A model for the importance of large arborescent palms in the dynamics of seasonally-dry amazonian forests Biota Neotropica
Salm,Rodolfo; Jalles-Filho,Euphly; Schuck-Paim,Cynthia.
In this study we propose a model that represents the importance of large arborescent palms in the dynamics of seasonally-dry Amazonian forests. Specifically, the model is aimed at guiding the investigation of the role of large arborescent palms on forest regeneration and succession. Following disturbance, the high level of luminosity reaching recently formed forest gaps favors the quick proliferation of shade-intolerant lianas that, by casting shade on the crowns of mature forest trees and increasing tree-fall probability, suppress forest succession. Due to their columnar architecture palm trees are, however, not severely affected by vines. As the palms grow, the canopy at the gaps becomes gradually higher and denser, progressively obstructing the passage...

Changes in the floristic composition of a Terra Firme rain forest In Brazilian Amazonia over an eight-year period In response to logging Acta Amazonica
CARVALHO,João Olegário Pereira de.
Changes in the floristic composition over an eight-year period in a logged area at the Tapajós National Forest in Brazilian Amazonia arc discussed. Two treatments of different intensities of logging were compared with an undisturbed (control) forest. Data were collected from permanent sample-plots. The effects of logging on floristic composition were stronger in the more heavily logged treatment. The number of species decreased immediately after logging, but started to increase before the fifth year after logging and was higher at the end of the study period than before logging. The more heavily logged plots responded more to disturbances, as judged by the increase in the number of species during the period after logging. This forest appears to recover its...

Changes in tree species richness, stand structure and soil properties in a successional chronosequence in northern Chiloé Island, Chile RChHN
ARAVENA,JUAN C.; CARMONA,MARTÍN R.; PÉREZ,CECILIA A.; ARMESTO,JUAN J..
We studied a chronosequence of forest fragments in northern Chiloé Island, southern Chile, with the aim of assessing ecosystem recovery patterns following anthropogenic disturbance. Hypotheses regarding successional trends in tree species richness, the replacement of shade-intolerant by shade-tolerant species, and the impact of disturbance on soil properties were evaluated in nine forest stands. The chronosequence encompassed two early (minimum stand age <15 years), three mid-successional (30-60 years), three late-successional (129-134 years), and one old-growth stand (ca. 200 years). Stand ages were estimated by coring a minimum of 30 canopy trees in each stand. Early and mid-successional stands showed evidence of human disturbance by fire of moderate...

Cost-benefit analysis of industrial and homemade dendrometer bands Acta Botanica
Carvalho,Fabrício Alvim; Felfili,Jeanine Maria.
Dendrometer bands are used to make repeated measurements of tree radial growth. Two types of dendrometers are used worldwide, the industrial and the homemade. Homemade dendrometers prevail in Brazilian forestry studies, but researchers have trouble constructing and installing them. An easier solution is to use industrial dendrometer bands, but they are not produced in Brazil and, therefore, are expensive and might not be appropriate for local environmental conditions. We analyzed trunk growth measurements each month (from February 2008 to January 2009) using both industrial (imported) and homemade (national components) dendrometer bands installed on 20 trees of Acacia tenuifolia in a seasonally dry forest on limestone outcrops in central Brazil....

Dendrochronology of species from Brazilian Araucaria Forest, Candoi, PR PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Mattos, Patricia Póvoa de; Santos, Andreia Taborda dos; Oliveira, Yeda Maria Malheiros de; Rosot, Maria Augusta Doetzer.
In the present work the dendrochronological potential of six species of the Araucaria Forest is analyzed. The trunks of 20 trees were collected in Candoi, State of Parana, Brazil, from an area that belongs toELEJOR, Centrais Elétricas do Rio Jordão, for the following species: Araucaria angustifolia, Clethra scabra, Cedrela lilloi, Ocotea porosa, Podocarpus lambertii and Sebastiania commersoniana (3 to 6, from each species). The trunks were sawed, and at breast height a sample was taken from the center of the board, from bark to bark, crossing the pith, for macroscopic analysis. These samples were dried and polished, making possible the recognition and measurement of growth rings The historical climatic data series were provided by SIMEPAR, the State...

Don't camp beside the river: structure and dynamics of Andean alder (Alnus acuminata) forests affected by river floods, northwestern Argentina RChHN
EASDALE,TOMÁS A; SABATÉ,SEBASTIÁN; GRAU,ALFREDO.
Alnus acuminata (Betulaceae) is a pioneer tree that dominates mountain riparian forests throughout the eastern Andes. Early studies associated these forests with particular microclimatic conditions along river beds, but they were later linked to the periodical disturbance regime of mountain rivers. To understand the dynamics of these forests, we analysed tree age and spatial arrangement in two plots along Potrero river and another plot along La Horqueta river, Tucumán Province, north west Argentina. Through intensive tree coring and age reconstruction we identified similar-aged tree cohorts with maximum age ranges of eight years. Tree mapping and Moran's I spatial autocorrelation analysis showed that tree cohorts were spatially clumped, and provided...

