Biotechnology's Potential Contribution to Global Wood Supply and Forest Conservation AgEcon
Sedjo, Roger A..
Over the past 30 years, industrial plantation forests have become a major supplier of industrial wood. There are several reasons for this, including the improved economics of planted forests due to biotechnological innovations, the increases in natural forest wood costs due to increasing inaccessibility, and rising wood costs from natural forests due to new environmental restrictions related to logging. Forestry today is on the threshold of the widespread introduction of biotechnology into its operational practices. In many cases, the biotechnology likely to be introduced is simply an extension of that being utilized in agriculture, such as herbicide-tolerant genes. However, biotechnology in forestry also is developing applications unique to forestry,...

Rodrigues,Daniela Junqueira; Budiño,Fábio Enrique Lemos; Prezzi,Joel Alberto; Monferdini,Renato Pacheco; Otsuk,Ivani Pozar; Moraes,José Evandro de.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of the prebiotic fructooligosaccharide and/or alfalfa hay to piglet diets on carcass traits and short-chain fatty acid profiles in the cecal digesta. Seventy-two commercial crossbred piglets of both sexes, with an average initial weight about 6 kg and age of approximately 21 days, were distributed in a randomized block design, using a factorial scheme, which consisted of three alfalfa hay levels (0, 5, and 10%) and two fructooligosaccharide levels (0 and 0.3%). Fiber addition in the presence of the prebiotic exerted an effect on cecal digesta short-chain fatty acid, increasing the acetic and reducing the butyric acid concentrations. The meat quality was also affected by the...

Characterization of açaí (E. oleracea) fruits and its processing residues BABT
Pessoa,José Dalton Cruz; Arduin,Marcos; Martins,Maria Alice; Carvalho,José Edmar Urano de.
The aim of this work was to study the source of the açaí residue for its possible commercial applications by characterizing the fruit (fresh and dry mass), and performing an anatomic study of the pericarp from which were identified the origin of the anthocyanins, and fatty acids, and fibers; also the vascular system, its fibers constituents and fibrils were characterized. It was concluded that anthocyanins were located on the epiderm and external parenchyma, and that solids retained on the sieve come from the sclerenchyma, and that the fatty acids come from the storage parenchyma. The vascular tissue was formed by the fibers around 20 mm length. The length distribution of the fibrils had a mean length of 580µm.

Zanuncio,Antônio José Vinha; Carvalho,Amélia Guimarães; Carneiro,Angélica de Cassia Oliveira; Valenzuela,Paulina; Gacitúa,William; Leite,Fernando Palha; Colodette,Jorge Luiz.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to test a new methodology to assess the resistance of trees to wind damage and determine the characteristics that increase clone resistance to winds. Tree resistance to breakage, basic density, ultrastructure, anatomy, mechanical properties, and wood growth stress have been evaluated in seven Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla clones, collected from a region with a high incidence of wind damage. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the tree resistance to breakage and the ratio between the area damaged by the winds and the total planted area was -0.839, showing the efficiency of the methodology adopted and that high breaking strength results in a smaller area affected by wind damage. Trees with a high...
