Meillat, Marc.
IFREMER's "Fishing Technology" team participated in the JUVESU99 campaign from 1 to 13 September. The equipment tested was the same as that from the SURFET99 campaign, a pelagic trawl with a surface area of 47.75 x 43.75 with netting of 500 metres of cables, 120-metre arms of equal length above and below, and a ballast of 40 kg to each wing tip The pelagic panels used were panels from the company TYBORON of "type 8" lent through the intermediary of the Kéroman company, Dock et Entrepôts Maritimes. The trawl's collection of balls consisted of a cluster of ten 11-litre balls on each upper wing tip, and a cluster of five 11-litre balls on each side of the square. The total collection of balls was therefore thirty 11-litre balls along the back rope of the...

Tuna world fisheries yield 3 million tons per year; the increase rate of whole production is constant and sustained since 30 years. This original figure for marine fisheries is due to enlargement of tuna fleets and fishing grounds over all the world ocean, the continuous increase of tuna fishing power by in board equipment and remote sensing equipment for searching and scouting (on board, aircraft, satellite, telecommunication_). During the last 20 years, the log-associated tuna fishing has contributed to the local individual and tuna fleets efficiency and fishing power either for large industrial tuna seiners by radio-equipped buoys on natural (debris) or artificial man-made logs. The same trend is noted for numerous artisanal tuna and large pelagic...

Fisheries and artisanal fishers on the Brazilian Amazon Coastline: the cases of Bragança and Augusto Corrêa ExtensaoRural
Sales, Abner Dias; Almeida, Oriana Trindade de; Brabo, Marcos Ferreira; Silva Junior, Bruno Ribeiro da.
Artisanal fishing on the coast of Pará is so important for local development that it ends up being the main source of food and/or income for riverside communities. This work aims to investigate the artisanal fishing activity in the municipalities of Bragança and Augusto Corrêa (Pará) and to understand the strategies that these fishermen use to maintain this activity in their communities. The study used a database containing 1,145 interviews of two important categories of artisanal fishermen in 37 fishing communities in the region, fish and crustacean fishermen. In all categories, low education prevailed and not every fisherman had a vessel to carry out the work activity, which promoted a form of partnership with boat owners. There is a diversity of species...

Guam Fish Aggregating Device programme ArchiMer
Torres, A.
Installation and maintenance of FADs by the Government of Guam began in 1979, initially with funding from the Salstonstall-Kennedy Act through the Pacific Tuna Development Foundation. Current funding for the Guam FAD project is provided through the Dingell-Johnson/Wallop-Breaux Sport Fish Restoration programme, a Federal Aid Project funded by taxes collected on the purchase of fishing equipment and motorboat fuels nationwide. There are now sixteen operational FAD sites in Guam's waters. At a cost of approximately US$10,000 per system, concern for the rising costs of replacing and maintaining FAD systems has prompted the Department of Agriculture's Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (DAWR) to investigate alternative FAD maintenance strategies and...

Portier, Marcel.
Following the trials conducted in 1958/59 by German trawlers, the I.S.T.P.M. tested for the first time, in 1960, on the Roselys, a 120 CV oceanographic research vessel, a pelagic trawl using a boat equipped with a headrope sounder. The trawl was a double panel trawl with an opening perimeter of 500 80 mm meshes. The lateral opening was made through hydrodynamic Süberkrüb doors of 1,7 sq. meters and 130 kg. Finally, an Atlas Werke netzsonde whose oscillator was set on a platform towed behind a headrope, was transmitting information about the opening and sinkage depth of the trawl to the bridge. The cable only had one conductor and the answer was transmitted through the water. Since then, new cables with two coaxial conductors have been used and results are...

Vacherot, Jean-philippe; Bavouzet, Gerard.
The new ORHAGO campaigns, which aim to form a multi-year series of biological and ecological data, are relying on the use of twin trawls associated with a new type of rigging. The ORHAGO1 campaign should make it possible to make adjustments of the diverse elements of the fishing train in order to obtain an optimal configuration. This preliminary adjustment is indispensable for obtaining reliable data during ORHAGO campaigns. In order to do this, twin trawls of 25.15 metres, belonging to TMSI, were used jointly with the ship's panels (Morgère WS) and a clump specially developed for the occasion with the Morgère Company. In order to verify the correct behaviour of the device, the Scanmar setup monitoring system as well as Micrel tension and inclinometric...

Davigo, Erwan; Bavouzet, Gerard.
3D modelling of the fishing gear flume tank at IFREMER's Lorient site Within the framework of their training, it is suggested that students in their first year of the "Industrial Product Design" BTS (vocational training certificate) at the Colbert de Lorent school participate in an internship in order to put into practice their acquired skills and to familiarise themselves with the work environment. Erwan Davigo did his internship at IFREMER's Lorient station, in the Fishing Technology department, from 18 May 1998 to 26 June 1998 (placement supervisor: Gérard Bavouzet). The study topic focuses on modelling the Lorient station's test basin in three dimensions, thus making it possible to complete the documentation base. IFREMER is presented in its entirety...

Meillat, Marc.
Following a mission made by J.P. George on board trawls testing tunny fishing by using a pelagic "boeuf" trawl in September 1987 (because these tests were very promising), IFREMER became interested in designing a trawl more adapted to this type of fishing, known as surface fishing, it was therefore decided to create a mock-up to scale of the trawl that folds down from the bottom.

OCCUPATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS, TECHNOLOGY USE AND OUTPUT DETERMINANTS AMONG FISHERFOLKS IN OGUN WATERSIDE AREA, OGUN STATE AgEcon
Olubanjo, O.O.; Akinleye, S.O.; Balogun, A.M..
This study examines the occupational characteristics and technology options of capture fisheries in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State. Data were collected from respondents selected randomly from four fishing communities in the local government using questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Most of the respondents are male, aged above 30 and had minimal education. Lagoon fishing is the most common and there was an inverse relationship between fishing water distance and frequency of fisher folk plying the route. Non-motorized fishing technologies were used by most of the respondents. The significant variables in the regression analyses are fixed production costs and high sea fishing. Recommendations centered on...

OceanDocs
Martini, L..
Fishing activities with trawl nets used by the commercial fleet in the continental slope of the Southwest Atlantic are quite different from those developed in the Argentine shelf because, in the former, depths are very variable and slopes are more marked: therefore, fishing procedures are quite different. In this work, the most important differences are described: fish species, fishing gear, type of vessel and machinery on deck, as well as the training and experience of skippers.
