Insulin stimulates the tyrosine kinase activity of its receptor resulting in the tyrosine phosphorylation of pp185, which contains insulin receptor substrates IRS-1 and IRS-2. These early steps in insulin action are essential for the metabolic effects of insulin. Feeding animals a high-fructose diet results in insulin resistance. However, the exact molecular mechanism underlying this effect is unknown. The present study aimed to study the effects of exercise training (ET) performed by rats on a 10-week high-fructose diet on metabolic, hemodynamic, and autonomic changes, as well as intraocular pressure (IOP). Male Wistar rats receiving fructose overload in drinking water (100 g/L) were concomitantly trained on a treadmill for 10 weeks (FT group) or kept sedentary (F group), and a control group (C) was kept in normal laboratory conditions. Invertase, glucose oxidase and catalase for converting sucrose to fructose and gluconic acid through batch and membrane-continuous reactors BJPS

Conversion of sucrose into fructose and gluconic acid using invertase, glucose oxidase and catalase was studied by discontinuous (sequential or simultaneous addition of the enzymes) and continuous (simultaneous addition of the enzymes in a 100 kDa-ultrafiltration membrane reactor) processes. The following parameters were varied: concentration of enzymes, initial concentration of substrates (sucrose and glucose), pH, temperature and feeding rate (for continuous process). The highest yield of conversion (100%) was attained through the discontinuous (batch) process carried out at pH 4.5 and 37 ºC by the sequential addition of invertase (14.3 U), glucose oxidase (10,000 U) and catalase (59,000 U).

Mead production represents a possible economic alternative to honey producers that intend to obtain honey products with surplus value. From that the present work aims to study the influence of using different production scales on the quality of the final mead obtained and on the process performance. Increasing the production scale almost ten times (1.5 to 20 L), some differences were observed. Maximum specific growth rates equal to 0.045 and 0.038 h-1 were obtained for fermentations carried out at 1.5 and 20 L, respectively. MODELING THE U.S. SWEETENER SECTOR: AN APPLICATION TO THE ANALYSIS OF POLICY REFORM AgEcon

This report documents a modeling framework for the U.S. sweeteners industry developed in the Specialty Crops Branch (SCB) of the Economic Research Service (ERS). Several innovations not seen in other studies include the regional modeling of sugar processing capacity adjustments and detailed sectoral analysis of sweeteners demand, using an Almost Ideal Demand Systems (AIDS) approach. The report describes the use of the framework to evaluate the benefits and costs of the current U.S. sugar program.

Fructose accumulates in tissue and body fluids of patients affected by hereditary fructose intolerance (HFI), a disorder caused by the deficiency of aldolase B. We investigated the effect of acute fructose administration on the biochemical profile and on the activities of the Krebs cycle enzymes in the cerebral cortex of young rats. Rats received a subcutaneous injection of NaCl (0.9 %; control group) or fructose solution (5 μmol/g; treated group). The objective of the present study was to identify metabolic, cardiovascular and autonomic changes induced by fructose overload administered in the drinking water of rats for 8 weeks. Female Wistar rats (200-220 g) were divided into 2 groups: control (N = 8) and fructose-fed rats (N = 5; 100 mg/L fructose in drinking water for 8 weeks). The autonomic control of heart rate was evaluated by pharmacological blockade using atropine (3 mg/kg) and propranolol (4 mg/kg). The animals were submitted to an intravenous insulin tolerance test (ITT) and to blood glucose measurement. Abstract In the postharvest stage, taste and flavor are the key components of the marketability of tomato. Therefore, greater emphasis is now being placed on improving traits such as sugar content. In this study postharvest ultraviolet-B (UV-B) treatments on sugar, total soluble solids, and color of tomatoes harvested at different stages were investigated. Tomatoes harvested at turning, pink, and red stages were treated with two different doses of UV-B irradiation: UVB4 and UVB8. Production of inulinase from Kluyveromyces marxianus using Dahlia tuber extract BJM

Various carbon sources were evaluated for production of inulinase by yeast, Kluyveromyces marxianus MTCC 3995. Highest inulinase activity was observed with Dahlia extract (25.3 nkat mL-1) as carbon source. The enzyme activity was 1.4 folds higher than that observed in media containing pure chicory inulin (17.8 nkat mL-1). The yeast showed good growth on a simple medium containing dahlia extract (20% w/v) and yeast extract (2%w/v) as carbon and nitrogen source respectively, in 96 h. at 28°C and 120 rpm. Lowest inulinase yield (4.8 nkat mL-1) was seen in the medium containing glucose as C-source. Abstract The objective of this study was to characterize jabuticaba fruits for their proximate composition, minerals profile, and predominant sugars during fruit physiological development. The fruits were harvested ten days after anthesis (DAA) until maturity, at intervals of four days between collections. The period between anthesis and maturity was 34 days. An increase in moisture was observed, as for protein and lipids up to 18 DAA, with subsequent reduction until ripening, while an opposite behavior was observed for ash and carbohydrates levels. A potentiometric electronic tongue with 36 cross-sensibility lipo/polymeric membranes was built and applied for semi-quantitative and quantitative analysis of non-alcoholic beverages. A total of 16 commercial fruit juices (e.g., orange, pineapple, mango and peach) from five different brands were studied. In the semi-quantitative approach, the signal profiles recorded by the device were used together with a stepwise linear discriminant analysis to differentiate four beverage groups with different fruit juice contents: >30%, 14–30%, 6–10% and <4%. 不同時期的乾旱處理及除葉對梨樹碳水化合物含量及枝梢形成之影響 Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute

[[abstract]]梨低需冷性新品系′SH–085′嫁接於鳥梨砧木上於遮雨的環境下種於栽培槽中,於由長日開始轉變為短日後的三個不同時期進行兩種不同乾濕程度的水分管理,而後於78年10月19日、11月3日、11月16日及12月1日分別取樣及除葉後再以高土壤水分含量(-0.01MPa~-0.05MPa)處理,觀察枝梢再生長及開花結果之情形並分析不同時期碳水化合物蓄積之情形。第二年短果枝數的形成與處理之間有特定的關係存在。後期的乾旱處理有利於澱粉在枝條及根部的累積,山梨糖醇在各處理及各植株部位皆有不同的量存在,但其含量與處理間無明顯的關係,葡萄糖與果糖主要存在於葉部,在枝條含量很少,僅在根部還有少量存在,在完全乾旱的處理甚至不存在,蔗糖普遍存在於葉片及根中,在十月底之前幾不存在於枝條中,可見葡萄糖及果糖乃是充當碳水化合物累積過程的中間代謝產物,碳水化合物的貯藏主要是以山梨糖醇、蔗糖及澱粉的形式存在。 Pear clone with low-chilling requirement ′SH-085′ were planted in containers under shelter, after being grafted on bird pear rootstocks.
