Bilateral hydrosalpinx in a mare - a case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rechsteiner,S.F.; Rodrigues,R.F.; Cruz,L.A..
During a research visit for tissue collection at an abattoir located in Pelotas, Brazil, one female genital tract showed both enlarged oviducts. The reproductive tract was collected and analyzed. Occluded uterine tubes and an increase in the organ volume due to the large amount of fluid in the organ lumen were the macroscopic findings. Three samples, corresponding to isthmus, ampulla and infundibulum from each uterine tube and one sample from the endometrium were collected. Samples were fixed in Bouin's solution and processed in light microscopy. Microscopically a decrease in the number of folds and also an increase in the lumen of the organ were observed, mainly in the ampulla and infundibulum. The epithelial lining of the uterine tubes ranged from...

Dietary intake and eating behavior in depot medroxyprogesterone acetate users: a systematic review BJMBR
Silva,P.; Qadir,S.; Fernandes,A.; Bahamondes,L.; Peipert,J.F..
Because of weight gain, women often discontinue hormonal contraception, especially depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA). Our objective was to conduct a systematic review of studies describing dietary intake or eating behavior in DMPA users to understand whether the use of DMPA is associated with changes in dietary habits and behaviors leading to weight gain. We searched the PubMed, POPLINE, CENTRAL Cochrane, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases for reports published in English between 1980 and 2017 examining dietary intake or eating behavior in healthy women in reproductive age and adolescents using DMPA (150 mg/mL). Of the 749 publications screened, we excluded 742 due to duplicates (96), not addressing the key research question (638), not reporting...

Ali,M. N; Onyeanusi,B. I; Ayo,J. O; Ojo,S. A; Salami,S. O; Nzalak,J. O; Byanet,O.
The study was carried out to determine the effect of season on the female reproductive organs of the African Giant rat using the standard methods, with the aim of obtaining the base-line values. The weights of the oviduct/uterus, vagina and the entire tubular organ were consistently higher during the harmattan season (0.789 ± 0.07 g, 2.708 ± 0.19 g and 3.455 ± 0.25 g, respectively) than the hot dry (0.591 ± 0.02 g, 2.239 ± 0.13 g and 2.831 ± 0.14 g, respectively) and the rainy season (0.723 ± 0.04 g, 2.412 ± 0.01 g and 3.148 ± 0.12 g, respectively). The mean weight and length of the ovary were not significantly different throughout the season, suggesting that the AGR may breed throughout the year. The slight increase in the weight of the tubular organ...

Effect of wearing a swimsuit on hydrodynamic drag of swimmer BABT
Marinho,Daniel Almeida; Mantha,Vishveshwar Rajendra; Vilas-Boas,João Paulo; Ramos,Rui Jorge; Machado,Leandro; Rouboa,Abel Ilah; Silva,António José.
The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of wearing a swimsuit on swimmer's passive drag. A computational fluid dynamics analysis was carried out to determine the hydrodynamic drag of a female swimmer's model (i) wearing a standard swimsuit; (ii) wearing a last generation swimsuit and; (iii) with no swimsuit, wearing light underwear. The three-dimensional surface geometry of a female swimmer's model with different swimsuit/underwear was acquired through standard commercial laser scanner. Passive drag force and drag coefficient were computed with the swimmer in a prone position. Higher hydrodynamic drag values were determined when the swimmer was with no swimsuit in comparison with the situation when the swimmer was wearing a swimsuit. The last...

Environmental effects and repeatability of the follicular diameter in mares R. Bras. Zootec.
Rua,Miguel Alejandro Silva; Quirino,Celia Raquel; Matos,Luis Fonseca; Rodrigues,Ana Cláudia Cerqueira; Bartholazzi Junior,Aylton.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of environment on follicular diameter and repeatability of the size of preovulatory follicles of mares. Temperature, rainfall, and photoperiod were measured, and their effects were evaluated on follicular dynamics. Data were studied by analysis of variance of follicular size and environment traits. During the five years, 7% double ovulations and 159 anovulatory follicles were recorded. Mean preovulatory follicle diameters of left and right ovaries were 39.3±3.8 and 39.2±3.5 mm respectively. There was no effect of evaluation year on follicular diameter. Reproduction season affected the right preovulatory follicle diameter. There was no effect of temperature and rainfall on follicular diameter....

