We assessed the effect of stocking density on physiological parameters (blood lactate, glucose, cortisol, hematocrit), water quality (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, unionized ammonia, carbon dioxide), and survival during the transportation of fingerling (24.5 ± 4.7 g) and juvenile (615.8 ± 122.2 g) pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) for six hours in plastic bags. The tested densities were 65, 80, 95, 110 and 125 g L-1 for fingerlings, and 50, 80, 110, 140 and 170 g L-1 for juveniles (three replicates each). Parameters were measured prior to and immediately after transportation, and at 24 and 96 hours recovery after transportation. This study simulated acidic habitat for different life stages of Clarias gariepinus to know the effect on survival, mortality, morphology and behaviour. The fish were exposed to pHs 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8.01 (control) for 35 days. 100% mortality was recorded for all the life stages in pH 3, and 80, 62 and 36% of mortality of fingerlings, juveniles and adults respectively were recorded in pH 4. In pH 5, 30, 26 and 12% mortalities of fingerlings, juveniles and adults respectively were recorded and at pH 6 mortalities of fingerlings, juveniles and adults were 12, 10 and 4% respectively. This research evaluated the influence of yeast and zinc on growth performance and metabolic responses of Nile tilapia. Diets were formulated to contain 32.0% digestible protein and 3,240 kcal DE/kg diet and the following autolized yeast (%):zinc (mg/kg)relationships: 0.0:0.0; 0.0:79.5; 2.0:0.0; 0.795:79.5; 2.0:200; 4.0:400; 6.0:600; 12.0:1,200 and 14.0:1,400. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of water pH on survival and Na+ and K+ body levels of fingerlings of Rhamdia quelen, a freshwater catfish. Survival was 100% at pH 4.00 to 9.0 throughout the experiment (96h), and death of all fingerlings was observed only at pH 3.75 or lower and at pH 10.50. There was a significant correlation between water pH and body Na+ levels (but not K+ levels) 72h after transfer. There was a clear reduction in Na+ levels when the transfer was to pH outside the 5.0 - 9.0 range, which is in agreement with the fact that fishes exposed to such pHs present loss of ions by diffusion and/or a decrease in absorption. Centropomidae and Serranidae, sometimes collectively misnamed "sea basses", are suitable for aquaculture in pens, ponds, and raceways around the tropical and subtropical latitudes of the world. Western Atlantic Ocean species were recently considered for farming. South Florida, Mexico, Central and South America and the Antilles areas of the Caribbean Basin have extensive areas suitable for farming groupers and snook. Principal species of interest are the common snook (Centropomus undecimalis ), the fat snook (C. parallelus ), the Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus ), Black seabass (Centropristis striatus ), Gag (Mycteroperca microlepis ), and jewfish (E. itajara ). |

Lates calcarifer is distributed widely in northern Australia and is important to both commercial and recreational fisheries. There is the research on hatchery production of the species in 1984 and this work is continuing. Hatchery reared fish have been stocked to reservoirs in northern Queensland and have been used in experimental grow-out trials. Fish weaned onto formulated diets by the age of 25 days were reared to marketable size (> 500 g) in freshwater tanks. Despite suboptimal water temperatures the fish reached market size by the age of twelve months. Taste panel analysis showed that the pellet fed fish were of good quality. The sensitivity of growth rates to water temperature was demonstrated in both grow-out trials and reservoir stockings. |
