The present work investigated to what extent the utilisation of 14C-glucose by soil microorganisms could be used to compare microbial activity between rhizosphere samples. A very low amount of 14C-glucose was added to the soil to be tested. After incubation for 6 days at a constant temperature in the dark, we determined the mineralised fraction (14CO2) and the 14C of the microbial biomass rendered extractable after fumigation with chloroform vapour (14CFE). In unplanted soils, we observed that the 14CO2/14CFE ratio increased when microbial growth was stimulated by addition of unlabelled glucose (20-500 µg C g-1 soil) compared to the control (no unlabelled glucose added). A lactic acid bacterium with potential application in cassava fermentation IRD

An amylolytic lactic acid bacterium, identified as #Lactobacillus plantarum$, was isolated from cassava roots (#Manihot esculenta$ var. Ngansa) during retting. Cultured on starch, the strain displayed a growth rate of 0.43 per hour, a biomass yield of 0.19 g/g, and a lactate yield of 0.81 g/g. The growth kinetics were similar on starch and glucose. Enough enzyme was synthesized, and starch hydrolysis was not a limiting factor for growth. The synthesized amylolytic enzyme was purified by fractionated precipitation with ammonium sulfate and by anion exchange chromatography. Anaerobiosis and low specific growth rates enhance hemolysin BL production by Bacillus cereus F4430/73 Inra

Bacillus cereus F4430/73 produced the highest levels of hemolysin BL (HBL) when grown under anaerobiosis in MOD medium. Anaerobic cells grown in a chemostat at low specific growth rate (0.1–0.2 h–1) expressed up to sevenfold more HBL than did cells held at a faster growth rate. At 0.2 h–1, the presence of 90 mM glucose resulted in inhibition of HBL production. Glucose was found to repress HBL induction at the mRNA level, indicating the potential involvement of catabolite repression in the regulation of HBL. Based on these data, it is suggested that growth rate could be an effector of catabolite regulation of HBL.

Application of a SUGAR model to analyse sugar accumulation in peach cultivars that differ in glucose–fructose ratio Inra

A SUGAR model, which was established to predict the partitioning of carbon into sucrose, glucose, fructose and sorbitol in fruit mesocarp of peach cultivars (Prunus persica (L.) Batch) with normal glucose: fructose ratio (G:F) of 0·8–1·5, was evaluated and extended for peach cultivars with a high G:F ratio of 1·5–7·8. The extended model (SUGARb) is more generic and assumes a high G:F ratio to be due to preferential transformation of sorbitol into glucose, preferential utilization of fructose or preferential conversion of fructose into glucose. La composition minérale et glucidique a été étudiée au cours du grossissement du fruit de christophine, Sechium edule Sw. L’ovaire est riche en azote et en potassium. D’une façon générale, les teneurs en éléments minéraux, N, P, K, Ca et Mg, baissent progressivement jusqu’à la récolte du fruit (30 jours après l’anthèse) sauf cette du phosphore qui ne varie pratiquement plus dès le 10e jour. L’étude des glucides a porté sur les sucres solubles neutres, l’amidon, les hémicelluloses et la lignocellulose. Les sucres solubles sont constitués essentiellement de fructose, glucose et saccharose. Le fructose et le glucose s’accumulent dans une première phase qui couvre les 15 jours après l’anthèse.
