Bio-fortification and isotopic labelling of Se metabolites in onions and carrots following foliar application of Se and 77Se 21
Kapolna, Emese; Laursen, Kristian Holst; Husted, Søren; Larsen, Erik H..
The aims were to bio-fortify onions by foliar application of selenium (Se) and to intrinsically label bioactive Se-metabolites in onion and carrot by enriched, stable77Se for use in human physiological studies. Onion bulbs and leaves were enriched in Se by repeated foliar spraying of 10 or 100 μg Se mL-1 solutions of sodium selenite (Se(IV)) or sodium selenate (Se(VI)). ICP-MS analysis of onion leaves and bulbs showed that the Se concentration was enhanced by up to a factor of approximately 50 and 200 in bulbs and leaves, respectively. HPLC-ICP-MS analysis of proteolytic plant extracts showed that foliar application of Se(IV) gave rise to bio-synthesis of a higher fraction of the desired organic Se species and was better tolerated by the plants than...

Discrimination of conventional and organic white cabbage from a long-term field trial study using untargeted LC-MS-based metabolomics 21
Mie, Axel; Laursen, Kristian Holst; Aberg, K. Magnus; Forshed, Jenny; Lindahl, Anna; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian; Olsson, Marie; Knuthsen, Pia; Larsen, Erik Huusfeldt; Husted, Søren.
The influence of organic and conventional farming practices on the content of single nutrients in plants is disputed in the scientific literature. Here, large-scale untargeted LC-MS-based metabolomics was used to compare the composition of white cabbage from organic and conventional agriculture, measuring 1,600 compounds. Cabbage was sampled in 2 years from one conventional and two organic farming systems in a rigidly controlled long-term field trial in Denmark. Using Orthogonal Projection to Latent Structures-Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA), we found that the production system leaves a significant (p = 0.013) imprint in the white cabbage metabolome that is retained between production years. We externally validated this finding by predicting the production...

Effects of Cultivation Conditions for Apples on Growth Rates of Fruit Fly Larvae and Contents of Phenolics 21
Brandt, Kirsten; Ejlersen, Astrid; Nørbæk, Rikke; Lindhard Petersen, Hanne.
Apples were grown with 3 different alleyway groundcover management strategies, providing a wide range of nutrient availabilities to the trees, spanning the ranges normally found in both conventional and organic orchards. These treatments had significant effects on both yields and incidence of fungal diseases. However, the differences in yields and disease incidence cancelled each other out, resulting in identical average yields of marketable fruit, as reported earlier (Lindhard Petersen & Bertelsen 2002). These results indicated that the composition of the fruit may also differ, and that this material is useful as a model for investigating how growth conditions influence the content of nutritionally relevant compounds, and thus may affect the...

Growth and differentiation: Life processes in crops 21
Bloksma, Joke; Huber, Machteld.
This booklet discusses two basic life processes in nature:growth and differentiation. It uses the examples of apples, carrots and wheat to illustrate how growers can recognize these processes and can take practical measures to correct the balance between them in order to optimize the quality of their products.Thinking in growth and differentiation has proved valuable in the support, offered to growers by the Louis Bolk Instituut. It also speculates about the possible significance of these processes for human health.

Higher Antioxidant Activity, Total Flavonols, and Specific Quercetin Glucosides in Two Different Onion (Allium cepa L.) Varieties Grown under Organic Production: Results from a 6‑Year Field Study 21
Ren, Feiyue; Reilly, Kim; Kerry, Joseph P; Gaffney, Michael; Hossain, Mohammad; Rai, Dilip K.
We carried out a 6-year study to assess the effect of conventional, organic, and mixed cultivation practices on bioactive compounds (flavonoids, anthocyanins) and antioxidant capacity in onion. Total flavonoids, total anthocyanins, individual flavonols, individual anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity were measured in two varieties (‘Hyskin’ and ‘Red Baron’) grown in a long-term split-plot factorial systems comparison trial. This is the first report of repeated measurements of bioactive content over an extensive time period in a single crop type within the same trial. Antioxidant activity (DPPH and FRAP), total flavonol content, and levels of Q 3,4′ D and Q 3 G were higher in both varieties under fully organic compared to fully conventional management....

Lagerfähigkeit und Inhaltsstoffe von Möhren aus der biologisch-dynamischen und konventionellen Praxis 21
Fleck, Michael; Hagel, Ingo; Meier-Ploeger, Angelika.

Nutritional Consequences of Using Organic Agricultural Methods in Developing Countries 21
Brandt, Kirsten; Kidmose, Ulla.
In addition to improved yields, the use of organic methods can benefit the nutritional value of foods in several ways, compared with subsistence agriculture, and in some respects also when compared with the use of high-input conventional farming methods. The recycling of organic matter retards depletion of the soil and ensures that increases in yield are not offset by mineral deficiencies caused by unbalanced plant nutrition. City populations can use organic products to minimize their intake of pesticide residues and nitrate. Improved nutritional status of crops under low-input conditions can increase the contents of protein and vitamin A, but can also increase the contents of some anti-nutrients. Improved availability of firewood through agroforestry...

Økologisk kost og sundhed 21
Brandt, Kirsten.
In 2000-2001 a review was produced on the topic "Organic food and human health", (http://www.agrsci.dk/foejo/DK/sider/pub/fojorap.html ). The review evaluated a large number of studies comparing the constituents of organic and conventional foods, as well as feeding studies comparing reproduction and health of animals fed with organic or conventional feed. Additionally studies on the connection between consumer values and food production systems were reviewed. The results showed that organic plant foods consistently contain more vitamin C, natural pesticides and higher dry weight percentage, less b-carotene, pesticide residues and protein, but the protein has a higher percentage of essential amino acids than in conventional plants. Organic animal...

Organic food and health – a multigeneration animal experiment 21
Brandt, Kirsten; Bügel, Susanne Højbjerg; Ritskes-Hoitinga, Merel; Frøsig, Lars.
The overall objective is to determine, if conventional and organic food products show differences in effects on animal physiology, of a type and magnitude, that indicates that such products will affect humans differently. The agricultural treatments used are: 1: An organic cultivation treatment, with low input of nutrients through animal manure and use of catch crops, and no pesticides. 2: A conventional cultivation system, with high input of nutrients through mineral fertiliser and intensive use of pesticides. 3: A combination of 1 and 2, with low input of nutrients, primarily animal manure, and intensive use of pesticides. The treatments will be established on two sites. Wheat, potatoes and oilseed rape will be produced in Foulum, and carrots,...

Organic Food and Health: A new project to study the effects of plant cultivation methods (organic and conventional) on nutritional value, health and reproduction in an animal experiment 21
Brandt, Kirsten; Nygaard Larsen, Hanne; Andersen, Jens-Otto; Mølgaard, Jens-Peter; Lauridsen, Charlotte; Jørgensen, Henry; Gundersen, Vagn; Larsen, Erik; Badsberg, Jens Henrik; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
Many consumers believe that food from plants grown under certain conditions, such as organic agriculture, will benefit health more than conventional food. This cannot be determined simply by analysing the material, since our understanding of the connections between food components and health is still to imprecise for such a purpose. Rather than waiting until basic research provides the knowledge needed for this approach, in the spring of 2001 we have initiated a project to study physiological effects of plant quality directly, in an animal experiment. The following cultivation treatments are used to grow plants that are typical ingredients for a human diet (potato, mature peas, kale, spring wheat, oilseed rape, carrots and apples): 1. A model of a...
