Assessing the Impact of Climate Change on China's Grain Sector and International Trade AgEcon
Hansen, James M.; Tuan, Francis C.; Somwaru, Agapi.
This study analyzes the potential impact of climate change on China's corn, wheat, and rice, domestic agricultural markets, and the international markets out to the year 2050. The study provides a brief background and reviews research literature of climate change effects on China's crop yields. The paper presents the potential impact of climate change on China's yields and attempts to quantify the domestic and global market impacts. The analysis has four scenarios, which assumes two future levels of greenhouse gas emissions with the effects of CO2 fertilization and no CO2 fertilization. A 27-country commodity partial equilibrium simulation mathematical programming model (PEATSim) is used for this analysis. Results indicate under CO2 fertilization, which...

CO2 emission from soil after reforestation and application of sewage sludge Bragantia
Carmo,Janaina Braga; Urzedo,Danilo Ignácio de; Ferreira Filho,Pedro José; Pereira,Elisabete Alves; Pitombo,Leonardo Machado.
This study aimed to quantify the carbon dioxide emissions from an Oxisol under degraded pasture located in Sorocaba, São Paulo State, Brazil. The treatments were: sewage sludge (LE), sewage sludge compost (CLE), mineral fertilizer (AM) and no fertilization (T0). The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized block design with analysis of the effect of the four treatments (CLE, LE, and AM T0) with four replications. The application of sewage sludge, sewage sludge compost, mineral fertilizer and no fertilizer was statistically significant for the variables of height increase and stem height of Guanandi seedlings (Calophyllum brasiliense Cambessèdes - Calophyllaceae). Treatments showed significant differences in terms of CO2 emissions from soil. The...

Impact Of Greenhouse Gas Abatement Targets On Agricultural Activity AgEcon
Donnellan, Trevor; Gillespie, Patrick; Hanrahan, Kevin F..
As part of its continuing commitment to address the causes of climate change, the EU has agreed reduction targets for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to be achieved by 2020. In the case of Ireland the target is a reduction of 20 percent relative to the 2005 level. Agriculture is a major source of GHG emissions in Ireland, comprising 26.8 percent of total GHG emissions in 2007. Understanding the scale and cost of the decrease in agricultural production required to achieve this reduction in GHG emissions is particularly important, as is the comparison of the cost of this approach with a range of possible other means of achieving emissions reductions in the sector. This study finds that, even with reduced fertiliser usage and more extensive production...

Nitrous oxide emission in response to N application in irrigated sugarcane AGRIAMBI
Lopes,Alzeneide da S.; Andrade Júnior,Aderson S. de; Bassoi,Luís H.; Silva,Josiane F.; Bastos,Edson A.; Paulo,Vitória de F..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to compare the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) resulting from the application of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) doses in fertigated sugarcane, in comparison to emissions from conventional fertilizer application. The study was conducted in the experimental area of Embrapa Mid-North, Teresina, Piauí state, Brazil, from August 2014 to January 2015. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, analyzed in a (2 x 2) +1 factorial scheme, with four replicates. The treatments consisted of the combination of two doses of N and K2O (60-120 and 120-180 kg ha-1, respectively) and two methods of application (in soil and fertigation), and a control. The use of fertigation reduced the emissions of N2O in sugarcane compared...

SYMPOSIUM STRATEGIC PRACTICES FOR MITIGATING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION IN GRASSLAND.
The accumulation of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere remains an important topic of scientific and public interest. The increase in these gases has been considered to be a major cause of global warming. In this context, agriculture, especially Brazilian livestock production, has been the target of numerous criticisms related to global warming. Appropriate agricultural practices can reduce GHG emissions and improve the sustainability of the cattle industry, being the manipulation of ruminal fermentation and the increase in the sequestration of C strategic technologies for Brazil. In this regard, this project has been implemented through the collaborative work of 4 institutions: 1) The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation - EMBRAPA (EMBRAPA...
