5S rDNA characterization in twelve Sciaenidae fish species (Teleostei, Perciformes): depicting gene diversity and molecular markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Alves-Costa,Fernanda A.; Martins,Cesar; Matos,Fernanda Del Campos de; Foresti,Fausto; Oliveira,Claudio; Wasko,Adriane P..
In order to extend the genetic data on the Sciaenidae fish family, the present study had the purpose to characterize PCR-generated 5S rDNA repeats of twelve species of this group through PAGE (Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis) analysis. The results showed the occurrence of at least two different 5S rDNA size classes in all the species. Moreover, 5S rDNA repeats of one of the studied species - Isopisthus parvipinnis - were cloned and subjected to nucleotide sequencing and Southern blot membrane hybridization analyses, which permitted to confirm the existence of two major 5S rDNA classes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the nucleotide sequences of different 5S rDNA repeats of I. parvipinnis lead to their separation into two major clusters. These results may...

A description of mercury in fishes from the Madeira River Basin, Amazon, Brazil Acta Amazonica
Bastos,Wanderley Rodrigues; Rebelo,Mauro de Freitas; Fonseca,Márlon de Freitas; Almeida,Ronaldo de; Malm,Olaf.
Over the last 20 years several projects carried on the Madeira River basin in the Amazon produced a great amount data on total Hg concentration in different fish species. In this paper we discuss temporal trends in Hg contamination and its relation to body weight in some of those fishes, showing that even within similar groups, such as carnivorous and non-migratory fish, the interspecies variability in Hg accumulation is considerable.

A multibiomarker approach on the Atlantic tomcod (Microgadus tomcod) in the St. Lawrence Estuary ArchiMer
Dupuy, Celie; Couillard, Catherine M.; Laroche, Jean; Nellis, Pierre; Brousseau, Pauline; Fournier, Michel.
A multibiomarker approach was developed on juvenile Atlantic tomcod (Microgadus tomcod) to evaluate the pertinence of this approach for low-cost screening assessment of the environmental quality of various coastal sites within estuaries. Several biometric indices and biomarkers (ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity, metallothionein concentration, and immune responses) were investigated on immature and maturing tomcods (a parts per thousand currency sign31 months) collected in four environmentally contrasted sites in the St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE). Simultaneous examination of various age classes provides the opportunity to detect short-term responses in sensitive young-of-the-year fish (e.g., EROD induction) and longer-time effects associated with...

A polygenic hypothesis for sex determination in the European sea bass - Dicentrarchus labrax ArchiMer
Vandeputte, Marc; Dupont Nivet, M; Chavanne, H; Chatain, Beatrice.
Polygenic sex determination, although suspected in several species, is thought to be evolutionarily unstable and has been proven in very few cases. In the European sea bass, temperature is known to influence the sex ratio. We set up a factorial mating, producing 5.893 individuals from 253 full-sib families, all reared in a single batch to avoid any between-families environmental effects. The proportion of females in the offspring was 18.3%, with a large variation between families. Interpreting sex as a threshold trait, the heritability estimate was 0.62 +/- 0.12. The observed distribution of family sex ratios was in accordance with a polygenic model or with a four-sex-factors system with environmental variance and could not be explained by any genetic...

A step toward the definition of ecological indicators of the impact of fishing on the fish assemblage of the Abore reef reserve (New Caledonia) ArchiMer
Amand, Marion; Pelletier, Dominique; Ferrari, Jocelyne; Kulbicki, Michel.
Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are often contemplated as a tool for the sustainable management of exploited resources and ecosystem conservation. This paper proposes an approach to establish a statistical diagnostic of the effects of MPAs on fish assemblages, and define corresponding ecological indicators. This requires choosing relevant variables (abundance, diversity, demographic parameters..) and appropriate statistical methods. The study was based on data from the Abore reef Reserve in New Caledonia. Two sets of methods: 1-inferential linear models (ANOVA, GLM): 2- Partial Least Squares (PLS) methods of regression, were used to test the effects of this MPA. PLS enabled us to test simultaneously within a model, density, species richness, biomass and mean...

ALMEIDA, H. C. G.; MACIEL, E. da S.; QUARESMA, F. R. P.; FREITAS, A. A..
In Brazil, due to economic and social factors, public policies are needed to grant access to quality nutrition in school. This provision should respect the local food culture; however, in the North, the region with the highest production of inland fisheries, fish consumption among students is still very low. The aim of the present study is to characterize Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) MSM, suggest planned school dishes based on this MSM and assesses their acceptability among students at the elementary and high school levels in northern Brazil. The study was carried out over one month and was a quantitative (hedonic scale and leftover/intake index) and qualitative research about preference. The participants were 120 elementary- and high-school students...

Acceptance of fish hamburgers in school meals in the Southwest Region of Paraná, Brazil Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
BREDA,Leandra Schuastz; BELUSSO,Anne Caroline; NOGUEIRA,Barbara Arruda; CAMARGO,Guilherme Holub; MITTERER-DALTOÉ,Marina Leite.
Abstract The regular consumption of fish provides health gains for people, and its introduction in school meals is an important strategy to insert the habit of consuming this food by a population. Thus the objective of this study was to verify the acceptance of fish, presented in the form of hamburger, by children in municipal primary schools in the town of Pato Branco, Brazil, in which the school cooks had been trained to produce fish hamburgers. Acceptance was evaluated using a hedonic scale with 5 facial classifications (1 = disliked extremely to 5 = liked extremely). Students of both genders from 5 to 10 years of age (n = 142) were served the hamburgers for their midday meal, representing the protein portion of the meal. The results were analyzed by...

Acclimation of juvenile Mugil liza Valenciennes, 1836 (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) to different environmental salinities Neotropical Ichthyology
Lisboa,Viviana; Barcarolli,Indianara F.; Sampaio,Luís A.; Bianchini,Adalto.
Survival and physiological parameters associated with metabolism and osmoregulation were evaluated in juveniles of the Lebranche mullet Mugil liza acclimated to different water salinities (5, 10, 20, 30, and 40‰) for 15 days. Room temperature (25ºC) and photoperiod (12L:12D) were fixed. Fish were fed twice-a-day with commercial diet (28% crude protein) until satiation. After acclimation, whole body oxygen consumption was measured and fish were euthanized and sampled for blood, gills, and liver. Whole body oxygen consumption and plasma osmolality did not change in the range of salinities tested. The isosmotic point was estimated as 412.7 mOsmol kg-1 (13.5‰). Gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity tended to be lower at 20 and 30‰, while liver glycogen content was...

CHALUPE, V. C.; QUEIROZ, S. C. do N. de; FERRACINI, V. L.; MELLO, M. A. M. M. e; JONSSON, C. M..

Deltamethrin (DM) is a synthetic pyrethroid pesticide highly toxic to aquatic organisms. Because of its lipophilic feature it can be highly absorbed by the fish gills, which partially explains the high sensitivity of these animals to DM exposure in concentrations up to a thousand times lower than in mammals. This study compared clinical, biochemical and haematological observations between DM intoxicated and nonintoxicated fish. The experiment involved five exposure conditions (control and four concentrations of DM) and was executed in triplicates with 4 animals per set (n=60). The first behavior changes represented by rapid operculum movement and irregular or on the surface swimming were observed shortly after exposure to the concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and...
