A comparative study on the feeding habits of Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus) in Nyanza Gulf Lake Victoria and sewage fish ponds OceanDocs
Getabu, A..
Gut content analysis of Oreochromis niloticus from the Nyanza Gulf, Lake Victoria showed that the bulk of the food items ingested constituted bottom deposits and blue green algae. Among the live food items ingested, blue green algae (Cyanophyceae) constituted 53.6%, the diatoms (Bacillariophyaceae) 19.7%, aquatic invertebrates (mainly Copepoda, Cladocera, and Rotifera) 12.9%, desmids (Desmidaceae) 7.7% and lastly the green algae (Chlorophyceae) 6.2%. The most preferred food items were: Spirulina laxisma and Nitzschia accicularis. The least preferred food items were: Lyngbya circumcreta, Microcystis aeruginosa and Pediastrum simplex. Resumo: Durante os últimos anos tem-se disseminado o uso de aplicações de grandes quantidades de calcário agrícola (CaCO3), entre 1.000 a 2.000 kg/ha, em viveiros de aquicultura na Ásia e em outros países, como no Brasil. A hipótese que justificaria esta prática seria que a adição de altas doses de calcário provocaria a precipitação do fitoplâncton, a sedimentação das partículas de argila em suspensão e a melhoria da qualidade da água dos viveiros poucos dias após a aplicação, porém não há estudos que comprovem sua eficiência. Effect of size grading on the growth of pirarucu Arapaima gigas reared in earthen ponds. Repositório Alice

Size grading is a common management practice in fish farming to minimize growth variability. Such practice has not been established for pirarucu Arapaima gigas. Therefore, the present study assessed the effect of size grading on the growth of pirarucu. Juvenile pirarucu were divided into three groups: ungraded fish (U: mean initial weight 1.12 kg), small fish (S: mean initial weight 0.81 kg), and large fish (L: mean initial weight 1.36 kg), and reared for 129 days (phase I) and 158 additional days (phase II), consecutively. Barley straw has received, recently, considerable attention as an algicide, which could be used to control algal growth in fishponds. It is regarded as cost-effective, user friendly and environmentally sounds. On the other hand, the submerged wetland macrophytes are crucial for the stabilization of clear water state in shallow lakes, by their active production of anti-algal compounds (allelochemicals) through allelopathy. Isolement et identification de vibrions halophiles d'une station experimentale de mariculture ArchiMer

110 Vibrio strains were isolated, at various times of the year, from samples of sea-water supply, breeding-tank water and discarded fish used as food at the breeding stations. From the results obtained by the biochemical and cultural tests, it was possible to identify most of the isolated strains as Vibrio anguillarum . Strains with intermediate characteristics, above-all positive saccharose, proved to be numerous. The authors discuss the occurrence, in particular environments such as those being studied, of atypical or intermediate vibrio strains which are difficult to classify.

Pond bottom dryout, liming. Part I. Disinfection in semi-intensive shrimp ponds. Repositório Alice

Abstract: The main pond bottom soil management practices used in semi-intensive culture are pond dryout and liming between crops. These practices accelerate organic matter decomposition, neutralize soil acidity and destroy unwanted organisms. Since most soils become too dry for microbial decomposition of organic matter within three weeks, there is little need to dry pond bottoms more than that period. Where bottom sediment is deep, remove it to facilitate dryout. Ponds with soil pHs below 7.5 should be limed to enhance decomposition.

Abstract: The autors believe that dryout periods likely destroy most organisms in pond bettons, and liming of the entire botton area shoud be done only to neutralize soil acidity and increase pH for organic matter decomposition by soil microorganisms. Use of hydrated lime for disinfection should be reserved to particularly wet parts of pond bottons. When applying liming materials, it is important to spread them uniformly over moist soil - typically within two days after ponds are drained to assure dissolution.

Coordinated ECOTRON Program on the Arcachon Basin (Aquitaine, France) : Control of marine biological production in a man-modified lagoon ecosystem (fish ponds). Results, synthesis and prospects. The "fish reservoirs" of the Arcachon Basin consist of eutrophic lagoon ecosys­tems, empirically exploited for extensive amphihaline fish culture (grey mullets, sea bass, eels, sea breams). Oreochromis niloticus nourri avec l'aliment Ivograin et élevé en étangs alimentés par l'eau de la rivière Doupoh est caractérisé par une odeur de poisson, un aspect blanchâtre, une texture ferme, juteuse, huileuse et collante. Le goût est doux et caractéristique du goût de poisson. La texture dans la bouche du poisson est juteuse, ferme, huileuse et collante. L'échantillon de la population locale utilisé pour le test juge la qualité organoleptique du poisson cuit sans assaisonnement acceptable. Le site de l'étude est donc propice à la pratique de la pisciculture intensive. Cette méthode d'évaluation a déjà été utilisée par Koumi et al. (2009).

Reproduction et fécondité du mâchoiron Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus en élévage OceanDocs

Différentes structures d'élevage (bassin en béton, enclos et étangs) ont été testées pour leurs convenance comme structures de ponte. Les bassins en béton et les petits enclos en lagune ont donné les meilleurs résultats quant au nombre de pontes obtenues. Des trois types de réceptacles de pontes testés, les réceptacles avec une petite ouverture (150mm de diamètre) à l'une des deux extrémités ont été préférentiellement utilisés par les poissons. Les géniteurs de C. nigroditatus, une fois matures entrent spontanément dans les réceptacles de ponte pour déposer leurs œufs sans intervention externe humaine.
