ABSTRACT: Several microalgae contain in excess of 50 % crude protein with amino acid profile comparable to that of fish meal. In addition, high polyunsaturated fatty acid contents encourage their use in animal feeding and nutrition, particularly in the formulation and processing of aquafeeds. This study aims at estimating the feasibility of Chlorella meal as feed ingredient for the feeding and nutrition of farmed tilapia based upon digestibility data. Effect of dietary amino acid composition from proteins alternative to fishmeal on the growth of juveniles of the common snook, Centropomus undecimalis R. Bras. Zootec.

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effect of dietary amino acid composition from proteins alternative to fishmeal on the growth performance of the common snook, Centropomus undecimalis. Fish of 10.79±0.71 g (n = 150) were stocked in 15 shaded outdoor tanks of 1 m3. The basal diet contained 643.4 g kg−1 salmon byproduct meal (SML) and 200.0 g kg−1 soy protein concentrate (SPC). Two other diets replaced 39 and 29% of the SML with poultry byproduct meal (PBM, 170.1 g kg−1) and SPC (334.9 g kg−1), respectively. Fish were fed twice daily for 84 days under 32±1 g L−1 water salinity and 27.3±0.9 °C temperature. Final survival (99.5±2.6%) was unaffected by dietary treatment. Modeling the global fishmeal and fish oil markets ArchiMer

P>To explore the drivers of change in the complex system relating small pelagic fisheries and fishmeal/fish oil markets, to identify the interactions between these drivers and their overall impacts, we propose a bio-economic model, coupling the ecological and the economic dynamics of these global commodities. The model enables an analysis of the consequences of both global and local changes in the environment of production systems. Through sensitivity analysis of specific input parameters, we evaluate the robustness of the overall system to such changes and show that local responses of production systems and markets cannot be considered in isolation from the set of interactions at global level.

Substitutability of Fishmeal in Diets for Salmon and Trout: A Meta-Analysis AgEcon

Intensive aquaculture, especially the production of carnivorous species, requires artificial feeding. Fishmeal and oil are preferred to vegetable proteins, since marine proteins provide the essential nutrients required by farmed fish. Therefore, given the stagnant production of reduction species and the rapid increase in aquaculture production, fishmeal availability would pose a biological constraint on aquaculture contribution to world fish supplies in the future, unless alternative feed sources can be incorporated in diets. In this paper, the technical substitutability between fish and vegetable based feeds are assessed through the estimation of Morishima elasticities of substitution. These are derived from a meta-analysis production function.

Usefulness of near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy and chemometrics to discriminate between fishmeal, meat meal and soya meal samples Ciencia e Investigación Agraria

Near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy was used in combination with chemometrics to discriminate between fishmeal, meat meal and soya meal samples. Samples were obtained from commercial feed miles and scanned in the NIR region (1100 - 2500 nm) in a monochromatic instrument in reflectance mode. Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis were used to classify samples based on their NIR spectra. Full cross-validation was used in the development of classification models. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) correctly classified 85.7% of the fishmeal samples and 100% of the meat meal and soya meal samples.
