SIMPÓSIO SOBRE O CERRADO, 8.; INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON TROPICAL SAVANNAS, 1., 1996, Brasilia, DF.. |

The bromatological composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility of millet cultivars were assessed for different nitrogen doses and two sowing seasons in the Ceres municipality of Goiás state, Brazil. The treatments consisted of three millet cultivars (ADR-7010, ADR-500 and BRS-1501), four nitrogen (N) doses (0, 50, 100 and 200kg ha-1 of N) and two sowing seasons. Three replicates and a randomised block design with a 3 x 4 x 2 factorial scheme were used. Two cuttings were performed in each season when plants reached an average height of 0.70 cm. No significant interactions were observed between or among cultivars for N doses and dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) contents. The DM, CP, NDF... |

Technora fibres are high performance aramid fibres which have been used in ropes and protective clothing for many years. They are also now being proposed as geotextiles for soil reinforcement. However, there is a lack of experience on the long-term behaviour of Technora fibres in an alkaline environment (lime-treated ground.). Consequently, aging studies have been performed under different conditions (deionised water, pH9 and pH11). Hydrolytic degradation has been evaluated by FTIR, viscometry, TGA, density measurements, SEM, and by tensile measurements. Some chain degradation and finish rearrangements have been highlighted, but Technora fibres retain their mechanical properties for all the conditions considered here. |

Polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) fibres possess a higher initial stiffness than that of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibres and this makes them an attractive competitor for use in mooring ropes and other applications for which a low compliance would be an advantage. The two types of fibres have been characterised and compared in tension, creep and fatigue and found to behave in very similar ways. Failure of both fibres results in similar fracture morphologies although under high cyclic loading a new failure process has been observed for the PEN fibres which combines step by step crack propagation and final failure normal to the fibre axis. In the light of this observation, similar fracture behaviour has also been identified in PET fibres and which, until... |

Abstract Vasconcellea quercifolia A.St-Hil. (Caricaceae) is a non-conventional food plant (PANC) of Brazil. The aim of this study was to investigate the physical, chemical, and nutritional properties of green and ripe fruits and medullary parenchyma of V. quercifolia A.St-Hil., in order to develop functional foods. We determined humidity, pH, ash content, protein content, carbohydrate content, fibre content, carotenoid content, ascorbic acid content, and aminograms of green and ripe fruits and of medullary parenchyma from three specimens, following existing methodologies. Green fruits had higher protein and fibre contents, and ripe fruits had higher ash, carbohydrate, and carotenoid contents, higher than other most consumed fruits. On the other hand,... |
