Ecophysiological study was conducted on the japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) reared in Marennes-Oléron bay (France), during May 1992. Most of the somatic growth of the oyster occured during that month. The measurements were achieved from a removable laboratory stated in Le Chapus for 3 days at different tide level (coefficient of 49, 57, and 88). The food conditions were monitored through a computer with a continuous record of the turbidity during aIl the tidal cycle. In spite of an important variation between the food conditions in mean seston load, from 13,5 to 54,6 mg/!, the available organic matter ranged from 3 to 4,9 mg/l. The rate of organic matter in the water ranged 22 % to 9 %. The organic selection efficiency was significantly higher for the... |

Competition between organisms interfere in host and pathogen dynamics in ways that are difficult to predict. By one side, competitors can reduce the food supply and cause nutritional stress. Such stress could further modulate the susceptibility to infection by altering immune response or metabolic rate of the host. Alternatively, competitors may trap pathogens before they reach the focal host, and therefore reduce, enhance, or have no effect on infection according to the competitor's susceptibility to the infection. To better understand how competition influences host and pathogen interactions, we experimentally assessed the relative importance of competition for pathogens and resources on the severity of a viral disease infecting the Pacific oyster... |

An affordable potable water treatment unit was designed and constructed. The components were coagulation unit, sedimentation unit, slow sand filter unit, utraviolet unit and the storage unit. Filtrate from the chamber was compared with International acceptable standards. The result showed that the treatment chamber proved effective and can produce at least 100 litres of portable water per day. The physical and chemical parameters monitored were reduced to the acceptable limit by WHO (World Health Organisation), NAFDAC(National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control) Nigeria and Nigerian Standard for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ). However, coliform was not totally removed but the count was reduced by 99.4%. |

The study of maturation and spawning of the oyster is part of a research program to investigate the summer mortalities of the oysters, Crassostrea gigas in Marennes-Oléron Bay. Four maturity stages were simultaneously obtained by diet and thermal conditioning (immature, low maturation, mature and post-spawning stages). Measurements of clearance, filtration, absorption and respiration rates allowed a calculation of the scope for growth and hence an estimation of the oyster's energetic budget at various maturity stages. Male and female oysters had similar physiological responses. The filtration rate ranged from 2.4 to 2.6 1.h(-1) at the early stages of maturation and decreased to 1.8 1.h.' during the maturity stage. Growth rate resulting from gonad... |

Introducing new species for shellfish farming is essential for expanding farmers' markets and for minimising the pathological risks that endangers professional marine aquaculture activities, which traditionally rely on only one species. Ifremer's Aquaculture and Pathological Genetics (GAP) laboratory participates in the mollusc genetics network (REGEMO). Since 1989, this network has been carrying out a selection programme for resistance or tolerance to Bonamia ostreae in European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) to revitalize cultivation of this species on a national level. |

The use of water containing suspended sediments causes serious problems to irrigation systems. Choosing the right filtering system type and capacity is essential to avoid increases in operational and maintenance costs of irrigation resulting from the need for cleaning and frequent component replacing. Pre-filters, such as the hydrocyclone, are important for their significant capability of retaining particles suspended in the water. Data on hydrocyclones performance for pre-filtering of irrigation water can be found in the literature, but research data in Brazil are scarce. Therefore, four Rietema type hydrocyclones (50 mm diameter) were constructed, one with circular-end and the other three presenting rectangular-end feeding tubes. The evaluation of... |
