Alkaline phosphatase activity in plasma and liver of rats submitted to chronic exposure to fluoride BABT
Fernandes,Mileni da Silva; Iano,Flávia Godoy; Rocia,Vivian; Yanai,Marcela Mitsuko; Leite,Aline de Lima; Furlani,Tatiana Almeida; Buzalaf,Marília Afonso Rabelo; Oliveira,Rodrigo Cardoso de.
The aim of this study was to compare the effect of fluoride (F) on alkaline phosphatase activity in the liver and plasma of the rats. Four groups of male Wistar rats (n=6), which received drinking water containing 5, 15 or 50 ppm F or deionized water (control) throughout the experiment were included in the study. The animals were euthanized and had their tissues and blood plasma collected for the analysis of fluoride and alkaline phosphatase. There was an increase in F concentration in most tissues in the animals treated with higher F concentrations, except for the heart. The alkaline phosphatase assay showed an increase in the activity in the liver and blood plasma of the animals treated with fluoride concentrations of 15 and 50 ppm (p<0.05). This...

Ecotoxicological effects of organotin compounds on oyster culture ArchiMer
Alzieu, Claude; Heral, Maurice.
The toxic effect of trialkyltin compounds is used in antifouling paints to protect vessels against biofouling organisrns. Tributyltin oxide (TBTO) or fluoride (TBTS) leaches by diffusion from the paint layer into the seawater. Trialkyltin compounds in aqueous solutions are resistant to hydrolysis and biodegradation, but are rapidly converted into diakyl, monoalkyl and inorganic tin by UV irradiation. As inhibiting agents of the oxidative phosphorylation, organotin compounds are extremely dangerous for aquatic organisms such as molluscs. The following estimated toxicity levels for Crassostrea gigas oyster larvae have been put forward : at 100 µg.l(1) the fecondation is inhibited, at 10 µg.l1 the already of 20 % of the eggs is affected larval development...

Li,K.Q.; Jia,S.S.; Ma,M.; Shen,H.Z.; Xu,L.; Liu,G.P.; Huang,S.Y.; Zhang,D.S..
Fluoride, which is often added to toothpaste or mouthwash in order to protect teeth from decay, may be a novel therapeutic approach for acceleration of periodontal regeneration. Therefore, we investigated the effects of fluoride on proliferation and mineralization in human periodontal ligament cells in vitro. The periodontal ligament cells were stimulated with various concentrations of NaF added into osteogenic inductive medium. Immunohistochemistry of cell identification, cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity assay, Alizarin red S staining and quantitative real-time-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were performed. Moderate concentrations of NaF (50-500 μmol/L) had pro-proliferation effects, while 500 μmol/L had the best effects. ALP...

High fluorine and other associated trace elements in waters from the south of the Pampean plain Phyton
Espósito,ME; Sequeira,ME; Paoloni,JD; Blanco,MC; Amiotti,N.
We investigated the levels of F and its relationship with As, B and V in ground and surface waters of the southern Pampas, where cases of dental and skeletal fluorosis, and arsenic in hair and urine samples have been detected in the rural population. Eating vegetables and cereals grown in irrigated areas with excessive fluoride may increase the risk of fluorosis due to the addition of the extra F contributed from other sources such as drinking water. Moreover, if these elements exceed the tolerance of crops produce toxicity and, like salinity, they decrease the potential crop yield. Within an area of 2300 km², 81 samples were taken from surface and groundwaters to determine F, As, B and V. Fluoride was detected in 86% of the sampled groundwaters, and in...

In vitro Fluoride Release and Tensile Bond Strength of a Polymeric Intra-Buccal Bioadhesive International Journal of Morphology
Pedrazzi,Vinícius; Lara,Elza Helena Guimarães; Panzeri,Heitor; Collett,John H; Issa,João Paulo Mardegan.
The intra-buccal polymeric bioadhesive systems that can stay adhered to the oral soft tissues for drug programmed release, with the preventive and/or therapeutic purpose has been employed for large clinical situations. A system based on hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose/Carbopol 934'/magnesium stearate (HPMC/Cp/StMg) was developed having the sodium fluoride as active principle. This kind of system was evaluated according to its resistance to the removal by means of physical test of tensile strength. Swine buccal mucosa extracted immediately after animals' sacrifice was employed as substrate for the physical trials, to obtain 16 test bodies. Artificial saliva with or without mucin was used to involve the substrate/bioadhesive system sets during the trials....

