Assessment of an anti-ageing structured cosmetic formulation containing goji berry 60
Leite,Fernanda de Godoy; Oshiro Júnior,João Augusto; Chiavacci,Leila Aparecida; Chiari-Andréo,Bruna Galdorfini.
Based on previous studies, it has been found that goji berry (GB), popularly known as a ‘miracle fruit’, has excellent antioxidant potential and can be used in the treatment of skin disorders associated with ageing. This study aimed to incorporate GB into a structured cosmetic in order to optimise its penetration. Stability studies of the formulation, determination of the antioxidant activity of the extract and of the formulation, rheological measurements, SAXS, polarised light microscopy and bioadhesion analyses were performed. The results indicated the antioxidant activity of the extract, which can be incorporated into an emulsified cosmetic formulation. The emulsified formulation containing the extract remained stable, even after being submitted to...

Comment protéger les acides gras polyinsaturés à longues chaînes oméga 3 (AGPI -- LC ω3) vis-à-vis de l’oxydation ? 5
Genot, Claude; Eymard, Sylvie; Viau, Michèle.
Increase the consumption of long-chain omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC ω3 PUFA) is highly recommended for their health benefits. However, these fatty acids are very prone to oxidation, which can impair sensory, nutritional and functional properties of foods. In this paper the various ways that increase LC ω3 PUFA stability during processing and storage of food products are reviewed. To efficiently protect LC ω3 PUFA during processing and storage of foods, a combined strategy, taking into account both the matrix and the process should be undertaken. First the quality of the raw materials should be rigorously controlled by, for example, increasing contents of in situ antioxidants and decreasing length of storage. Then, during processing and storage...

Commercial Biological Control Agents Targeted Against Plant-Parasitic Root-knot Nematodes 52
Tranier,Marie-Stéphane; Pognant-Gros,Johan; Quiroz,Reynaldo De la Cruz; González,Cristóbal Noé Aguilar; Mateille,Thierry; Roussos,Sevastianos.
Root-knot nematodes are microscopic round worms, which cause severe agricultural losses. Their attacks affect the productivity by reducing the amount and the caliber of the fruits. Chemical control is widely used, but biological control appears to be a better solution, mainly using microorganisms to reduce the quantity of pests infecting crops. Biological control is developing gradually, and with time, more products are being marketed worldwide. They can be formulated with bacteria, viruses or with filamentous fungi, which can destroy and feed on phytoparasitic nematodes. To be used by the farmers, biopesticides must be legalized by the states, which has led to the establishment of a legal framework for their use, devised by various governmental...

Discovery and development of biological agents to control crop pests 82
Slininger,Patricia J.; Behle,Robert W.; Jackson,Mark A.; Schisler,David A..
Thousands of potential microbial biocontrol agents have been isolated from agricultural fields and crops during research over the last 80 years, yet only a few are in commercial use. Recently, public health and safety concerns about the environmental impact of chemical pesticides have led to consideration of biological control as a natural approach to maintaining crop health. Despite environmental incentives and strong research efforts, commercialization of biocontrol agents has been slow to evolve. The momentum of the chemical industry is difficult to shift, and fermentation processes tend to be more expensive to operate than synthetic chemical processes.Yet there is a demand for biological control products, especially in agricultural niche markets, where...

Effect of formulation on the quality of frozen bread dough 52
Salas-Mellado,Myriam M.; Chang,Yoon Kil.
The main objective of this work was to determine the influence of formulation on the stability of bread dough during frozen storage. Bread doughs containing gluten and trehalose were submitted to mechanical freezing at -30° C and stored frozen for 45 days. Two types of instant yeast were tested: (A) for sweet doughs and (B) for savoury doughs. Specific volume was significantly affected by the yeast type, type A showing better effect than type B. Frozen storage of the doughs negatively affected the specific volume, crumb hardness and technological score of the bread. The addition of 10% trehalose had a beneficial effect on the cell survival rate for both the yeasts.

LIPID VESICLES: APPLICATIONS, PRINCIPAL COMPONENTS AND METHODS USED IN THEIR FORMULATIONS. A REVIEW 37
CAMILO,Cicera J.; LEITE,Débora O. D.; SILVA,Angelo R. A. e; MENEZES,Irwin R. A.; COUTINHO,Henrique D. M.; COSTA,José G. M. da.
ABSTRACT Liposomes and niosomes are currently the most studied lipid vesicles in the nanomedicine field. The system formed by a phospholipid bilayer in aqueous medium allows these vesicles to carry both hydrophilic and lipophilic compounds, providing an increase in solubility of drugs already used in conventional therapy. The focus on the development of these vesicles should be directed to determining the ideal composition, with low toxicity, biocompatibility and which remains stable for long periods. These characteristics are related to the components used for formulation and the substances that will be encapsulated. Another important point relates to the methods used during formulation, which are important in determining the type of vesicle formed,...

Prednisone raw material characterization and formulation development 60
Toehwé,Leonardo Henrique; Prado,Livia Deris; Rocha,Helvécio Vinícius Antunes.
ABSTRACT Solid dosage forms for oral use, particularly tablets, are the most highly used dosage forms in therapy because they are easily administered, have high productivity and relatively low cost and provide a more stable drug to form a semi-solid net. Numerous parameters influence the quality of the final dosage form. In this study, the dissolution profile of 20-mg prednisone tablets bioequivalent to the reference product and three test formulations were evaluated using stability testing. During the study, prednisone tablets and the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) prednisone from two different manufacturers were characterized with respect to their physical and physicochemical properties. The results showed that the dissolution profiles of the...

Zarpelon,Talyta Galafassi; Guimarães,Lúcio Mauro da Silva; Alfenas-Zerbini,Poliane; Lopes,Eli Sidney; Mafia,Reginaldo Gonçalves; Alfenas,Acelino Couto.
Abstract Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria strains from special formulations have been used to optimize eucalyptus cutting production. To undertake quality control for the formulated products, the rhizobacterial strains should be characterized to assess their purity and authentication. In the present study, we characterized nine strains of rhizobacteria, including three Bacillus subtilis (S1, S2 and 3918), two Pseudomonas sp. (MF4 and FL2), P. putida (MF2), P. fulva (Ca), Frateuria aurantia (R1), and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (CIIb). The strains were differentiated by colony morphology after 24 h of incubation in three different solid state culture media (glucose-nutritive agar, 523 medium and yeast extract-mannitol agar), sensitivity to a panel of...

Selectivity of Chlorimuron-Ethyl to Castorbean Crops 87
MACIEL,C.D.G.; LUSTOSA,S.B.C.; HELVIG,E.O.; COSTA,A.G.F.; RIBEIRO,R.B.; MATIAS,J.P..
ABSTRACT: Castorbean presents high sensitivity to competition; therefore, it is necessary to develop alternatives for the weed management, mainly for the chemical control of eudicotyledons species. The goal of this work was to evaluate the selectivity of chlorimuron-ethyl to castorbean crops in different development stages. Four experiments differentiated by the genetic material were conducted: Lyra, Íris and Savana hybrids and AL Guarany 2002 cultivar. The treatments corresponded to the application conditions of chlorimuron-ethyl [sample control with no application, doses of 15 e 20 g a.i. ha-1 with the formulations Classic™ and Clorimuron Master Nortox™] in two phenological crop stages (4 to 5 and 7 to 8 true leaf stages). The experimental design was in...
