Flax/PP manufacture by automated fibre placement (AFP) ArchiMer
Baley, Christophe; Kervoelen, Antoine; Lan, Marine; Cartie, Denis; Le Duigou, Antoine; Bourmaud, Alain; Davies, Peter.
Automated fibre placement (AFP) has been used to manufacture flax/polypropylene biocomposites for the first time. This required preparation of tape with a calibrated width from impregnated fibre sheets. The unidirectional tapes showed polymer-rich zones on the surface. During manufacture the polypropylene (PP) is melted locally with a laser. A consolidation step in a hot press is then required to reduce void content. The flax fibres, composed of polysaccharides, have limited thermal resistance so optimization of the thermal cycle is necessary, but subsequent characterization of mechanical behaviour showed no evidence of property loss in spite of an additional melting cycle. AFP appears to be a promising manufacturing method for biocomposites.

IMPACT OF FOLIAR APPLICATION OF ASCORBIC ACID AND α-TOCOPHEROL ON ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND SOME BIOCHEMICAL ASPECTS OF FLAX CULTIVARS UNDER SALINITY STRESS Acta biol.Colomb.
EL-BASSIOUNY,Hala M.S; SADAK,Mervat Sh.
The interactive effects of saline water (2000, 4000 and 6000 mg/l) and foliar application of 400 mg/l of ascorbic acid (Asc) or α- tocopherol (α-Toco) on three flax cultivars (Sakha 3, Giza 8 and Ariane) were conducted during two successive seasons 2011/2012 and 2012/2013. The results showed that total soluble carbohydrates, free amino acids and proline contents were significantly increased with increasing salinity levels in the all three tested cultivars except free amino acid content of Giza 8 which showed insignificant decrease. While, nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) showed significant decreases compared with the corresponding control. Moreover, applications of vitamins (Asc or α-Toco) as foliar spraying increased all mentioned contents compared to the...

Recommended flax fibre density values for composite property predictions ArchiMer
Le Gall, Maelenn; Davies, Peter; Martin, Nicolas; Baley, Christophe.
Density is one of the fundamental properties of fibres which reinforce polymer matrix composites, and is used both to estimate composite weight and to evaluate fibre content for property predictions. For traditional composites, reinforced by glass or carbon fibres, unique density values are well known for a particular fibre grade and provide reliable fibre content estimations and composite property predictions. However, this is not the case for natural fibres. This paper first reviews published density values for flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) fibres and describes the limitations of techniques used to measure fibre density. Significant variations in published densities are found, which can be related to the measurement method. New data quantify the...

Species Diversity and Community Structure of Arthropod Pests and Predators in Flax, Linum Usitatissimum L. from Darjeeling (India) BABT
Pal,Suprakash; Mandal,Rupsanatan; Sarkar,Indrajit; Ghimiray,Tulsi Saran; Sharma,Binay Raj; Roy,Ayon; Roy,Suvendu Kumar; Chakraboorty,Gautam; Mitra,Sabyasachi.
ABSTRACT The species richness and relative abundances of different aboveground plant-dwelling pest and predator species were assessed in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) ecosystem under mid-hill conditions of eastern Himalayas. The experiment was conducted in winter seasons during 2004-2013 at the Regional Research Station (Hill Zone), Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalimpong, West Bengal, India. Twenty five species of phytophagous arthropods under 13 families were observed belonging to 6 different orders. The gram pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera), aphid, Myzus persicae (Aphididae: Hemiptera), shield bug, Plautia fimbriata (Pentatomidae: Hemiptera) and leaf webber, Nacoleia sp. (Pyralidae: Lepidoptera) were found as the most common...

Transverse tensile behaviour of unidirectional plies reinforced with flax fibres ArchiMer
Baley, C; Perrot, Yves; Busnel, F; Guezenoc, H; Davies, Peter.
Flax provides a renewable source of fibres with good mechanical properties, which justifies its use as a reinforcement for polymers. Composite materials made with flax which has only undergone mechanical treatments (stripping followed by combing) results in the presence of bundles of fibres. When a unidirectional flax/polyester ply is loaded in transverse tension the damage mechanisms are complex; cracks develop in the matrix, and at the fibre/matrix interface, but they also appear within the fibres themselves and in the lamellae within the fibre bundles. This emphasises the highly anisotropic nature of these flax fibres, whose average longitudinal Young's modulus is 59 GPa and whose transverse modulus is estimated here to be 8 GPa.