Microhardness and Ultrastructure of Demineralized Gamma-Irradiated Human Enamel after Diode Laser (980 nm) and Fluoride Surface Treatment BABT
Bakr,Mostafa AbdAllah; Saafan,Ali Mohamed; Maghraby,Eman Mohamed Fathy El; Rouby,Dalia Hussien El; Ahmed,Salwa Farid.
Abstract Quality of life drastically diminished after radiotherapy due to radiation induced oral complications. Fluoride was found to be helpful in decreasing the incidence of radiation caries; however it has not led to elimination of dental caries. Thus, new techniques containing low fluoride concentration or not containing fluoride at all, as laser irradiation, have been studied to prevent the beginning or progression of caries. So the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of laser surface treatment with or without fluoride on microhardness and ultrastructure of demineralized gamma irradiated enamel; Thirty enamel slabs were allocated into three groups (n=10): G slabs were subjected to gamma irradiation only; GL slabs were subjected to gamma...

PHYTOREMEDIATION OF FLUORIDE-CONTAMINATED WATER BY Landoltia punctata REA
Braga,Amanda F.; Borges,Alisson C.; Vaz,Lucas R. L.; Souza,Tamara D. de; Rosa,André P..
ABSTRACT Fluorine is released into the water environment naturally or by anthropogenic activities. Fluorine promotes health benefits at low concentrations, but it promotes adverse effects ranging from fluorosis to carcinogenic problems at high concentrations. Although fluorine removal from environment can occur through processes such as adsorption, reverse osmosis, and electrodialysis, the phytoremediation emerges as an accessible and environmentally friendly treatment. This research aimed to study the phytoremediation potential of Landoltia punctata for treating water contaminated with fluorine ion (fluoride). The central composite rotatable design was used to assess the effect of three variables in the process: pH ranging from 5 to 9; phosphate...

Safety of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) as food source: its initial fluoride toxicity study Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
ZHANG,Hai-Yan; CAO,Ming-Xiu; FODJO,Essy Kouadio; KONG,Cong; CAI,You-Qiong; SHEN,Xiao-Sheng; CHEN,Xue-Zhong.
Abstract Antarctic Krill, rich in many nutrients, is supposed to be one of the strategic food sources. However, it is not acceptable for direct consumption as traditional food, as its high content of fluoride is harmful to adults and children. Therefore, the safety of fluoride residue in Antarctic krill for food production should be investigated. In this research, the fluoride toxicity in Antarctic Krill was evaluated through mice feeding experiment. Their body weight was found not to be influenced by fluoride. However, dental fluorosis was observed in the krill group and the NaF group. Fluoride content in liver, kidney, urine, and bones are significantly different (P<0.05) among these three groups, which amount to plateau during the first ten days of...

Sodium fluoride does not alter sperm production or sperm morphology in rats BABT
Chioca,Lea Rosa; Müller,Juliane Centeno; Boareto,Ana Cláudia; Andreatini,Roberto; Dalsenter,Paulo Roberto.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of sodium fluoride (NaF) on the male reproductive system. Adult male rats were exposed to NaF in drinking water for 30 days at three concentrations: 1.54 (control, tap water), 50 and 100 ppm. Body and organ weights, daily sperm production, sperm number and morphology were investigated. No difference was observed on the sperm number and morphology among the groups, as well as body weight and organ absolute and relative weights. Overall, despite the presence of a mild degree of dental fluorosis in the higher dose group, the results indicated that exposure to NaF at the doses used in the present study did not adversely affect sperm production and morphology of male rats.
