The palm tree juçara (Euterpe edulis Mart) is considered one of the most important and threatened native species in the Atlantic Forest. The search for juçara seeds (Euterpe edulis Martius) has increased, generating a need for technologies favorable to their production, quality and conservation. The aim of this study was to describe the seed germination patterns of 45 juçara accessions by using a nonlinear model to examine the behavior of these patterns and select superior genotypes. After clustering 45 juçara accessions into four groups, four nonlinear models, namely, the logistic, Gompertz, von Bertalanffy and Weibull models, were tested based on their fit for each group of accessions. The Gompertz model presented the best fit to describe the germination... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate genetic parameters and predict genetic values for the selection of cassava (Manihot esculenta) genotypes in the state of Pará, Brazil. The trial was performed with 56 genotypes in two growing seasons (2012/2013 and 2013/2014), in the municipality of Igarapé-Açu, in the state of Pará, using the augmented blocks design with two control treatments. The evaluated traits were: plant shoot weight (PSW), number of roots per plant (NRP), number of rotten roots per plant (NRRP), fresh root yield (FRY), harvest index (HI), and starch content in the roots (SCR). The restricted maximum likelihood (REML) and best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) methods were used. There was genetic variability among genotypes for... |

Maize plants of the variety BRS 4154 - Saracura were evaluated in different cycles of recurrenl selection to determine genetic gains in flooding talerance, arranged in a random block design. The maize variety BRS 4154 in four selection cycles (1, 5. 9 and 15), together with the flooding-sensilive variety BR 107 and siingle cross BRS 1010 as control, were sown and evaluated. The stress caused by waterlogged soi! reduced the weight of 100 seeds and grain yield but did nol affect the number of kernel rows, ear length or prolificacy. Selection for yield resulted in higher yields. |

Peppers is one of the oldest domesticated crops in the Western Hemisphere. Long before the arrival of Columbus in Americas, indigenous already used peppers as food, as war artifacts and in religious rituals. Capsicum genus has perfect flowers where male and female reproductive structures are in the same flower. Domesticated peppers (Capsicum) are diploid and predominantly perform self pollination. In comparison level, the size of C. annuum genome is around three to four times larger than tomato. The hot pepper genome shared highly conserved syntenic blocks with the genome of tomato, its closest relative within the Solanaceae Family. Objective: This article has reviewed the plant breeding of chili peppers (Capsicum, Solanaceae). Results: Genetic diversity... |
