To develop and implement ecosystem-based management, it is critical to monitor foodweb components or functional groups which are robust to uncertainty in ecosystem structure and functioning yet sensitive to changes. To select such functional groups for the Bay of Biscay continental shelf, both quantitative and qualitative foodweb models were developed. First, functional groups for which predictions of directions of change following an increase in primary productivity, prey or predators, or in fishing activities were identical across alternative qualitative model structures were identified. As ilhas flutuantes livres englobam várias espécies vegetais tais como camalotes e gramíneas. Nas folhas e raízes destas plantas encontra-se uma diversidade de organismos. Este trabalho teve como objetivo fazer o levantamento das espécies vegetais componentes das ilhas flutuantes livres e conhecer os organismos associados e seus hábitos alimentares. Free floating islands include several species such as water hyacinth and grasses. In leaves and roots of these plants there are a diversity of organisms. This study aimed to survey the plant species of these free floating islands and recognize the associated organisms and its food habits.

Trophic ecology of the European Hake in the Gulf of Lions, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer

The European hake, Merluccius merluccius, is an important resource for Mediterranean fisheries. This study focuses on juvenile and adult hake feeding ecology in the Gulf of Lions, using information from scientific surveys carried out during two seasons and three years (2004-2006). Stomach content and stable isotope (ä15N, ä13C) analyses were performed, and the main factors explaining variations in ä15N were investigated using GLMs. In the Gulf of Lions, hake mostly fed on crustaceans and fish and a dominant piscivorous regime was reached at 15 cm total length. Pelagic fish (sardine, anchovy and small blue whiting) were the main source of prey (40%-80%) and cannibalism was low (<5%). The results confirmed that hake is an opportunistic feeder and also...
