Agronomical, genetical and developmental characterization of fs6.4: a Quantitative Trait Locus controlling melon fruit shape National Institute of Agronomic Research

The genetic control of melon fruit shape is complex. Recently, several Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) affecting melon fruit shape have been identified using an introgression line population derived from the cross between a Cucumis melo ‘Piel de Sapo’ cultivar and the Korean accession PI 161375 ‘Songwan Charmi’ (SC). One of these QTLs, fs6.4, was selected for further genetical and developmental characterization. The SC allele of fs6.4 induces round fruit by limiting the longitudinal development of the fruit. Its mode of gene action is largely additive, showing low interactions with environment, genetic background or when combined with other fruit shape QTLs. Effect of preharvest spraying with thidiazuron on fruit quality and maturity of apples Rev. Bras. Frutic.

Apple trees, cultivars Gala and Fuji, were sprayed at full bloom with thidiazuron (TDZ) at the doses of 0, 5, 10, or 20 g (a.i.) ha-1 and fruit were assessed for quality and maturity. In both cultivars, the increase of TDZ dose had detrimental effects on fruit quality, causing a reduction of fruit red surface and an increase of percentage of fruit that was asymmetrical and with calyx-end rot. TDZ caused an increment of calyx-end aperture that might have increased calyx-end rot. TDZ increased density and the length : diameter (L : D) ratio of the fruit. The number of viable seeds was not affected by TDZ. TDZ resulted in a substantial delay of fruit maturity in 'Gala' but not in 'Fuji'. Influence of floral structure and flower bud quality on productivity and fruit shape in different apple cultivars Rev. Bras. Frutic.

This study examines the relationship between floral structure and bud quality with the productivity and fruit shape of Gala, Fuji and Daiane apple cultivars under the mild winter conditions in Southern Brazil. Six different types of floral structures were characterized in field growing plants, according to their nature and bud size: spurs, short and long twigs with weak and vigorous buds. Variables related to the phenology and the productivity for these different structures were evaluated. Gala and Fuji cvs. showed earlier phenological development in the twigs, and cv. ABSTRACT The market requirement regarding fruit type varies from region to region and it is necessary to produce cultivars with different patterns of fruit morphology. Therefore, the aim of this study was to select lines with resistance to tomato leafminer and different fruit shapes in order to meet the different market segments. Seventy-six lines and pre-selected populations were used for pest resistance together with four other susceptible controls (TOM-584, TOM-684, NC-123S, and Santa Clara) and two wild accessions (Solanum pennellii ‘LA 716’ and S. habrochaites var. glabratum ‘PI-127826’) considered resistant. In this study, it was evaluated the influence of different shapes, sizes, and maturation stages on the yield of albedo flour and pectin content of yellow passion fruit rinds. Random samples of 40 fruits were used, and the data were compared using significance intervals at 5%. Weight, skin color, fruit size and shape, pulp yield, mesocarp thickness, amount of epicarp and mesocarp, moisture content, and pectin yield were determined. The maturation stages were defined according to measurements of the yellow color of the skin. The shape and size patterns were defined according to the length/width ratio (equatorial diameter) of fruits.
