the tracer. Results suggested that it was possible to extract total P4 from rabbit feces with methanol and petroleum ether. Plasma and fecal P4 profiles were compared for both pregnant and ovariectomized rabbits. It was possible to differentiate total P4 extracted from day two...

Salmonellosis is a foodborne disease caused by bacteria of the genus Salmonella, being pigs and pork-products potentially important for its occurrence. In recent decades, some serovars of Salmonella have shown increase of resistance to conventional antimicrobials used in human and animal therapy, with serious risks for public health. The aim of this study was to evaluate feces (n=50), mediastinal (n=50), mesenteric (n=50) and mandibular (n=50) lymph nodes obtained from slaughter houses for Salmonella spp. Positive samples were serotyped and subjected to an in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility test, including the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production. Salmonella species were identified in 10% (20/200) of total samples. From these, 20% (10/50)...

Jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi) predation by puma (Puma concolor) in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest Biota Neotropica
Magioli,Marcelo; Ferraz,Katia Maria P. M de Barros.
Abstract The jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi) is the second most widespread carnivore of the Americas, and considered a threatened species in Brazil. However, most of its ecology is unknown, and few information is available about species that may act as its predator. In this study we present evidence of the predation of a jaguarundi by puma (Puma concolor) in a protected area (Carlos Botelho State Park) in the state of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. We collected fecal samples in trails and dirt roads in the study area, and by using hair cuticle imprints and medullar patterns, we identified a puma scat containing hair and claws of a jaguarundi. Pumas usually consume carnivores, but the presence of felids is uncommon, especially in Brazil. This could be...

Salmonella serovars in laying hen flocks and commercial table eggs from a region of São Paulo state, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Freitas Neto,OC de; Galdino,VMCA; Campello,P L; Almeida,AM de; Fernandes,SA; Berchieri Júnior,A.
Salmonella spp. is the main originator of human foodborne diseases worldwide and is mainly transmitted by food containing eggs. In Brazil, as a result of the lack of studies and data collection very little is known about the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in laying hen flocks and commercial table eggs. Consequently the present study was elaborated and aimed at generating data about Salmonella spp. in part of the Brazilian egg production chain. Eight flocks of day-old chicks, eight flocks of adult laying hens (four vaccinated with bacterin against Salmonella Enteritidis and four unvaccinated) and commercial table eggs from four supermarkets were examined. Salmonella spp. was isolated in 50 % of the newly hatched chicks, 25 % of the adult flocks and 1.5 % of...
