The determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in seawater from the Fluxmanche transect (Dover Strait) ArchiMer
Law, Rj; Whinnett, Ja.
Concentrations of a range of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were determined by means of coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS). Water samples were collected, using a contamination-free sampling device, at two depths (Im subsurface and 3 m above the seabed) at each of the six stations established in the Dover Strait. The stations were occupied during June and October 1990, and July 1991. Concentrations of PAH were often close to or below the limits of detection for samples of 10.8 1 volume, although a number of samples exhibited high concentrations (of naphthalenes in particular) which were apparently derived from shipping inputs in the Dover Strait. Future work will require the development of methods with lower limits of detection, and...

Volatile Organic Compounds Produced by Human Skin Cells Biol. Res.
ACEVEDO,CRISTIAN A; SÁNCHEZ,ELIZABETH Y; REYES,JUAN G; YOUNG,MANUEL E.
Skin produces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released to the environment with emission patterns characteristic of climatic conditions. It could be thought that these compounds are intermediaries in cell metabolism, since many intermediaries of metabolic pathways have a volatile potential. In this work, using gas chromatography, we answered the question of whether VOC profiles of primary cultures of human dermal fibroblasts were affected by the type of culture conditions. VOCs were determined for different types of culture, finding significant differences between skin cells grown in classical monolayer culture -2D- compared with 3D matrix immobilized cultures. This indicates that VOC profiles could provide information on the physiological state of skin...

Volatile profile of heated soybean oil treated with quercetin and chlorogenic acid Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Miranda,Adriana Leão de; Ribeiro,Mariana Carvalho; Moreira,Ricardo Felipe Alves; Maria,Carlos Alberto Bastos de.
Changes in the profile of volatile compounds after the heating of refined soybean oil without adding antioxidants, and treated with quercetin and chlorogenic acid (5-CQA) were investigated by GC/FID, GC/MS, and GC/SNIFFING. The heating temperature of the oil sample was 20 °C for the first minute, and then it was increased up to 160 °C at the rate of 10 °C min-1. The final temperature was kept for 10 minutes. 19 volatiles were identified in the heated samples without antioxidants. Medium-chain carbonyls predominated in the volatile fraction, mainly 2-heptenal, 2,4-heptadienal and 2,4-decadienal. Around 11 to 15 volatile compounds were detected in the heated samples treated with 5-CQA and quercetin, respectively. 5-CQA was not very efficient in delaying the...
