The eastern Baltic cod stock collapsed as a consequence of climate-driven adverse hydrographic conditions and over fishing and has remained at historically low levels. Spatio-temporal fishing closures [Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)] have been implemented since 1995, to protect and restore the spawning stock. However, no signs of recovery have been observed yet, either suggesting that MPAs are an inappropriate management measure or pointing towards suboptimal closure design. We used the spatially explicit fishery simulation model ISIS-Fish to evaluate proposed and implemented fishery closures, combining an age-structured population module with a multifleet exploitation module and a management module in a single model environment. The model is parameterized... |

Quota allocation mechanisms have distributional effects that are highly relevant to the economic organization of fisheries. In France, where fishing allocations are non-transferable, quotas are shared among Producer Organizations (POs) based on the historical landings of their members. Each PO is then responsible for implementing their own internal rules that provide individual or collective allocations to their members. This study investigates the distributional effects of the various quota management systems adopted by POs on quotas and production for the Bay of Biscay sole fishery. A comparison between initial allocations by vessel based on historical landings and actual observed landings is presented. Inequality metrics are used to quantify... |

Sequential population analysis on Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus)from the Southwest Atlantic. Years 1985-1995. VPA on the Long Tail Hake (Macruronus magellanicus), based on data covering the years 1985 up to 1995, was performed to assess the current state of the stock. Simulation trials, inducing uncertainty about both the natural mortality rate and recruitment were also accomplished, to evaluate the risk of overfishing which is associated to different fishing alternatives, always under the assumption of a single and closed Long Tail Hake population. CPUE data were not appropriate for tunning, so the traditional VPA has been applied. During the period of study, stock biomass and spawning stock biomass showed an increased trend. Long and short-term... |

Introduction: Setting up a policy of coastal fisheries management goes through a preliminary stage of understanding the dynamics of the fishing fleets as much as their tactics. Small fleets, such as those of the Côtes d'Armor, are characterised by: - the boats' home ports are scattered widely, - the heterogeneousness of the types of vessels and fishing gear used, - the versatility of the fishing units, - the plurispecificity of the exploited resource, - the flexibility of operating strategies, that is, the fishing owners' ability to change occupation. However, this flexibility is limited by the availability of the resource, by the market, by the investments granted (boats, fishing materiel), as well as by "cultural" context and know-how. This... |

Strengthening tuna management is one of the primary tasks for the new Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). Stock assessment and the prediction of the dynamics of the tuna resources will become increasingly important research topics because they provide the basic information for the management decision process. Under these circumstances, this paper attempts to develop the stock analyses and prediction techniques using neural networks. As a first step and as a test study, analyses and predictions of catch rates of the Japanese yellowfin tuna longline fisheries are attempted. |

Commonly adopted approaches to managing small-scale fisheries (SSFs) in developing countries do not ensure sustainability. Progress is impeded by a gap between innovative SSF research and slower-moving SSF management. The paper aims to bridge the gap by showing that the three primary bases of SSF management--ecosystem, stakeholders’ rights and resilience--are mutually consistent and complementary. It nominates the ecosystem approach as an appropriate starting point because it is established in national and international law and policy. Within this approach, the emerging resilience perspective and associated concepts of adaptive management and institutional learning can move management beyond traditional control and resource-use optimization, which largely... |
