A new method to simulate the hydrological state of soil under natural conditions PAB
Wild,Anna-Katharina; Marx,Michael Thomas; Eisenbeis,Gerhard.
Micro, macro and mesofauna in the soil often respond to fluctuating environmental conditions, resulting in changes of abundance and community structure. Effects of changing soil parameters are normally determined with samples taken in the field and brought to the laboratory, i.e. where natural environmental conditions may not apply. We devised a method (STAFD - soil tubes for artificial flood and drought), which simulates the hydrological state of soil in situ using implanted cores. Control tubes were compared with treatment tubes in which floods of 15, 30, 60 and 90 days, and droughts of 60, 90 and 120 days were simulated in the field. Flooding and drought were found to reduce number of individuals in all soil faunal groups, but the response to drought...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and dark septate fungi in plants associated with aquatic environments Acta Botanica
Marins,Josy Fraccaro de; Carrenho,Rosilaine.
ABSTRACT There have been several reports of symbionts in the roots of plants that live in aquatic environments. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are the most common microsymbionts and possibly recolonized the aquatic environment together with plants; however, their functions and the extent of their benefits are unclear. Furthermore, the presence of other groups of fungi, such as dark septate fungi (DSF), with functions supposedly analogous to those of mycorrhizal fungi, has also been reported. The present work provides a compilation of data regarding the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizae in plants from, or under the influence of, aquatic environments, and co-colonization by AMF and DSF. Forty species of non-vascular plants, ferns, fern allies, and...

Aspectos morfo-anatômicos e fisiológicos de Peltophorum dubium (Spr.) Taub. submetida ao alagamento e à aplicação de etrel Rev. Bras. Bot.
MEDRI,MOACYR E.; BIANCHINI,EDMILSON; PIMENTA,JOSÉ A.; DELGADO,MARCOS F.; CORREA,GERALDO T..

Ecological aspects of Byrsonima intermedia in riparian microenvironments PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Magalhães, Allan Freitas; Carvalho, Dulcinéia de; Silva Júnior, Jessé Marques da; Guimarães, João Carlos Costa.
This work aimed to better understand the ecology of Byrsonima intermedia A. Juss. and the mechanisms for initial establishment of this species in riparian microenvironments. The study was conducted at Peti Environmental Station - PETI (19o53'34.1"; 43o21'52.6"), São Gonçalo do Rio Abaixo, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The ecological parameters studied were: moisture at dispersion (fruit, seed and diaspore) and after dispersion (imbibition; initial growth and development). Diaspores and seeds present different behaviors. The faster water absorption process was in seeds without endocarp. The total growth length from embryo until seedling was 21 days. Seedlings establishes preferentially in flooded environments.

Effects of flooding on the spatial distribution of soil seed and spore banks of native grasslands of the Pantanal wetland Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Patricia Carla de; Torezan,José Marcelo Domingues; Cunha,Catia Nunes da.
ABSTRACTTo better understand the role that flooding plays in shaping plant communities of native floodable grasslands of the Pantanal and to characterize the spatial distribution of plants, we present the results of a survey of soil seed and spore banks using the seedling emergence method. We hypothesized that terrain subjected to the deepest and longest flooding should have higher propagule abundance and richness. The species composition and distribution of seeds and spores in the soil were assessed at five sites using three sampling positions at each according to inundation intensity. In each sample position 2cm-thick soil samples were collected in quadrats to a depth of 10cm. Litter was also collected as an independent layer. Sample monitoring in the...

Flood Planning and Climate Forecasts at the Local Level AgEcon
Wernstedt, Kris; Hersh, Robert.
We examine the use of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) forecasts for flood planning in the Pacific Northwest. Using theories of resource mobilization as a conceptual foundation, the paper relies on: 1) case studies of three communities vulnerable to flooding that have had access to long-term forecasts of ENSO conditions; and 2) analysis of data collected from a survey of nearly 60 local emergency managers, planners, and public works staff. We find that understanding the regulatory machinery and other institutions involved in using climate forecasts is critical to more effective use of these forecasts. Forecast use could be promoted by: 1) an extension service to broker climate information; 2) the identification or creation of federal authorities to fund...

Genetic variability and morphological modifications in flooding tolerance in maize, variety BRS-4154. Repositório Alice
FERREIRA, J. L.; COELHO, C. H. M.; MAGALHAES, P. C.; GAMA, E. E. G. e; BORÉM, L..
Maize plants of the variety BRS 4154 - Saracura were evaluated in different cycles of recurrenl selection to determine genetic gains in flooding talerance, arranged in a random block design. The maize variety BRS 4154 in four selection cycles (1, 5. 9 and 15), together with the flooding-sensilive variety BR 107 and siingle cross BRS 1010 as control, were sown and evaluated. The stress caused by waterlogged soi! reduced the weight of 100 seeds and grain yield but did nol affect the number of kernel rows, ear length or prolificacy. Selection for yield resulted in higher yields.

