AGRONOMICAL AND HYGIENIC-HEALTH QUALITY OF DURUM WHEAT PRODUCTIONS FROM DIFFERENT MEDITERRANEAN ENVIRONMENTS UNDER ORGANIC AND CONVENTIONAL CROPPING Organic Eprints
Camerini, M.; Taddei, F.; Bentivenga, G.; Melloni, S.; Aureli, G.; Quaranta, F..
In 2009/2010, eight durum wheat cultivars were compared in organic and conventional cropping system in two different locations of south - central Italy. A huge dataset was evaluated, including quality and agronomic traits. As expected, grain protein content revealed to be the real Achille’s heel for organic productions, seen as average values were not far from the Italian national standard for durum wheat minimum value of protein content (11.5 %). Anyway, values lower than expected were obtained also in conventional management. Protein quality of organically produced grain was as good as the conventional one. No Deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination was recorded in organic durum wheat even in environments where significant DON levels (although clearly lower...

Agronomical techniques to improve technological and sanitary quality Organic Eprints
David, C.; Celette, F.; Abecassis, J.; Carcea, M.; Dubois, D.; Friedel, J.K.; Hellou, G.; Jeuffroy, M.H.; Mäder, P.; Thomsen, I.K..
In spite of variable grain protein contents, baking quality of organic wheat was found to be acceptable to good. Mycotoxin (DON) infestation was generally low on tested grain samples. Choice of wheat cultivar was the most efficient way to obtain higher grain quality. Fertilization with readily available nitrogen and, to a lower extent, association with legumes and green manures with mixtures containing fodder legumes also improved grain quality. Reduced tillage affected soil quality and wheat yield but had little effects on grain quality.

Auswirkungen einer Schwefeldüngung auf Ertrag und Qualität von Weizen schwefelmangelgefährdeter Standorte des Ökologischen Landbaus. Organic Eprints
Hagel, Ingo.

Organic Eprints
Kunz, Peter; Buchmann, Markus; Cuendet, Catherine.

Breeding for bunt resistance in organic wheat and spelt Organic Eprints
Borgen, Anders.
Common bunt (Tilletia caries) is one of the most evastating plant diseases, and a particular problem for organic seed production. Organic farming aims at controlling pests and diseases with the use of biodiversity and resistance. However most organic wheat fields today are sown with monocultures of pure line varieties, and resistance to common bunt is rarely used, even this disease causes severe problems for seed producers and for farm saved seed, as infected seed lots are discarded because of contamination with bunt spores. To improve the system, organic wheat needs resistance to common bunt that is effective enough to prevent development of the disease over time. For this reason several initiatives are ongoing to improve bunt resistance in organic wheat...

CEREALICOLTURA BIOLOGICA: INTERVENTI AGROTECNICI E GENETICI PER IL MIGLIORAMENTO QUANTI-QUALITATIVO DEL FRUMENTO DURO E TENERO E LA VALORIZZAZIONE DEI PRODOTTI DERIVATI Organic Eprints
In order to guarantee a suitable income to the farmers and respond to the consumers’ demand, European Commission has proposed new guidelines for the cultivation of cereals. Such proposal strictly depends on: previous decisions of the Community which didn’t give the expected results; the presence of new exporting countries on the international market; the variable cereal production of the last years. Being the new guidelines involving further economic sacrifices of the cereal farmers this project would become essential to recover a strong competitiveness on the international cereals' market. The competitiveness of cereal sector can be increased by innovative high quality varieties and the set up of suitable cultural techniques maximizing the germoplasm...

Climate Change Effects on Plant Ecosystems – Genetic Resources for Future Barley Breeding Organic Eprints
Ingvordsen, Cathrine Heinz.
Climate Change Effects on Plant Ecosystems – Genetic Resources for Future Barley Breeding. A growing population and a considerable increase in living standards worldwide are increasing the demand on the primary production. At the same time, climate change is projected to lower the primary production due to increases in the atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide ([CO2]) and ozone ([O3]), rising temperatures and extreme climate events such as floods, storms and heatwaves. These predictions are compounded by the projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which state that the world is heading towards a worst-case climate scenario unless actions are taken collectively in the very near future. Crop yields have stagnated since the start...

Comparative evaluation of phytochemical profiles and identification of flavonoids in cereal grains Organic Eprints
Liu, Q; Borgen, Anders; Trust, Beta.
The phytochemicals including flavonoids and phenolic acids mainly contained in the outer layer of the kernels are key factors responsible for the biofunctionality of whole grains. The phytochemical profiles of twelve grain samples comprising 6 wheats, 3 barleys and 3 oats were studied for comparative evaluation of their antioxidant properties. Total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities (DPPH and ORAC) of the grain extracts were measured. The bound phenolic acids were identified and quantified using HPLC and mass spectrometry. The flavonoids in different grain were analyzed using HPLC and tandem mass spectrometric techniques. TPC in acidified methanol extracts ranged from 164 to 226, 264-391, and 308-331 mg/100 g for wheat, oats and barley,...

Detection of feral GT73 transgenic oilseed rape (Brassica napus) along railway lines on entry routes to oilseed factories in Switzerland Organic Eprints
Hecht, Mirco; Oehen, Bernadette; Schulze, Jürg; Brodmann, Peter; Bagutti, Claudia.
To obtain a reference status prior to cultivation of genetically modified oilseed rape (OSR, Brassica napus L.) in Switzerland, the occurrence of feral OSR was monitored along transportation routes and at processing sites. The focus was set on the detection of (transgenic) OSR along railway lines from the Swiss borders with Italy and France to the respective oilseed processing factories in Southern and Northern Switzerland (Ticino and region of Basel). A monitoring concept was developed to identify sites of largest risk of escape of genetically modified plants into the environment in Switzerland. Transport spillage of OSR seeds from railway goods cars particularly at risk hot spots such as switch yards and (un)loading points but also incidental and...

Direkte und indirekte Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Mehlqualität von Öko-Weizensorten Organic Eprints
Linnemann, Ludger.
Direct and indirect methods for determining the technological flour quality of modern wheat varieties with high gluten quality have been assessed. Direct methods like the commonly used Rapid-Mix-Test (RMT) and an optimized baking test were compared to the indirect parameters gluten and crude protein. The results for the optimized baking test in 2007 showed more than 30 % higher loaf volume (713 ml/100 g flour) compared with the RMT (544 ml/100 g flour). In this selection of varieties, the determination of wet gluten between two laboratories showed no consistency in the results. In addition to that, very good flour quality (>660 ml/100 g flour) started on a relatively low crude protein level of flours > 9,0 %, but low correlations were obtained for...

Does Wheat Cultivar Choice Affect Crop Quality and Soil Microbial Communities in Cropping Systems? Organic Eprints
Nelson, Alison; Frick, B.; Clapperton, J.; Quideau, S.; Spaner, Dr. Dean.
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars may have differential effects on soil microbial communities and the breadmaking quality of harvested grain. We compared six Canadian spring wheat cultivars under organic and conventional management systems for yield, breadmaking quality and soil phospholipid fatty acid analysis (PLFA) profile. Yields were lower, but protein levels were higher in the organic system. Cultivars differed for quality traits, but all cultivars had acceptable levels for processing. There were small differences in PLFA profiles for cultivars in the conventional system, but none in the organic system. More significant correlations between grain quality and PLFA measures were present in the organic system. Protein levels and breadmaking quality...