Estrous cycle and stress: influence of progesterone on the female brain BJMBR
Lovick,T.A..
The female brain operates in a constantly changing chemical milieu caused by cyclical changes in gonadal hormones during the estrous cycle (menstrual cycle in women). Such hormones are highly lipophilic and pass readily from the plasma to the brain where they can influence neuronal function. It is becoming clear that the rapid reduction in peripheral circulating progesterone, which occurs during the late diestrous phase of the cycle, can trigger a withdrawal-like response, in which changes in GABA A receptor expression render hyper-responsive certain brain areas involved in processing responses to stressful stimuli. The periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) is recognised as an important region for integrating anxiety/defence responses. Withdrawal from...

Leptin and adiponectin in the female life course BJMBR
Lecke,S.B.; Morsch,D.M.; Spritzer,P.M..
Adipose tissue secretes a variety of adipokines, including leptin and adiponectin, which are involved in endocrine processes regulating glucose and fatty metabolism, energy expenditure, inflammatory response, immunity, cardiovascular function, and reproduction. The present article describes the fluctuations in circulating leptin and adiponectin as well as their patterns of secretion in women from birth to menopause. During pregnancy, leptin and adiponectin seem to act in an autocrine/paracrine fashion in the placenta and adipose tissue, playing a role in the maternal-fetal interface and contributing to glucose metabolism and fetal development. In newborns, adiponectin levels are two to three times higher than in adults. Full-term newborns have...

Morphological Characteristics and Motor Fitness Among Girls Attending Different Secondary-School Programmes International Journal of Morphology
Kovac,Marjeta; Strel,Janko; Jurak,Gregor; Leskosek,Bojan.
During adolescence, a drop of interest in physical activity in girls' free time and a stagnation in some physical fitness indicators can be observed. The physical fitness of a sample of 14,920 girls from three different types of secondary-school educational programmes (academic, technical and vocational) with different amounts of physical education lessons in the curriculum was analysed. Data from the Slovenia's monitoring system of students' physical fitness (SLOFIT), including three morphological measures and eight motor tests, was used. A multivariate analysis of variance was used to test the differences between the type of programme and the age of students. There are statistically significant (p<0.001) differences between the educational programmes...

Short notes and reviews Bidder’s organ in the female of Bufo ictericus: morphological characterization Naturalis
Farias, C.F.; Brito-Gitirana, L. de; Carvalho-e-Silva, S.P..
Bidder’s organ has been cited as a structure present only in males of the toad family Bufonidae, and is used as a systematic characteristic. In this study, we examined females of Bufo ictericus in order to ascertain whether this structure also occurs in females. Macroscopic observations and light microscopy technique for paraffin embedding were performed. This study reveals that females of Bufo ictericus can have a Bidder’s organ with typical morphology, and in close spatial relationship with the ovary. This suggests that the Bidder’s organ is not an exclusive structure for male toads, but that it may also occur in active females.

The Effect of a Group Exercise Program on Muscular Function among Fall-Prone Elderly Women International Journal of Morphology
Behpoor,Naser; Darabi,Mohammad Reza; Hojatoleslami,Leila; Bayat,Parvin-Dokht; Ghanbari,Ali.
In a sampled population of fall-prone elderly women, an exercise protocol was performed for 12 weeks on experimental group and at the end of exercise period, the strength and endurance of muscles and SF-6 Health Surveys were analyzed. Results showed that endurance and strength of muscles and also physical activity were improved in experimental group (P<0.05). Group exercise program causes improvement in both strength and endurance of muscles in fall-prone elderly women. The effect of group exercise program on women may be related to differences in central nervous system of this gender in comparison with men.

Tonic and reflex cardiovascular autonomic control in trained-female rats BJMBR
Sanches,I.C.; Sartori,M.; Jorge,L.; Irigoyen,M.C.; De Angelis,K..
The effects of exercise training on cardiovascular and autonomic functions were investigated in female rats. After an aerobic exercise training period (treadmill: 5 days/week for 8 weeks), conscious female Wistar (2 to 3 months) sedentary (S, N = 7) or trained rats (T, N = 7) were cannulated for direct arterial pressure (AP) recording in the non-ovulatory phases. Vagal (VT) and sympathetic tonus (ST) were evaluated by vagal (atropine) and sympathetic (propranolol) blockade. Baroreflex sensitivity was evaluated by the heart rate responses induced by AP changes. Cardiopulmonary reflex was measured by the bradycardic and hypotensive responses to serotonin. Resting bradycardia was observed in T (332 ± 7 bpm) compared with S animals (357 ± 10 bpm), whereas AP...
