Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi represents nowadays the main fishery resource of the Argentine Sea, in spite of the fact that the percentage of captures related to total fishery production has fallen down 30% in the last decade. The abundance and distribution of hake eggs and larvae in an intense spawning area in front of Isla Escondida (Chubut province), are analyzed. This phenomena was studied from a comparative-historical point of view allowing to apppreciate the evolution of a resource at present undergoing an overfishing pressure, capable of pushing it to collapse. Since 1973 maximum egg densities diminished and, if total egg production is considered a reliable index for recruitment prediction, no signs of overcoming stocks can be seen. On the other... |

One of the problems concerning studies of fish egg distribution is the weak spatial and temporal resolution due to the workload that examination of a large number of samples would demand. Recently, the development of a new laboratory imaging system, the ZooScan, capable of obtaining relatively good resolution images enables automated zooplankton identification using supervised learning algorithms. This new approach was applied to formalin-fixed fish egg samples collected during French winter IBTS (International Bottom Trawl Surveys) in the Eastern English Channel and the Southern North Sea. Fish egg spatial distributions of seven species based on the microscope and ZooScan identifications were compared. Abundance and distribution maps of winter-spawning... |

In spite of its aquaculture potential, the larval rearing of greasy grouper (<i>Epinephelus tauvina</i>) remains problematic and is not yet commercially feasible. The low and unpredictable larval survival is due to difficulties encountered in spawning the broodstock, the small size of the larvae at first feeding, and the high sensitivity of the larvae until day 45. The nutritional requirements for the broodstock as well as for the young larvae are still enigmatical. In this presentation the impact of supplementing the highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), eicosapentaenoic (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to the broodstock and larval diets is illustrated. |

Cannibalism is not an abnormal behaviour and it can be observed in a wide number of animals. In Pisces, cannibalism may be the result of endogenous intraspecific factors (nutritional state, size, age, state of development) or exogenous intraspecific factors (food, density, light). Nevertheless, external fertilization and the high fecundity of teleost fish tend to increase egg cannibalism, in particular among filter feeding fishes such as anchovies. In the present work, two important Argentine anchovy Engraulis anchoita stocks were studied. The first is to the north of 41°S, and spawns during spring on the coastal and shelf waters of Buenos Aires Province,Argentina, and Uruguay. The second one inhabits the Patagonian region, from 41°S to 47°S. It spawns... |

A bongo sampler fifted with nets of two different mesh sizes, 330 and 505 u. was used to collected 137 ichthyoplankton samples in the coastal areas off Buenos Aires Province in October, 1981. The efficiency of the two meshes for catching anchovy eggs and larvae and total ichthyoplankton was examined. The statistical analysis of the samples shows that there are no significant differences between the numbers of anchovy and total eggs collected by the different meshes. As regards anchovy and total larvae the finer mesh showed as significantly higher catching efficiency. The results of this partial estimate do not suggest that a major revision of the total assessment of the complete stock is necessary. |

The first results in the development of a standardized methodology to estimate Mnemiopsis leidyi intake rates and their impact on fish recruitment are presented. M. leidyi capability to consume lyophilized fish eggs and level of consumption of such type of preys, Artemia nauplii and rotifera were assessed. Although M. leidyi can consume lyophilized fish eggs, intake rates were extremely low, often null and in all cases lower than those estimated for the other types of preys offered. The increase of feeding rate on each prey was proportional to ctenophores size growth. The results observed suggest that consumption of fish eggs would not affect recruitment. However, there is not a uniform methodology in the literature that allows for standardized... |
