Anatomy of pneumatophore of Mauritia vinifera mart BABT
Pereira,Luiz Alfredo Rodrigues; Calbo,Maria Elisa Ribeiro; Ferreira,Claiton Juvenir.
Pneumatophores of Mauritia vinifera Mart. were collected from six month-old plants maintained submerged in fresh water to induce pneumatophore formation. Twenty day-old pneumatophores had a quite prominent root cap. The epidermis was composed of hexagonal cells, tangentially distributed along the cylindric surface of the organ. In transverse section these pneumatophores had a simple epidermis over several layers of sclerified parenchyma, which covered an aerenchyma with large intercellular spaces. The endodermal cells had Casparian strips. The vascular cylinder was polyarch, with a pith and surrounded by a unisseriate pericycle. Anatomically the 4 month-old pneumatophores were similar to the younger ones, except for the absence of the epidermis. The...

Changes in phenotypic variability of two tropical woody species due to short and long-term exposure to different irradiances Bragantia
Pereira,Silvia; Frosi,Gabriella; Oliveira,Marciel Teixeira de; Lustosa,Bruno Melo; Arruda,Emília Pereira; Santos,Mauro Guida.
ABSTRACT Studies addressing the physiological and anatomical responses of plants under different light intensities normally are performed in short term. Thus, the present study includes a long term analysis. This study aims to verify whether the phenotypic variability off attributes in two woody tropical specieis, Paquira aquatica and Sterculia foetida, are compatible both under short term exposure to different light availability levels (full-light and half-light local irradiance) and long-term exposure in the same conditions. The study was developed in two phases: phase I (short term) and phase II (long term). The variables measured were referent to CO2 assimilation responses to light intensity, chlorophyll a fluorescence, chlorophyll content,...

Ecophysiological leaf traits of native and exotic palm tree species under semi-arid conditions Bragantia
Oliveira,Deborah; Medeiros,Maria; Pereira,Silvia; Oliveira,Marciel; Frosi,Gabriella; Arruda,Emília; Santos,Mauro.
ABSTRACT The main goal of this study was to evaluate the performance of two palm species under semi-arid conditions during the rainy and dry periods: the semi-arid native Syagrus coronata and a native to tropical America, Acrocomia aculeata. The leaf water potential, gas exchange, leaf soluble sugars, starch, free amino acids, total soluble protein content and morphological traits were measured. The highest leaf water potential and CO2 assimilation values in both species were achieved during the rainy period. In response to the low soil moisture content during the dry period, gas exchange decreased 72 and 92% in S. coronata and A. aculeata, respectively, when compared with values from rainy period. As evergreen plants, both species maintained intact leaf...

Ecophysiology of tropical tree crops: an introduction Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
DaMatta,Fábio M..
In this special issue, ecophysiology of major tropical tree crops, considered here on a broader sense and including species such as banana, cashew, cassava, citrus, cocoa, coconut, coffee, mango, papaya, rubber, and tea, are examined. For most of these crops, photosynthesis is treated as a central process affecting growth and crop performance. The crop physiological responses to environmental factors such as water availability and temperature are highlighted. Several gaps in our database concerning ecophysiology of tropical tree crops are indicated, major advances are examined, and needs of further researches are delineated.

Effects of changes in the photosynthetic photon flux density on net gas exchange of Citrus limon and Nicotiana tabacum Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Pimentel,Carlos; Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Santos,Mauro Guida dos; Oliveira,Ricardo Ferraz de; Machado,Eduardo Caruso.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of changes in the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) on net gas exchange of Citrus limon, a woody species, and Nicotiana tabacum, an herbaceous species. When PPFD was increased from 50 to 350 mumol.m-2.s-1 and returned to 50 mumol.m-2.s-1 after 60 min, the CO2 assimilation rate (A) increased and stabilized after 15 min in both species. Stomatal conductance (g s), however, continued to increase. After returning to low PPFD, A immediately diminished to a low value for both lemon and tobacco. Stomatal conductance of lemon diminished slowly over 60 min, whereas g s for tobacco took only 15 min to decrease. This difference in behavior is probably due to over-sensitivity of stomata of woody species,...

Abstract This paper presents the conceptualization, methodological adjustment and experimental application of the micrometeorological technique eddy covariance - EC, to measure energy, water vapor and CO2 fluxes in two coffee agroecosystems: the first under full sunlight, and the second under shade, both with equatorial Andean hillslope conditions. With a footprint and fetch calculation, the required distance from the edge of the field in the prevailing wind direction to the EC tower is three times higher under shade than full sun. The shaded agroecosystem reached maximum average carbon fixation rates of 21.26 ± 2.469 μmolCO2.m-2s-1 (α = 0.05) (61% higher than under 100% sunlight) which gives a high carbon sink capacity to the association...

RIBEIRO, R.V.; SANTOS, M.G. dos; SOUZA, G.M.; MACHADO, E.C.; OLIVEIRA, R.F. de; ANGELOCCI, L.R.; PIMENTEL, C..
Photosynthetic responses to daily environmental changes were studied in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) genotypes 'Carioca', 'Ouro Negro', and Guarumbé. Light response curves of CO2 assimilation and stomatal conductance (gs) were also evaluated under controlled (optimum) environmental condition. Under this condition, CO2 assimilation of 'Carioca' was not saturated at 2,000 mol m-2 s-1, whereas Guarumbé and 'Ouro Negro' exhibited different levels of light saturation. All genotypes showed dynamic photoinhibition and reversible increase in the minimum chlorophyll fluorescence yield under natural condition, as well as lower photosynthetic capacity when compared with optimum environmental condition. Since differences in gs were not observed between natural and...
