An analysis of the determinants of flood damages AgEcon
Ferreira, Susana.
In this paper we analyze mortality caused by 2,194 large flood events between 1985 and 2008 in 108 countries. Unlike previous studies that looked at natural-disaster mortality, we find that year-to-year changes in income and institutional determinants of vulnerability do not affect flood mortality directly. Income and institutions influence mortality only indirectly, through their impact on the intensity and frequency of floods. Population exposure affects the number of deaths both directly and indirectly. Higher population exposure results in more deaths once the flood has occurred, but it is associated with smaller floods. In developing countries it also reduces the count of floods.

Decision making support system for the adaptation and coexistence of extensive livestock farming in the dynamics of pantanal floods and droughts in face of climate change. Infoteca-e
PADOVANI, C. R.; ARAÚJO, A. F. de; ISHII, R. P.; MATSUBARA, E. T.; ESQUERDO, J. C. D. M.; ANTONIASSI, R. A. dos S..
The Pantanal is an extensive sedimentary plain, with seasonal flooding and where extensive livestock farming is the main economic activity. Flood seasonality is a natural process in wetlands, it naturally fertilizes native pastures that occur in large areas in the Pantanal, being the basis of cattle feed. In regions that flood by overflowing rivers or those that flood directly because of rain, large areas of native pasture are submerged from time to time with critical depths and durations, and in extreme events, there may be a drastic reduction in the supply of food and even an increase of cattle mortality due to starvation or drowning. Over more than 200 years of coexisting with floods, management strategies such as the removal of cattle from low,...

First Assessment of the Effects of the 2000 Southern Mozambique Floods on Coral Communities: The Case of Xai-Xai Lagoon OceanDocs
Gonçalves, P.M.B.; Pereira, M.A.M..
The southern part of Mozambique suffered, at the beginning of the present year, the worst floods in the last 50 years, which caused several fatalities and high material losses. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of this phenomenon on the coral communities of the Xai-Xai lagoon reef. Benthic category percentage cover was assessed in January 2000 (before the floods) and September 2000 (after the floods) using the line intercept transect (LIT). A decrease of hard coral percentage cover was observed, in the order of 58.5 %. The soft coral community was also affected, with a high decrease of percentage cover, about 90.4%. Other benthic category that showed an elevated decrease was coralline algae (85.1%). All other categories increased...

Flood-mediated use of habitat by large and midsized mammals in the Brazilian Pantanal Biota Neotropica
Lázari,Patrick Ricardo De; Santos-Filho,Manoel dos; Canale,Gustavo Rodrigues; Graipel,Maurício Eduardo.
The Brazilian Pantanal comprises a mosaic of forest and field environments harbouring a rich community of large and midsized mammals that are adapted to the annual hydrological cycle. Here we evaluated richness and composition of large and midsized mammals inhabiting forested and open habitats affected by yearly floods in the Pantanal in Cáceres from October 2009 to September 2010. We compared these communities in marshes, dry forests and riparian forests based on 640 camera-traps.nights, sights, tracks, faecal samples and interviews. We also compared results in a private land (Descalvados Farm) and in a protected area (Taiamã Ecological Station). In total, we sampled 26 large and midsized mammals, including five threatened and two near threatened species....

In situ record of sedimentary processes near the Rhone River mouth during winter events (Gulf of Lions, Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Marion, C.; Dufois, Francois; Arnaud, Mireille; Vella, C..
The environment is impacted by natural and anthropogenic disturbances that occur at different spatial and temporal scales, and that lead to major changes and even disequilibria when exceeding the resiliency capacities of the ecosystem. With an annual mean flow of 1700 m(3) s(-1), the Rhone River is the largest of the western Mediterranean basin. Its annual solid discharges vary between 2 and 20 Mt, with flood events responsible for more than 70% of these amounts. In the marine coastal area, close to the mouth, both flocculation and aggregation lead to the formation of fine-grained deposits, i.e. the prodelta. This area is characterized by sediment accumulation rates up to 20-50 cm yr(-1) and high accumulations of particle reactive contaminants such as...

Linking Danube River Activity to Alpine Ice-Sheet Fluctuations during the Last Glacial (ca. 33-17 ka BP): insights into the continental signature of Heinrich Stadials ArchiMer
Martinez-lamas, Ruth; Toucanne, Samuel; Debret, Maxime; Riboulot, Vincent; Deloffre, Julien; Boissier, Audrey; Cheron, Sandrine; Pitel, Mathilde; Bayon, Germain; Giosan, Liviu; Soulet, Guillaume.
Offshore archives retrieved from marine/lacustrine environments receiving sediment from large river systems are valuable Quaternary continental records. In the present study, we reconstruct the Danube River activity at the end of the last glacial period based on sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical analyses performed on long-piston cores from the north-west Black Sea margin. Our data suggest that the Danube River produced hyperpycnal floods throughout the ca. 33-17 ka period. Four main periods of enhanced Danube flood frequency, each of 1.5-3 kyr duration, are recorded at ca. 32.5 30.5 ka (equivalent to the first part of Heinrich Stadial HS 3), at ca. 29-27.5 ka (equivalent to Greenland Stadial 4), at ca. 25.3-23.8 ka (equivalent to HS 2) and at...

Infoteca-e

The Macroeconomic Impacts of Natural Disasters: New Evidence from Floods AgEcon
Cunado, Juncal; Ferreira, Susana.
We analyze the economic impacts of floods using new data on 3,184 large flood events in 118 countries between 1985 and 2008. We use panel vector auto-regressions to trace the dynamic response of output to three types of flood shocks. Our results robustly indicate that flood shocks tend to have a positive average impact on GDP growth, that this impact is limited to developing countries, that the effect is not confined to the agricultural sector, and that it is stronger when it is accompanied by an increase in gross fixed capital formation.