Impacts of considering climate variability on investment decisions in Ethiopia AgEcon
Block, Paul J.; Strzepek, Kenneth M.; Rosegrant, Mark W.; Diao, Xinshen.
Extreme interannual variability of precipitation within Ethiopia is not uncommon, inducing droughts or floods and often creating serious repercussions on agricultural and non-agricultural commodities. An agro-economic model, including mean climate variables, was developed to assess irrigation and road construction investment strategies in comparison to a baseline scenario over a 12-year time horizon. The motivation for this work is to evaluate whether the inclusion of climate variability in the model has a significant effect on prospective investment strategies and the resulting country-wide economy. The mean climate model is transformed into a variable climate model by dynamically adding yearly climate-yield factors, which influence agricultural...

Leaf anatomy changes related to physiological adaptations to flooding in Amazonian tree species Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Herrera,Ana; Escala,Marcia; Rengifo,Elizabeth.
In trees of the seasonally flooded forest of the Mapire River in Venezuela, early flooding induces a reversible diminution in leaf conductance and photosynthetic rate. With the aim of finding an anatomical explanation for the observed responses of leaf gas exchange, the characteristics of emerged leaves developed under drainage or after three months of flooding were examined in the tree species Acosmium nitens, Campsiandra laurifolia, Duroia fusifera, Eschweilera tenuifolia, Pouteria orinocoensis and Symmeria paniculata and in leaves developed only under flooding in Inga spuria and Tachigali davidsei. Anatomy was remarkably similar among species and families and consisted of a bi-layered palisade parenchyma, a 5-6-cell-thick spongy parenchyma and large...

Oleoresin yield of Pinus elliottii Engelm seedlings Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Ferreira,Alfredo Gui; Fior,Claudimar Sidnei; Gualtieri,Sonia Cristina Juliano.
Pinus elliottii is a fast-growing conifer well adapted to southern Brazil, used for wood fiber and resin production. Oleoresin production is part of the plant's defense systems and is induced by ethylene, which production is stimulated by hypoxic conditions. The experiment was designed with the goal of verifying whether one year-old plants had measurable oleoresin yield and if flooding led to increased oleoresin production. There was an increase of 78% in oleoresin production after 14 to 21 days of flooding and plants with larger stem diameters were more productive.

Preliminary study on hatching of rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) and copepods (Cyclopoida): response to flooding and organic fertilisation OceanDocs
Mwandya, A.W.; Kyewalyanga, M.S.; Valdenberg, A..
The effect of water flooding, organic fertiliser application and salinity manipulation in stimulating the hatching of rotifer resting eggs was investigated during the dry season (in August/September 1999) in simulation tanks and earthen ponds at Makoba, Zanzibar. The majority of hatched zooplankton included rotifers, identified as Brachionus plicatilis, and other zooplankton such as copepods and protozoa were present in small numbers. The number of rotifers hatched in simulation treatments with low salinity was higher than the values in treatments containing undiluted seawater. Up to 22 ± 1.5 (mean ± SE) rotifers/ml were counted in treatments with low salinity, whereas only a maximum of 13 ± 1. rotifers/ml were found in high-salinity treatments. On the...

Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) is a powerful tool used to measure gene expression. However, because of its high sensitivity, the method is strongly influenced by the quality and concentration of the template cDNA and by the amplification efficiency. Relative quantification is an effective strategy for correcting random and systematic errors by using the expression level of reference gene(s) to normalize the expression level of the genes of interest. To identify soybean reference genes for use in studies of flooding stress, we compared 5 candidate reference genes (CRGs) with the NormFinder and GeNorm programs to select the best internal control. The expression stability of the CRGs was evaluated in root tissues from soybean...

Root carbohydrate storage in young saplings of an Amazonian tidal várzea forest before the onset of the wet season Acta Botanica
Scarano,Fabio Rubio; Cattânio,José Henrique; Crawford,Robert M.M..
Root starch and glucose content were measured for young saplings of 18 Amazonian tidal várzea tree species during a dry season. The pattern of carbohydrate storage depended on the type of plant involved and soil topography which is directly linked to flood regime. Most plants showed high root carbohydrate content at this point in the dry season, however, several typically flood-tolerant species (particularly palm trees) presented a low root carbohydrate content, suggesting a strategy of acquiring reserves during the wet season to survive the dry season, when depletion occurs. Plant survival in these flood-prone forests seems to be the result of more than only one adaptive mechanism.

Seed Longevity of Spotted Spurge and Wild Poinsettia Under Diverse Environmental Conditions Planta Daninha
ASGARPOUR,R.; GHORBANI,R.; KHAJEH-HOSSEINI,M.; GOLZARDI,F.; ILKAEE,M.N..
ABSTRACT: Seed longevity under different environmental conditions is considered as one of the most important factors in the spread and persistence of an exotic species. The Experiments were conducted to determine seed persistence in soil, effects of submergence in water, flooding of the soil, and high temperatures on germination and viability of spotted spurge (Chamaesyce maculata) and wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla) as two exotic species in different regions of Golestan province. Spotted spurge seeds buried at depth of 10 cm maintained their viability above 95% after a year, while wild poinsettia seeds were destroyed completely after exhuming the soil. Seeds of both species were unable to germinate under submergence, but 92% of the spotted spurge...