Functional patterns of tree communities in natural Araucaria forests and old monoculture conifer plantations Acta Botanica
Malysz,Marcelo; Müller,Sandra Cristina; Milesi,Silvia Vendruscolo; Santos,Anita Stival dos; Overbeck,Gerhard Ernst.
ABSTRACT A functional perspective of tree communities is helpful for understanding forest dynamics, especially vegetation recovery after other land uses. Knowledge about ecological filters and survival strategies of trees are also important for the restoration of degraded areas. This study aimed to evaluate the functional composition and structure of adult and regenerative components of natural Araucaria forests, Araucaria plantations and plantations of exotic Pinus in subtropical southern Brazil. Differences in functional diversity and functional richness, and in community weighted mean trait values, including leaf traits and reproductive traits, were analyzed. RLQ analysis was used to assess the association between community structure, plant traits and...

"Gaps of deciduousness": cyclical gaps in tropical forests Scientia Agricola
Gandolfi,Sergius; Joly,Carlos Alfredo; Leitão Filho,Hermógenes de Freitas.
A new concept named "gaps of deciduousness" is introduced for the momentary annual bright places that appear under tropical and subtropical deciduous canopy trees when they are leafless, a cyclical kind of gap totally different from treefall gaps, whose importance in the regeneration ecology of these forests until now had not been discussed or evaluated. The aim of this article is to highlight the most significant aspects related to the concept of "gaps of deciduousness" and suggest the importance of developing studies to evaluate its relevance in the discussion of plant species coexistence and biodiversity maintenance in some tropical forests.

Growth rate of a terra firme rain forest in Brazilian Amazonia over an eight-year period in response to logging Acta Amazonica
Carvalho,João Olegário Pereira de; Silva,José Natalino Macedo; Lopes,José do Carmo Alves.
This paper deals with growth rates of trees > 5cm dbh over an eight-year period from 257 species at the Tapajós National Forest. The discussion is centred on the behaviour of the forest after logging. Permanent sample plots were established in 1981 and measured at the first time. The area was logged in 1982. Measurements after logging occurred in 1983, 1987 and 1989. Considering all species together, diameter increment was similar for both intensities of logging until five years after logging. Light-demanding species showed significantly higher growth rates than shade-tolerant species in the logged forest, with greater increment in the heavier treatment intensity. Commercial species also had higher growth rates in the heavier logged area, although those...

Natural regeneration dynamics of Mora paraensis (Ducke) Ducke in estuarine floodplain forests of the Amazon River. Repositório Alice
MIRANDA, Z. P.; GUEDES, M. C.; BATISTA, A. P. B.; SILVA, D. A. S. da.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the natural regeneration dynamics of Mora paraensis in floodplain forests in three regions of the eastern Amazon, and specifically, to explore the relationship between the abundance of regenerating trees and canopy openness. Tree height and circumference of all individuals of height >50 cm and diameter at breast height (DBH) <5 cm were measured in 2012, 2013 and 2015. A matrix of transitions was created and the natural regeneration (RR), demographic and dynamic rates were calculated. Hemispherical photos were used to measure canopy openness. There was no difference in the density of regenerating trees between the three study regions (mean = 2.957 ind. ha-1). The abundance of regenerating trees was highest in...

The importance of forest disturbance for the recruitment of the large arborescent palm Attalea maripa in a seasonally-dry Amazonian forest Biota Neotropica
Salm,Rodolfo.
The hypothesis that forest disturbance is important for the recruitment of the large arborescent palms Attalea maripa was tested with a natural experiment in the Pinkaití site (7º 46'S; 51º 57'W), a seasonally-dry Amazonian forest. A 8,000 m long trail, that crosses, in its lower half, an open forest along the Pinkaití stream bottomlands and, on its upper half, a dense forest on a hill, was divided in 160 0.15 ha (50x30 m) sampling units. At each unit, adult palms were counted and percentage of canopy openness was measured with a concave spherical densiometer. The palms were nearly five times more abundant at the bottomlands, whose forest had a canopy 14.8% more open than that of the hill; supporting the hypothesis that disturbance is important for their...

The population structure of Lonchocarpus cultratus in an Atlantic Forest riparian zone of the upper Paraná River, Brazil Biological Sciences
Almeida, Cristina Guilherme de; Souza, Maria Conceição de; Slusarsk, Simone Rodrigues.
The goal of this study was to evaluate the population structure of Lonchocarpus cultratus located in a riparian zone in the flood plain of the upper Paraná River. Data were collected on the stem diameter at breast height (DBH) and the plant height from two phytosociological inventories, which were performed with a 14-year interval, using data collected in studies conducted in 1992 and 2006 in an Atlantic Forest riparian zone remnant of Paraná State, Brazil. Class intervals for DBH and plant height were defined using the Spiegel equation, and the measured values were distributed between the different distinct classes. The distribution of individuals between the different DBH classes was analyzed using de Liocourt’s quotient (q). For both stages of the...
